As for the perks of this over HDHR, some find the Tivo recording software is substantially better than anything else out there, especially when it comes to TV Guide data. It's also a fully inclusive device that does not need additional PCs or servers to function.

I'm considering getting one of these to replace my Windows 7 Media Center setup. I currently edit my WTV recordings with Video Redo and save them to unRAID for playback on Raspberry Pi Kodi media players. Will I be able to mimick this workflow with the Roamio?

there are several 3rd party software "solutions" to copy over recordings (those not flagged as no copy) with varying degrees of complexity. I had poor luck with all those until a fellow came up with a very simple Windows desktop app that pulls recordings and converts (have to be decrypted, then converted to compatible format like MP4) them using Handbrake CLI. Excellent performance especially in new gen i5/i7 processors.

ps. I have not ever run into "no copy" with OTA recordings. I believe those would be like HBO and that sort coming from cable.

 

I asked my question on the Video Redo forum as well and one of their developers replied. Basically, as long as I have TiVo Desktop installed on my editing PC, I'll be able to continue using a similar workflow.

 

Now I just need to decide if it's worth the $300...
