Accessing USB Drive, Not Assigned In Array?

Featured Replies

I have a (possibly corrupt) USB Passport, and I'm having trouble accessing the info...through Windows-based machines.

I wanted to see, if I could get at the "raw data"...through my unRAID server.

I stopped the array, shut the server down; plugged the USB drive in. Started the server and array.

How can I, if it sees it...find this drive, and try to extract info from it?

Thanks

Define "raw data".

Define "raw data".

LOL; the info on it.

Not sure if it will work for you, but I use a plugin called "unassigned devices"

It allows you to see any usb drive connected (thumb drive, external hdd, etc), and lets you mount them.  Depending on the type of failure of your external you may or may not be able to use it.

You can also install a preclear web gui to preclear devices and it plays nice with unassigned devices from the main screen.  (please note preclearing the device WILL DESTROY ALL OF YOUR DATA!  this was mentioned because at some point it may be worth preclearing the drive to check it for stability before reusing it)

Sorry but that's just as vague as "raw data".

If Windows could see it as a valid NTFS or other filesystem that it supports you wouldn't even be asking your question. The "raw data" is just a bunch of bits. The thing that makes those bits into files is a valid filesystem. Even if you could get the bits what would you do with them?

OK, let me try to make this clear:

there's no way...through my unRAID server; to try and recover files, on a USB drive...that I can't get to load on Windows?

Your best bet is attempt what bobekdj said and try mounting it with unassigned devices. But depending on what happened to the disk it might not be mountable.

Edit: There is a lot of unknowns here, like what the original file system is (assumed NTFS since it was being used with Windows), if that's the issue, if it's a hardware issue... etc. You've not given us much to go on, which is why it's hard to tell you what you can do.

Unraid is not a file recovery focused distribution. It has a limited amount of windows file system support. There are live CD's that do have recovery tools, but they aren't noob friendly. Generally, file recovery is a paid professional thing, so be prepared to google and educate yourself. This forum is not the proper place for learning about windows file recovery.

OK...close it. Thanks
