March 14, 201610 yr Author I didn't understand much of what itimpi said, but I will try to keep a better eye on things. I've attempted to turn on notifications, but for some reason I cannot set it to send me emails (the checkboxes are grey) despite having setup, tested, and confirmed working my email settings. Not sure what's going on there.
March 14, 201610 yr Community Expert The most important value is pending sectors, like this one: Device Model: WDC WD30EZRX-00DC0B0 Serial Number: WD-WCC1T1059928 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 1 It usually means the disk has bad sectors, this will prevent a successful rebuild in case of a different disk failing, but sometimes, especially when there's only one, it can be a false positive, if the disk passed the extended SMART test withou read errors it should be ok, but if the number increases you should replace it or at a minimum do another extended test, if it fails it has to be replaced.
March 14, 201610 yr Author Ok. How often would you recommend running an extended SMART test? Can that be automated and a notification sent if there are errors?
March 14, 201610 yr Community Expert Turn on system notifications and you'll be warned if any of the most important attributes change, only in that case I do an extended test, if there are no warnings doing a monthly non-correting parity check is a good away of testing that all disks are OK and avoiding surprises with multiple failures at the same time.
