Redistributing Files on Array?

Featured Replies

I have a question on file distribution and shares.

I currently use shares on the "high-water" setting to distribute files throughout the array.  I have 3 disks, 1 parity and 2 on the array.  I'd like to change the file system on disk 1 to XFS.  It's currently using reiserfs and I have some errors that I'm having trouble repairing so I figured no time better than now to switch over to XFS.

Both disks on array are about halfway full.  My plan is:

1. Take the content from disk1 and move what I can directly to disk2.  I don't think it will all fit, but it will be close.  Take the remainder to another storage device on the network.

2. Format disk1 and set the filesystem to XFS.

3. Add any additional files from extra network storage device back to disk 1.

My problem now is that disk 2 is full, and disk 1 has very little on it.

Is there a tool to help redistribute the files throughout the disks, or should I not be concerned about the heavy load on disk2 vs disk1?

It probably does not matter where the files are located.

You can use the unBALANCE plugin to help with moving things around, or simply do manual copying.

If you do manual copies make very sure never to copy from disk shares to user shares (or vice versa), that is unsupported and there is a highrisk of data los..

You should not be concerned about the heavy load on disk2 vs disk1.

Just to re-emphasis Helmonder's comment -- be CERTAIN you do not copy to the user shares.    The "user share copy bug" will result in complete loss of data if you do this.

... having disk #2 full is no problem at all => in fact, writes to the array after that will actually be faster, since disk 1 will be writing to the outer cylinders, and all new writes will be to disk 1.

And I can talk out of experience... Imho its not really a bug though... It is unsupported and not supposed to work..
