I think I toasted my usb stick

Featured Replies

Was upgrading my box hardware today and the usb plastic housing slipped off, causing direct contact with my fingers. I can't seem to get past post. How screwed am I? For I reinstall to a fresh usb will my license work, or will any of my settings/plugins still exsist?!  :'(

The license is tied to a specific USB flash drive, so you will have to get a new license. The GUI will guide you through that process.

With a new install you will have to do all your settings over since they are stored on the flash. The only risk of data loss is if you don't assign your disks correctly. Assigning a data disk to the parity slot will overwrite the data with parity.

unRAID will create user shares with default settings for all the top level folders on your drives. You will need to change those default settings if they are not what you want.

All plugins, dockers, etc will have to be setup again. If you have a docker.img you should recreate it. Most of the time the working data plugins and dockers use is actually stored on your disks so for example if you have a plex library it should be OK once you set the plugin or docker to use that data.

Thank you for the info! My fears are now confirmed, I'm very new to unraid and didn't know until now what my options were. Is it possible to install unraid to a hard disk instead of a usb drive? Also how do I go about getting my license attached to another usb device? Thanks!

I would email one of the staff members at LimeTechnology, or [email protected] (generic account that's likely sent to 2-3 people) about your USB key situation. I'm sure they'll be pretty understanding.

That said you should buy the new USB first, and get your system set up in trial mode so that you can get the identifier number they'll need to issue you a new key.

Also no unraid can't really be installed to a hard disk... well I guess that's not true it could in theory be installed to a non-array hard disk or cache only drive... (I'm not sure of the value of doing this in practice) if it were on a data drive, it would really slow down the array and require a lot of parity writes all of the time.

Thank you for the help, I just went to wallgreens and got a really over priced flash drive but it's new and shouldn't have any problems, I installed a demo version of unraid to it and just sent off the guid to support. Thank you so much for the help! I would have been totally clueless without your help!

Can't be any more overpriced than when I needed one in a big big hurry and the only place open was Home Depot

Isn't there now an online process for switching out the usb guid? I think it's all automated
