Should I make the switch from FreeNas?

Thank you for the replies.

Switch from reiserfs to format no problem.

Switch each drive to auto, no problem.

Restarted array but result is 3 Un-mountable drives again.

Installed preclear plugin but now reading forums for script.

Guess coming from FreeNas is throwing some wrenches in but have to say this is starting to turn in to a lot more work than FreeNas just to even get a basic setup.

Very much appreciate the help, just a old man grumbling a bit dreaming of his Amiga days...

Preclear script is here. Read instruction on where to copy it on the same post.

Note: if you think your drives are good then there's no need to run the full Pre Clear. e.g. plugin will allow you to skip pre read phase etc.

An additional benefit of pre clearing is formatting will only take a few minutes as all the zeroing is already done (and drive is marked in a way that unRAID knows zeroing has been done).

I personally do full pre-clear for all my drives before adding to my array. That includes old drives from my workstation which I have never had any problem with. Can never be too careful, and as I have now found out, it helps erase any potential remnant of any other config.

This reminds me of my old 1TB Hitachi drives which I sold a long time ago. I have always wondered how the motherboard knows they were part of a RAID arrangement even though I have done a low level formating and have completely wiped everything. Apparently not everything.

Started PreClear on the drives.

Hours later it is still sitting on starting...

/boot/config/plugins/preclear.disk/preclear_disk.sh  -c 1 /dev/sda 2>/tmp/preclear.log

root@NASA:/usr/local/emhttp# /boot/config/plugins/preclear.disk/preclear_disk.sh  -c 1 /dev/sda 2>/tmp/preclear.log

Sorry: Device /dev/sda is busy.: 1

root@NASA:/usr/local/emhttp#

Reading deeper in the forums and perhaps Preclear is not 6.2 friendly?

If nothing changes after a few more hours I will probably just yank the drives out and zero them myself on a PC and start over from scratch again.

Man, hate to see what problems await me using vms and docker... :-\

Time to yank drives out and zero them on a PC.

All drives failed. Something tells me it didn't even see the drives and was looking at mt USB devices. (usb card reader)

Getting punch drunk.

Started PreClear on the drives.

Are you sure sda is the drive you want to preclear? Often (but not always) sda is the flash drive.

I tried sda,sdb,sde and sde.

They were the only drives shown in the plugin and I'd hoped they were the 3 4T drives and 1 500G Cache drive.

Pulling the drives out now to zero on another PC and starting from scratch.

Again I thank everyone for their input.

Did a quick Drive and mbr wipe on the drives on a PC but same results after UnRaid formats.

PreClear was not able to see the 3 4Tdrives (sdf, sdg, sdh) and only optioned sda, sdb, sdd, and sde (probably my USB Card reader).

Formatting with btrfs they all seem fine but if I switch to AUTO they quickly say "Un-mountable"

Might just go ahead and start dumping some media to see if I can get PLEX up again tonight.

Do you have those drives in the array? Pre Clear won't touch anything that is in array. You have to take it off array (unassigned).

Yes, slowly getting the hang of things here.

Did have array off but no go.

I did get the Intel NIC working by simply disabling the onboard NIC.

Everything OK here just transferring over approx 6T of Media which will take awhile to say the least.

I offloaded all my media on to an assortment of internal and external USB HDs. I have a HD hub (looks like a toaster) for the bare drives but even transferring 3 drives at a time is still topping out at under 60m/sec combined. Probably combination of the Parity speed penalty and most of my devices dropping down to USB 2.0 instead of 3.0.

On a side note, just finished a i7 6700 build with a Samsung 850 EVO as the WIN10 OS drive and a Samsung 950 pro m.2 512 drive as the "data" drive for my son.  Using Acronis it took 26 seconds to do a drive image backup of the OS drive (approx 13G) to the m.2. Still can't wrap myself around the speed!
