August 10, 20169 yr Community Expert I never said I didn't use SMB. I was saying that I don't use workgroups. I just leave them all set to whatever default Apple has set. The Windows default is WORKGROUP so I assume that Apple is using the same default name. It makes it quick and easy for anyone to get networking setup and working without having to understand much about it. Which is a VERY good thing in my humble opinion! It does make the assumption that you have a securely locked down connection to the Internet which provides all the security for the local network because once an intruder is inside, he has total access. And most new routers will provide that. (As an aside to any casual reader of this thread, that ten year old router is not protecting you at this point in its life!!!)
