Update WD Red disk Firmware in UnRAID?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I just recieved a new WD Red which says "NASware 3.0", I looked it up and it seems to indicate it comes pre updated with the WD Red FW update.

Now, my older WD Red HDD's do not have this "NASware 3.0" indication on the label. How would I go about updating them in my UnRAID rig? :)

Cheers,

Arndroid

Have you found a firmware upgrade available for it?

Because I had a cursory look and couldn't see one.  Perhaps if you do, it would be helpful to provide a link....

Regardless to update it in Unraid would require a command line 64bit method.

I have found the update instructions over here:

http://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=201&

Would it be okay to execute the Linux instructions on a UnRAID configuration?

In theory, yes, as long as they're 64bit Linux.  However that link is to something 3 years old, personally, I wouldn't risk it for something that old unless I was convinced it was solving a problem and there was no alternative.

Ah, yes, sounds like solid enough advice. :)

Thanks for the advice on this!

Searching the WD forum, it looks like NASware is not upgradeable. The thread is a little old though. Might have changed, but I don't see anything more recent that indicates otherwise.

I believe that just corrects a problem with the load/unload counter.

Agree -- the link you provided is to a utility to change the timeout value for automatic head parking.  It is NOT an upgrade to the NASWare version.  There apparently isn't any such update for older drives.

I tend to agree that there's no reason to make the change anyway.

NASware isn't really software, or firmware.  It's nonsensical marketing speak for the various technologies WD use, like vibration sensors, bolted down spindle, etc.

You can't upgrade a NASware 2.0 drive to NASware 3.0.

Agree you can't upgrade from NASware 2.0 to 3.0 => but although it IS largely "marketing speak", it also is implemented in the firmware.  The reason you can't upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 is that NASware 3.0 requires some recalibration of internal components, which is done at the factory when the drives are built.  They've made a couple changes in the anti-vibration interface, which changes the number of drives they "certify" for a NAS from 1-5 (NASware 2.0) to 1-8 (NASware 3.0).  But as most folks here already know, those "certifications" are just marketing hype -- you can easily pop 24 Reds in an UnRAID system and it'll work just fine, whether they are NASware 2.0 or 3.0  :)
