Toshiba X300 5TB

Featured Replies

Hello all

Are Toshiba X300 5TB hard drive any good (for parity and data)?

Price is $125 at Newegg until Sunday...

They are conventional PMR drives spinning at 7200 rpm with 128 MB cache and a SATA interface. They are suitable for use as either data or parity disks.

Anything about reliability (good or bad)?

I only have one of these -- bought it about a year ago on a very good sale (probably Black Friday last year, but don't recall for sure).

... in any event, the one I have has been the primary recording drive for my HTPC ever since it was put in service; and has been completely reliable.  We record a LOT of TV ... often 3 to 5 things at a time ... and it's never had so much as a "hiccup".

I have 3x6TB and 2x5TB.  They are very fast and good value.

Since I put them in an unRAID setup where I can monitor the temps, they do seem a lot hotter than other drives but manageable with good fans.

They're 7200rpm drives, so indeed they'll use more power and run hotter than their 5400rpm and 5900rpm "cousins"

But you'll get quicker access times and higher data transfer speeds as a tradeoff for those hotter temps.  And, as noted, you can keep the temps under control with good fans and well designed airflow.
