Windows 7 can't see UnRaid NAS

Featured Replies

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7, and Windows doesn't see my NAS. This has happened in the past, and then reappeared, and then disappeared again. I have turned off the firewall, verified WORKGROUP is not Workgroup, and it still doesn't see it unless I do one of the following things...

1: Input the IP address into windows like this: \\192.168.1.xxx

2: Input into file explorer as \\192.168.1.xxx\

Once you input it this way you can do what you want, but as soon as I close the window, and re-open it it is gone again. Does anyone know how to fix this?

This problem is only with Windows. I can see my NAS via Samba, and NFS via my Kodi boxes.

Windows 10 does this to me sometimes as well on a fresh install. Don't know why but this has always worked for me. Rather than use the IP in explorer I used the server name. So let's assume it's still "tower". I go to \\tower and from then on it will show up under my network. Not sure why this happens though

It is just a pain when ever you want to move files to the NAS if you have to input the IP address every time you open file explorer. This should not be happening.

I agree. I also mapped my shares as network locations to get around this.

You can simply map a network drive;  or just put a shortcut on your desktop to the NAS (i.e. \\192.168.1.xxx) -- then a simple double-click on the shortcut is all you need.

One thing that can happen is the SMB network hasn't had enough time to settle down.  The Local Master on the SMB network is the 'dns' server for the SMB network.  If your new Win7 computer hasn't figured out which computer is the Local Master yet, it won't be able to resolve network names like 'Tower' to an IP address.  (Polling times for SMB are minutes...),  Be sure you install the Local Master plugin on your unRAID server as it will provide you with information about which computer is handling the Local Master duty.  (You really want your server to be the Local Master!)  You can find the plugin the first post in the thread:

And you may have to reboot that windows 7 machine to get it pointed in the right direction.

I have SMB set to Local Master...is this what you meant?

Yes, if you have gone to 'Settings' >>>  ''SMB'  >>>>  'Workgrouop Settings' and set "Local Master Browser" to 'Yes'.  Now, the Local Master plugin will tell which computer on your network is the actual Local Master...  (If your server does end up the local master, shutdown the one that is and wait for a few minutes to see if you server becomes the Local Master.  There is a way to virtually force your server to become the Local Master but that can wait in case this doesn't work.)

I did it as specified in the quoted post. My Win 7 PC is still not seeing the UnRaid NAS without me inputting \\Tower| or \\IP address.

I am assuming i have the Local Master plugin as it gave me the option to select local master. Should I now reboot my PC?

One other thing...another person just told me I shouldn't be able to access my shares without a user in V6, and i have never assigned a user. If this is so what do i need to do to correct this?

You do NOT have the Local Master plugin automatically!  The option to allow your unRAID to participate the election process is a part of basic package.  You have to install the Local MAster plugin by using the 'Install Plugins' on the 'Plugins' Tab using the link in that post that I pointed you to.  The plugin is an option that will show on the page where you turned on that option which of the computers on the SMB network is the Local Master!

You do NOT need to set up an user to be able to access your shares unless you have setup the shares as anything but 'Public' (which is the default).

Sorry Frank I assumed wrong. I just installed the plugin, and it showed my Openelec/Kodi box as being the server. I unplugged it and rebooted my Windows machine after seeing that UnRaid was now the Master Server. After rebooting the Win 7 PC still doesn't see Unraid though. Any other ideas on how to get Win 7 to acknowledge UnRaid as the Master?

Looks like i spoke too soon. Last night with UnRaid as Master my Network drives were all listed, and today the only thing listed under network is users. Unraid is still listed as Master server too. Why would this happen?

Something must still be up, because i rebooted several times, and then waited about 10 minutes each time and it still wasn't there. I then manually input\\ip address and it appeared, but then closed the window and it would not be there... I know this is normal behavior for manually inputting it, but here is the surprise. I left for an hour and when i came back Windows had logged me off... I clicked to log back in (no security), and opened file explorer and there it was. It was now listed as Tower again.

Any idea why would I be still getting erratic behavior like this still?

Ron

Where are you seeing this?  A screen shot would be useful...

Here is a pic of my file manager with it working.

Network_zpsvknw21mq.png

What is strange is if i close the window and it disappears... I have to input where it says Network in the top window: \\192.168.1.xxx. Then it pops up as it should, but it is only temporarily (as I believe it should be when it is manually input this way) until i close the window. This time that is what happened, but then it populated by itself as Tower about an hour later when i came back to it. It shouldn't take this long to populate it correctly, correct?

Another thing... Should I be changing all of my shares to private for security since the NAS is now my master?

That is not the way it is suppose to work.  It does take a couple of seconds for "Computer" block to populate on my system.  Am I correct in assuming the 'xx' (highlighted above is actually the IP address of Tower?  Perhaps a screen shot of before you do that might be useful.  (I think that when you start any computer running SMB, it queries the network to find the Local Master and gets a list of the computers currently attached to the system and registers itself as a member of the workgroup.  Then, periodically, it will check with the Local Master to find out if any other computers have been added.

Also, just leave the window open and see if it will generate the proper display all by itself.  (I think I mentioned that SMB polling times are in minutes --- from back when 80386 processors were state of the art.)  I have always had the feeling that SMB educates itself the longer that it runs.  (That is why you want your unRAID server to always be the Local Master.

What the security levels on your individual shares should not determined by which computer is the Local Master.  It is the nature of your data, how you feel its becoming available to the people who have access to your network and how much you trust those folks.  The default setup on unRAID provides write/write permission to a guest account which means that any computer on the network (basically) has total access to all of the files on the server.

Extending that, most wifi security is a joke, so someone could sit out in front of your house and have access to your entire server without much effort.

Each layer of authentication and security adds to the time and effort needed to look at or modify your files without your permission. Only you can say how much security you need.

I have the DD-WRT firmware upgrade for my Router and it has a ton of settings, but I don't know what to do with it. :(

Yes the xxx is replacing my IP address numbers I input. Next time i reboot, or maybe tomorrow when i log on after it does whatever it does while i am sleeping..I will see if it reloads properly. I am running a I3 NUC so it should have enough power to load fast I would think.
