Supermicro 4U Fan And PSU swap

Recommended Posts

So i'm currently thinking of upgrading from my norco to this Supermicro case. Supermicro 4u my question is would i have any issues removing the redundant psu and putting in a single rail one i currently have a Seasonic 1050 that i would like to put in the supermicro and possibly remove the loud fans to install some noctuas. Reason for this is i have my server in my office and have grown accustomed to how quiet my norco is with the noctua fans all around as it runs quiet and cool. I have read on older post where people have managed to put a regular PSU and noctua fans in place of the stock ones. Not sure if anyone else has done it and if it would be safe to do so. My current setup is x2 Xeon 2690 V2 ,X9DR3-F-B, 128GB Samsung ecc ram, LSI00244 9201-16i , Seasonic X-1050, and planning on adding a gtx 1080 down the line. I have mainly WD Red drives and so far i have had no issues with cooling or temp. Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

I love my Norco but honestly the build quality is not as good. I recently acquired a nice server rack with caters and had read that noro rails wouldn't fit. I gave it the benefit of the doubt since I read it worked for some. Twice the rail release broke. Norco was nice eough to swap out the first rail thinking it was defective. Sadly the second time it was worst as it got stuck and trying to pull it out it broke one of the handles along with the USB ports. Waiting on Norcos response with this issue. But overall I have read that supermicro don't have this issue. That's my main reason and I have seen supermicro being swapped out with single psu and noctua fans. Just haven't seen enough of them done.

I have a 36 bay supermicro 4u chassis, the build quality is fantastic, the things are tanks. You can run them off a single power supply if your comes with two, I will warn you though they are loud. As for swapping out fans, I don't know how that will be possible, mine has fans that are replaceable with the same make and model, but changing them altogether would be difficult and I don't know if it would be worth it. My server is able to keep my drives around 28-31 degrees celsius which I am happy with.

Yeah I have low temp on my drives. I know they're very loud. The pictures I have seen they completely take out the fan and case on it. They use I belive 3 120 or 140 and they zip tie them right behind the sas plane. And the back ones are easier to replace.

That mod might possible on some super micro chassis but I don't think I could get away with it on mine, mine takes like 8 or 10 fans which are probably 40 or 50mm in size.

Yeah not yours I think it has 2 lvl or how do the 36 drives fit in? I'm looking at 24 I found one manufacturer but its only in the uk. X case 424 pro.

24 fit in the front and 12 in the rear.

same SM chassis here.

@cherritaker I get it. thanks for explaining. As the owner of 2 Norco cases, I finally got a 36 bay SuperMicro and I'm asking myself WHAT TOOK SO LONG? THIS IS AWESOME! and since the hdd trays are not compatible, it sucks haing to move drives from one tray to another type.

Either the PSU mod or fan swap/mod seems possible on even my 36bay chassis. But after looking at how well it works already, I'm having a hard time justifying doing any mods. Yes it's super loud, but mines in the basement. I don't have to hear it work. I'd suggest looking at IMPI fan control or other methods first before butchering such a beautiful chassis. But if you choose to, then go for it and have fun! Take some pics! We like that kind of porn around here =D

I'm building mine with a SuperMicro 3u case from ebay that came with two SuperMicro 1280 watt "Super Quiet" PSUs.  They are whisper quiet, but no idea why the original owner put them in the case with seven other weed wackers.  I only need one, and it looks like they go for $110 on ebay, I would let it go to somebody here for $90.

Thanks for that video, that is close to the case I have. I will be looking into something similar to quiet the other fans.

EDIT: apologies if this is against the rules, didn't think of the buy/sell forum until after i submitted. please move if necessary.

I have almost the identical case.  I put in a PWS-721P-1R 720W power supply and 5 x Noctua NF-A8 PWM Premium 80mm fans.  You have to do a little work to get the connector that comes with the Noctua fans to fit in the slot of the fan cover/case, but unless you are constantly taking them out, it shouldn't matter.  My temps have been fine, and it's night and day difference with the noise.

I just did a swap from a Norco 4020 into the same 846 case from the same seller you have listed. The 1200w psu's aren't that loud like the older ones, but I did swap mine with a 720w platinum PWS-721P-1R supermicro(non SQ) and it's even quieter (only $35 on eBay). I have active supermicro CPU coolers added and set IPMI fan setting on my X9 to optimum. The stock ACE 80 mid plane fans stay around 3k which I don't find too loud in my hallway closet but they aren't as quiet as my 120mm noctuas I had in the norco.

I would try to stay as stock as possible if you can find a way as I really appreciate the SM engineered assemblies. You can get supermicro 80mm fan replacements for mid plane that are even quieter (FAN-0074L) that are used in the workstations (see fan matrix https://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/Thermal/ )

I think it's important to keep the static pressure to move the air through the backplane. My temps stay in the 28-35c range right now. With the 120mm noctuas in my norco I always was at high 30's and into 40's which I didn't like. I'd be interested to know what people are getting with the 120mm mod in the 846 case, but I really don't like the butchered look with the zip tied wall.

If you can afford it though, definitely stay with the SM hot swap psu. The SQ series are almost silent from what I've seen but mine is quiet enough.

I'm running two E5-2660 v1's in my X9 board with 96GB ecc ram currently and it rocks!

I love my new SM chassis so much I just grabbed a 24 bay cse-216 and made it a jbod add on to the 846 via DAS sff-8087/8088 cables. Loving it!

Those Noctuas are actually cooling your drives? I was told they wouldn't do much give the low static pressure but may reconsider trying a few.

I just got my case and @ubergeek the psu aren't too loud i ordered 5 80mm noctua to see what temps and sound is like. Hoping its good if not i might look at the stock quieter fans. I keep hearing good things about super quiet psu from them and would be interested in seeing a video or hearing them before dropping all that money. I need at the very minimum between 900-1000 Watts as i plan to run vms with a gtx 1080 or 1070 to stick in the 900 watt range. @btrcp2000 are you selling both or just one i might be interested in picking them up. Thanks once again for all the input.
