April 27, 201016 yr hi, just wondering about the acoustic managment thing for my samsung drives... the bulk of my disks are 5400rpm drives.. but a couple are 7200rpm drives.. would setting the acoustic to quiet, lower the rpm. or is it other things it's affecting? should i maybe even consider doing it on even the 5400 drives?
April 27, 201016 yr Maybe. It depends on the brand of the drives. Each manufacturer does things a little differently and has different levels of acoustic management. Some of them limit the seek speed and leave the rpms the same. Same may have an impact on both.
April 27, 201016 yr I do not believe the rpm can be changed like that. Once designed, the rpm, is fixed. I think WD used marketing leeway when they titled their drives '5400 to 7200' I do believe the seek speed can be adjusted and that may be where the acoustic management comes in. >> should i maybe even consider doing it on even the 5400 drives? Are you interested in making the drive quieter or lowering power usage? With the acoustic management comes a slight decrease in speed (or so I've read).
April 27, 201016 yr essentially all ti does is make the arm slower, nothing to do with disk speed, so if its whining, itll still whine, but itll make the access click click click a bit quieter, at a significant increase in response time. ncq may offset the problem a bit though.
April 28, 201016 yr Author ok then, thanks for the replies.... if all it's going to do is increase the seek times. i'll just leave them all at default
April 28, 201016 yr your drive may be set on quiet more, especially depending on the target market so changing it to performance would make it faster. a good example are the 320GB and 640GB WD Blue hdds, while both share teh same technology the 320GB is quite a bit slower as its been set up to run quiet instead of fast.
May 5, 201016 yr How the drive is formatted makes no difference. Typically amset.exe is run from a boot floppy (or a usb stick or a CD running DOS). It communicates with the firmware on the drive to adjust the drive characteristics and leaves the data on the drive alone.

Just ignore it. besides, hdparm -M will set acoustic management under linux.
