Windows 10 to unRAID server LAN connection slow?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a weird little problem that I wonder if anyone has any ideas on how to help?

In my household I have a Mac running High Sierra, a PC running Windows 10 and my sons PC running Windows 7, both the Mac and the Win 7 machine connect to the unRAID server via webgui and it 's super quick and fast to navigate, copying a file to either of them from the server over the network gets 100+ Mb/s.

However the Win 10 connection takes ages to connect via webgui and is very slow to navigate, with each tab taking a while to load. If I copy a file from the server to it I get 10Mb/s!

If I copy a file to/from either the Mac or Win 7 machine to the Win 10 machine I get a full 100Mb/s so it seems that the connection is all good and the settings are fine, so the only issue seem to be between the unRAID server and the Win 10 machine.

I only have SMB enabled on the server, and I've looked at the network settings, but there doesn't seem to be anything that stands out for me to change.

All machines are connected via 1gb ethernet connections.

Anyone have any ideas?

Paul.

Do what ever you do to get the slow connection, and post your diagnostics.  Possible that something might be in there, but since other computers connect fine, it implies there's something up with your Win box

I'm a complete idiot, this was driving me mad, so after going through all the settings I could find in Windows 10, and any necessary settings in unRAID I was just about to plug a keyboard in so I could check any bios settings, when I noticed the LAN lights on the server, and one was orange, then it dawned on me that I had fitted a new ethernet cable a week or so earlier on the server because the little clip had snapped off (happened to be around the same time I was finishing my Windows 10 build), and didn't even check if it was a CAT5E/6, swapped it over for a 'correct' one and bingo, we are back as full speed file transfers!

20+ years building and tinkering with computers, and it's the most simple, basic thing that stumps me!  :$

Trust me it happens to the best of us. :$

Excuse the numpty question, but what does one of these "non CAT5E" cables look like please?

I've got a box of cables...... a cable's a cable's a cable etc..... would never have thought of this myself........
