n00b question about copying large amount of files.

Featured Replies

I have been trying to copy my MAME roms from my external USB hard drive to my array using Krusader.

I'm trying to copy a folder with 35,493 files in it however, when I copy it to my array, it says its finished, however, the folder on the array only has 3795 files?  Please see attached screenshot showing this.

I've also attached a screenshot of my array setup, and my Krusader setup.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong, and where those missing files would be?

Thanks,

Stewart

For very large number of files like that, you are better off using command line from the console.

Use cp or rsync commands with verbose option and save the output text in a file to help you review what files have been copied or not.

Also dealing with ntfs partition can be quite unpredictable in my experience but do the above first.

i agree use CLI or just do a screen's worth at a time, which will take some time.

Ah ok thanks, any pointers on how to use the CLI to do it?

Try Midnight Commander (mc), it's little easier than pure command line.

Ok thanks, I'll look it up!  Is it in community applications?  Can't seem to find it?

Ok, so its actually built into unRaid?  I was planning on using Telnet, however, it appears that Telnet doesn't exist on Mac terminal (High Sierra) now?

It's part of unRAID, just telnet/ssh into unRAID and after logging in type mc at the command line.  It's a standard two panel file manger - source on left, target on right, tab to switch, F keys to issue commands.

Ok, I've sussed it out, copying now!!  Used PuTTY via Crossover on my Mac!

Although, it looks like I'm going to have to leave my computer running, unless I can use the nohup command with Midnight Commander?

I usually launch a screen session and run mc in it.  I don't recall if screen ships with the base unRAID distribution, or whether it was necessary to get it via the Nerdpack plugin.

If I had any idea what screen was, I would do it!? :DO.o

It's pretty nice.  Instead of creating a fully detached process with no UI it creates a detached command line session with a shell, in which you can run stuff.  You can then use screen commands to attach and detach from the sessions.  It's the conceptual equivalent of running a command window or two, except that the sessions are running on the server and you're using Putty to attach to them.  That way if your Putty session dies, whatever you were running will keep on going.

Thanks - I'm so glad I read this thread.  Just installed screen via nerdtools and it's perfect for the big music tagging job I'm doing via beets which will take me weeks as I do it a bit at a time.

Thanks for all the replies!  They've been very helpful.

Now I have another question, I've installed Deluge with the /data/ path pointing to /mnt/user/downloads.

However, I would like to use it to keep my Mame roms up to date, however, my mame roms are in /mnt/user/media/Roms/MAME 0.190 ROMs (non-merged) - which I will manually change to MAME 0.191 (0.192, 0.193 etc) when new ones come out, so when I open the torrent, I want to point it to that folder, so it can scan it and download the changed / updated ROMs.

Is there anyway I can do this with my current setup, or would I need to point the /data/path somewhere else?

Cheers,

Stewart

Normally when I use MC I just use the Transfer in the Back Ground command and after the command was issued I kill the screen and check on it later. Of course its so nice to actually see the progress, but often I just compare folder sizes to make sure it all completed.

Can anyone help with this?  Should I maybe start a new topic?

I'd post in the support thread for your deluge docker, probably get more attention there.
