Need to add more SATA ports to GA-MA74GM-S2 rev.2

Ah okay, missed that! I knew there was a reason the board in that box cost so damned much :o

SAT2-MV8 is PCI-X.

SASLP-MV8 is PCI-Express.

PCI-X is not compatible with PCI-Express.

I'm glad you pointed this out as I have just been cutting and pasting product numbers and never noticed I was looking at two different cards.

With is the faster option?  I thought it would be PCI-X as I understand its a "parallel" method and PCI-E is "serial" , but as I read further at Wikipedia, I started to doubt things.

My motherboard has a PCI-E x16 and one PCI-E x1  , so I suspect my only option is the SASLP-MV8 .

You need to take into account the width and frequency of both data protocols. In common situations, PCI-Express is faster than PCI-X.

Each lane of a PCI-Express 1.0 slot offers 250 MB/sec.

Each lane of a PCI-Express 2.0 slot offers 500 MB/sec.

Each lane of a PCI-Express 3.0 slot offers 1000 MB/sec.

The common 4-lane PCI-Express 1.0 slot offers 1 GB/sec.

The common 16-lane PCI-Express 2.0 slot offers 8 GB/sec.

The common server 64bit 133Mhz PCI-X 1.0 slot offers 1.06 GB/sec.

The very ultra rare 64bit 533Mhz PCI-X 2.0 slot offers 4.3 GB/sec.

Just to make 100% sure, before I try to order, I should be getting the SASLP-MV8 for my motherboard ( GA-MA74GM-S2 rev.2 ) .. right?

:) :) :)

right, you have pci-express so you should get the SASLP-MV8 and, if they are not included, 1 or 2 mini SAS-to-4 SATA cables

Thanks.

Now, to find somewhere that sells the SASLP-MV8.

I'm in Canada and its not in stock at any of:

ncix.com ($118.79)

directcanada.com ($113.63)

bestdirect.ca ($113.63)

1c2c.ca ($112.89)

amazon.ca ($117.99)

These places don't even sell it:

newegg.ca

kingstoncomputerplanet

Thanks.

I've finally got and installed the SASLP-MV8 in my GA-MA74GM-S2 rev.2 board.

It a X4 card, so I installed it in my X16 slot.

I got a break-out cable and installed 2 - 1.5TB drives on it.

I re-started my computer ( twice now ) , however I think it is only seeing one of the drives.

I had up to "sdf" before I did the upgrade.

I did remove a IDE drive, that I wasn't using, however I don't think it ever had a "sd?" designation.

I should have had 6 drives prior to the upgrade and then 8 after it.

I figure I should have

sda

sdb

sdc

sdd

sde

sdf

sdg

sdh

Suggestions?

I re-started my computer ( twice now ) , however unraid shows no new drives.

Did I need to update anything in the BIOS or is their some other magic step I have to do ?

Thanks

i cannot quite remember (and i have not currently access to my unraid server) but i am sure i had changed something in the pci-express settings (bear in mind that a have a dual-pci-express motherboard)

i guess the first thing to check is if your pc recognizes the SASLP-MV8.

After booting and seeing the first boot screen (where you see your system's memory and the hard disks connected straight to the pc), do you see a screen showing that it is loading the card's bios settings and scanning its ports? if not the card is not being recognized by you pc...

I edited my post, with a bit more detail.

I just "assumed" I would see the drives in UnMenu, however maybe I need to first prepare the drive?  ( I don't install new drives very often )  :)

I ran the command ls -l /dev/disk/by-id , but it doesn't give me enough "sd" options.

I thought that "sdg" must be one of the two new drives, however I have removed both Sata and Power cables to the new drives and I still get the same listing.   Although I have 6 drives, I also have the USB Stick and its picking it up, making 7 drives.

I should have drives:

sdh

sdi

I can see the card loading, at start-up and seeing "drive 0" and "drive 1".

I am running on UnRaid version 4.5 beta 12

It's plugged into the PCIe X16 slot ( the card is PCIe X4 )

I have a breakout cable into the "Port 0-3" SAS connector

I am using "P1" and "P2" SATA cables from the breakout cable.

Also tried "P3" and "P4"

LED's on the SATA card are illuminated on "RDY2" and "RDY3"

http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/AOC-SASLP-MV8.pdf

I've tried using the other SAS port.  I've tried using different power ports.

Anyone who may have installed this card on this board, do you remember getting stuck like this?

Do I need a driver or some extra software installed?

EDIT - rebooted again.  Syslog attached.  Still no luck.

syslog-2010-07-23.txt

You need to use a newer version of unRAID than 4.5 beta 12. I think it wasn't until 4.5.x that added the drivers built in. Try 4.5.6.

  • Author

Well...that might explain things! :)

4.5.6 is considered a stable/safe release?  Any things I need to beware of?  :)

Going to tackle this again tomorrow.

Thanks

I don't recall which if it was deemed final or open beta. In either case, try 4.5.4 or 4.5.6. I don't think you even need to fully start the array or run emhttp, just look at the Linux drive devices listed.

  • Author

That was it BRiT !  Thanks!

I'm running preclear on both new drives simultaneously.  Not sure how long it will take over the new SATA controller, however at first glance, Read Speeds are about 120MB/s, which seems decent.

Anyone ever got the SASLP-MV8 to work with S3?

This alone is a killer for me as my server sleeps every night while it is not being used. Any other options out there?

I know this might not be ideal for everyone, but ... Why not have it power off at night, and then have a wakeup timer set 15 minutes before you're likely to use it during the day?

4.5.6 is fine.  (although I understand from a post made by Tom@lime-tech that 4.5.7 will be out shortly with a tiny fix)

I guess it's a mix of convenience and power saving. I prefer to have it in standby mode because it wakes up much faster than a cold boot and saves more energy than keeping it running 24/7.

I don't have it set to wakeup at certain times because the times that I use it varies.
