January 8, 20188 yr Author thanks jonathanm...upon further reading I am also beginning to think that IOMMU is not something I absolutely need until I upgrade to more modern hardware...with this mobo/cpu combo it would be unlikely at best that IOMMU would add an appreciable gain in speed...as I initially mentioned, if I can RDP into a Windows desktop to do my file maintenance, then I'd be happy...maybe I'll get around to figuring out the BIOS update this week and/or test the RAM according to your suggestion, thanks. just uploaded a Win 7 ISO and will give it another try with just 2GB of RAM assigned to the VM...here's to hoping.
January 8, 20188 yr Author amazingly (to me) I just got the Win 7 install screen via the macOS resident "Connect to Server..." menu item in the Finder's "Go" menu, but when it gets to "Which type of installation do you want?" and I select "Custom (advanced)" to attempt to do a fresh install, the next screen it goes to is "Where do you want to install Windows?" with a warning that "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation." I thought that that is what the virtio ISO file I pointed at during the setup of the VM was for, or did I miss something here? I better continue this on my other thread, pertaining to the actual install of the VM, rather than this discussion?

You need to click Load Driver and point it to the proper folder on the virtio ISO disk. I suggest searching gridrunner's videos for a tutorial on setting up VM's, it will save you much trial and error getting things tuned.
January 8, 20188 yr Author I am sure you’re right...will use his video(s) for guidance from tomorrow onward...at 80% now.
January 8, 20188 yr Author What’s your preferred method of controlling your Windows VM desktops, jonathanm? Do u use VNC (and if so, do you use one on iOS) or RDP? What works best, in your experience? I have found myself taking only my iPadPro with me when administering my unRAID system on location, so right now I am primarily looking for the best method of connecting from iOS.

What works best, in your experience? Depends. VNC served by unraid allows you to see boot screens and the entire process pretty much like you were sitting in front of the machine, but the performance isn't stellar. RDP served by the guest OS is best for actually USING the remote machine as if it were local on a desktop or laptop. I can't comment too much on small screen usage, since I have licenses for https://www.screenconnect.com/ through my business, and use that for most of my small screen stuff. I do have a VNC viewer on my small screens, since performance isn't that important, small screen stuff is limited by the touch screen interface and zooming to areas of interest. I suppose having an iPadPro would change that a little, but I suspect you wouldn't notice any huge difference using VNC. Most of the complaints about VNC are caused by the AWFUL browser implemented noVNC client that is built into unraid. If you use a real VNC client it works pretty well.
