New build for work - Please recommend components (available to UK)

Hi all,

My own server (based around a P5 VM-DO) has been quietly ticking away and gobbling up movies and music for many moons and I'm very very happy with it  ;D

I took it to work this week so I could demo some new media systems, and my colleges were so impressed, they asked if I could build one to put in our rack at work!

Now, unraid has moved on quite a bit from when I first built my server, and most of the components that were 'stable' are no longer available.

So..., could one of you kind souls (that enjoys specifying ;)) please recommend a list of components that are currently stable, available and shippable to the UK?

Requirements:

It needs to be a rack mount case 4-5 U 20+ drives would be nice.

It needs to be easily upgradable i.e. backplanes, hot-swap etc.

All add-on cards etc. will be purchased now so we don't have to worry later on.

It will need UPS protection (are these supported now?)

I haven't been given a budget, but please try to keep it in the spirit of unraid  ;)

I appreciate that this is all in the forum & wiki... unfortunately I just don't have time to read thro' it all and pick out the meat from the bones.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Case: http://www.xcase.co.uk/X-Case-RM-420-Hotswap-4u-p/case-rm420.htm

Or wait until they ship the 24-drive version (it's basically a Norco, and Norco are doing a 24-drive version in the U.S.)

Or go with SuperMicro. I know someone who's built two (yes, two) 24-drive unRAID servers using the Supermicro SC846TQ-R1200B

http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/4U/846/SC846TQ-R1200.cfm

I don't think he's on this forum, but I know him from another forum.

The SuperMicro kit is almost certainly much better built than the Norco/X-Case stuff, but you pay for that. May be better if that's important for business use.

SATA ports (in addition to the mobo): Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=1086873&source=froogle

Motherboard: Someone else may be able to recommend one. There are a lot that will work.

Be careful with anything Supermicro in the EU.

The rarity of suppliers is a true reflection of the kind of support you can expect. It is not like it is for members over the water even if you RMA'd something the chances are they would not have stock to replace it and you would be looking at slow international shipping times to get a new one.

Top kit but not a great EU product.

Also the Norco wasnt Enterprise or even medium business class. This may have changed but if you dont have good cabinet aircon and you have a lump of usage you could have expected disk overheating. I have zero experience with the new one though so this may be a red herring but i certainly wouldnt recommend it for a business.

Hi, thanks for the heads-up on the X-case product.

Can anyone recommend a motherboard please?

It looks like I will need a minimum of 3 pci-e slots to take 3 AOC-SASLP-MV8

Thanks again.

I've gone with the Asus P5Q Premium.  It has 10 onboard SATA ports and a load of PCI-E slots.  I'm combining that with 2x AOC-SASLP-MV8, all sitting in a X-Case 420/Norco 4020 case. Should gibe me plenty of expandability.

Hi

Regulatory work continues on licensing reactors for new build in the UK, while companies prepare for partnerships and call for targets. The latest report from the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process is on schedule for completion in June 2011. At that time, it is hoped that both Areva's EPR and Westinghouse's AP1000 will gain GDA approval for build and preliminary work could start towards that goal.
