I just downloaded the free version to test it out and i have it running up to where it says TOWER LOGIN

what do I do next and what do I do after that?  I have never used linux before.

oh, it's not on the network yet, just stand alone so I can play with it and look.  I hope there is a GUI

thanks

There is no GUI, you control the functions of the unRAID server from the web GUI, which you can only access when it is hooked up to the network.

Ok so what are the steps to connect to it when it's on the network?

Ok so what are the steps to connect to it when it's on the network?

Open you web browser and go here: http://tower/

Yeah you can do pretty much everything via console, but the gui interface is the way to go because its pretty simple. Http://tower

Just make sure when you first login to your system you go into Settings

Identification -

Workgroup - From there I would personally change your workgroup to whatever you are using on your system. For instance all my machines long time ago when I was a gamer all got put on the workgroup of "game" so I set this one to the same.

Network settings -

Obtain IP Address Automatically: - I personally don't like my servers running DHCP so I told it to use a specific IP address. When you first look at that page it will be DHCP and if you don't know your settings when you goto change it just note your gateway, subnet mask and DNS from there it should be pretty self explanatory.

Disk settings -

Default spin down delay: Its defaulted to 1 hour and you can change it to whatever you want. After you have some drives attached you can click on each drive from the Main area and then decide how long each drive should stay up independently or select which spin up group each drive belongs to. Meaning if you want a couple drives to spin up at the same time you can put them on the same group. Why would you do that? Well if you have all your movies on say Disk1 and Disk2 you can have them both spin up when either is accessed to keep the spinup delay time from switching from one to another. I don't mess with that personally because I'm rather patient.

To keep your sanity make sure you use Joel L preclear_disk script because it makes getting the drives ready so much easier. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0 If you do not then you will have to sit there and wait who knows how long while the system takes the array down and preps a drive. What I did because I was playing around was throw two drives in the system and let the array take it self down. It of course lasted I'm going to guess maybe 15-30 minutes and got things ready. I then played around with one drive as a parity drive and the other as a data drive. When I was ready to get serious I then used the preclear_disk script to prep my real drives. It took I'd guess 25-37hours depending on the drive, but it beat up the drives and I'm sure they are about as error free as they can be.

Some test drives I used prior I knew one of the drives had issues and sure enough it found them pretty quick so I'm rather confident in Joel L's script.

its not working.  I get failed to open page.  I am trying to connect to it using a mac.  Do I need to do anything when I first boot up unraid? login or anything?

Ok In console. You know the screen of the server login.

Login: root

Pass:

Type ifconfig

You should get a bunch of info. One of them should be your ip address. Once you get your ip address try http://youripaddress

  • Author

It says Tower login and I type in root

Than I get root@Tower It never ask for a password

Yep this is no password at first until you set it either via the webgui or via command line.

  • Author

I get nothing when I type ifconfig

  • Author

Ok notice above the login screen it says

Boot/config/network.cfg:  no such file or directory.

And

Var/tmp/network.cfg:  no such file or directory

I know they are there because I can see them on the flash drive.

EDIT>>>>  I remade the flash drive and now it is working, thanks guys

Now can I install both the pre clear script and unmenu?  anything I need to know before I do this?

That makes complete since. When I rebuilt a flash drive a while back the /boot folder was missing too, which meant well it had an issue. ;)

Unmenu is really easy just follow the howto that Joe L shows for google code.

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5568.0

Just make sure whatever you install and you want to always run on reboot that you click the button after install to "Install after reboot" If you don't you can play around with things and if you are not sure you want it later just don't click it. Its kinda cool actually.

As for the preclear script

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0

I personally created a folder called scripts in my /boot folder so basically /boot/scripts, but I'm sure where and how will differ from everybody, but that is just how I did it.

In English when you look at your drives in the http://tower/devices.htm

Look at each drive. More than likely if they are sata they will have a prefix of sdX for example this is my setup.

sda - parity

sdb - 1.5tb

sdc - 1.5tb

sdd - 500gb

sde- 500gb

so with my drive "not" added to the array I would of typed something like this.

preclear_disk.sh /dev/hda

The great thing about Linux is you can run it from about anywhere. So lets say you are sitting at the root of your USB stick which should be /boot You could type /boot/scripts/preclear_disk.sh /dev/hda or whatever drive you are trying to clear.

I personally like to clear each one of my drives at console directly on the machine opposed to using telnet because that way I can walk away from the machine while it does its thing and I don't have to worry about having another machine involved. If you want to run the script on two drives just use the ALT+F2 key which will give you another terminal window. Then of course you can use ALT+F1 to get back to the first window.

Just to let you know you can type "exit" to close a terminal down when your no longer using it. Its kinda important to know because after you assign a password in either the Gui interface or by typing "passwd" in console it keeps others from using your machine because the password has been changed opposed to letting anybody use your machine if that's a concern.

Actually, it is not

preclear_disk.sh /device/sdX

but

preclear_disk.sh /dev/sdX

( /dev vs. /device )

oooops, thanks Joe L for correcting that.

Can I install these through the network?  I would connect to the server with my Mac.  I just copy the files to the correct location on the flash drive right?

Yeah. In the management gui just make sure that under your shares that in the disk shares your USB is set to export read/write.

You should be able to copy/acess the flash typically via network neighboorhood or what ever the mac version is. In windows I often type \\tower and the run prompt which of course gives me network access to anything on my network. Either way you access your flash drive when you access it the root of your flash drive just happens to be the /boot directory. I only mention that because it took me a while to wrap my head around that.

Thanks kisser, it all worked

Hey no problem. It really makes it hard when your talking to a Mac guy. LOL

I have Mac n Cheese in my kitchen, but for the life of me I wouldn't know how to anything in a mac.

File structure question.

If I want all my music on one drive, my photos on another drive and my movies on the rest is there anything special I need to do?

If your writing to the User Share then make sure the share has the correct disks in the include/exclude box.  The safest way is to transfer all content to the server via the disk shares and not use the user share.

I restrict my music collection to one disk so not as many disks need spin up when i open iTunes.

I will be using iTunes also and only want thatone disk to spin.  Also, I want everyone to access the files but only myself to have access to delete how would I do that?

Put all your music on whatever disk you like.

Now, if you are using the free version of unraid then this might not work, has been a while since i mess with the free version.  What you need to do is set it up so only your login is able to write to the share, but everyone else can get to it as read-only.  This can be done but i am not sure on the steps, you will want to do some searching on the forums and on google.

  • Author

I will be using the pro version in a few weeks, just using the free version now to test.  When you say only my login do you mean on my computer or the login for unraid?  Do I need to create a user share for unraid?  I will see what I can find on the forums
