February 3, 20188 yr I understand from this table that 512e drives emulate the logical sector size of 512 bytes, though internally the drive stores in 4K sector sizes. What I would like to know is can a 512e drive be made to work just like a 4Kn drive, by switching off the 512 sector emulation layer ?, so that OSes speak in 4K to the drive instead of 512 ? February 3, 20188 yr No, also and as long as the partition is 4k aligned and the filesystem uses a 4k block size like in unRAID performance will be virtually the same for typical users.

OK, Thanks! I thought, perhaps there could be something like a jumper setting in the hard-drive OR some options in the vendor provided HDD management software, to toggle it. Now I am thinking ..well may be not as of date, as vendors like TOSHIBA provide two variants of enterprise HDDs ..with 512e or with exclusive 4kn..
