May 8, 20188 yr So, before removing some disks, I am copying their data to a larger installed disk. As you can see in the following image, I am trying to move all files form disk 9 to disk13. Both contain a '-MOVIES' directory at their root. I want the '-MOVIES' directory from disk9 to move to disk 13 (I dont mind any overwrites). But, as you can see, somehow the '-MOVIES' directory is moved inside the disk13 '-MOVIES' directory . What am I doing wrong?
May 8, 20188 yr Not sure how you managed to do that, but here is how I would have moved it. 1. Go to /mnt/disk13 on the right side. 2. Go back to left side and go to /mnt/disk9. 3. Move the marker to the -MOVIES folder. 4. Hit F6 and make sure preserve attributes and dive into subdirs are marked. Edited May 8, 20188 yr by saarg
May 8, 20188 yr Community Expert Like he said. I always just get the source showing in the left pane and the destination showing in the right pane and hit the function key. I don't type the destination as it looks like you must have tried since the destination isn't showing on the right in your screenshot. The only time I type the destination is when I'm doing a simple rename, and even then I make sure I have both panes showing source and destination folders.
May 8, 20188 yr Author Thanks to both of you. I still have the same problem. Maybe i should reinstall mc?

I actually rebooted and it did not help. BTW, I run mc through screen but I cant imagine how this could be a problem...
May 8, 20188 yr Post a screenshot when you press F6 to initiate the move operation but BEFORE you press enter to execute the move operation. Your first picture already shows that. What is the output of ls -l /mnt/disk13 Edited May 8, 20188 yr by bonienl
May 8, 20188 yr I tried the same here, and it works as expected, it moves the directory to the other disk. Could you also do the below ls -l /mnt/disk9/-MOVIES/

May 8, 20188 yr Community Expert Are you sure you don't have a -Movies folder in the -Movies folder on the source?
May 8, 20188 yr What happens if you uncheck the option "Dive into subdir if exists" (default setting is unchecked)

And it still copies subdirectories from the source. I dont understand why, though, as this option supposedly dives into the SOURCE directoey...

So, guys, sorry for wasting all your time, but I had checked it at that link: http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/linux/manual2/commander.html I should remember to never trust the internet... Edit: It is also explained correctly here (somehow i missed it):
