UPS Test

Featured Replies

This is the 1st time to notice this, but it seems unRAID just initiated UPS test, it lasted for few seconds. But when I checked the web gui, it is showing the battery is @90% and it is charging now. I am curious why it dropped from 100% to 90% in a less than 10 seconds?

This occurred while transferring files to my array, the load is ~138 watts, and the nominal power ~860 watts. Usually @ idle, the power is @ ~90 watts, and the runtime left is ~60 minutes...

Thnx

unRAID wont init the test, this should be UPS builtin peroidic test. The showing of battery drop so fast also normal.

How old is the battery?  These batteries have a very definite life and it is usually less than five years.  The estimate 'runtime left' is simply a SWAG  (stupid wild a** guess) most of the time.

There are a couple of ways to test the battery.  The safest way, to power down the server.  Now plug in a lamp load of about 200W (use incandescent lamp bulbs).  Now pull the power cord and see how long the UPS lasts.   The other way is not really recommended.  Stop the array.  Pull the plug to the UPS and see how long the server stays up.  You really don't have to wait for the UPS to terminate its output.  IF it last twice as long as it normally takes to shut the server down (plus the time on battery, you have set), the battery should do the job.

BTW, I have my UPS set to initiate shutdown when the power has been out for 30 seconds.  In my part of the world when it is out that long, it will not be restored for at least a couple of hours.  Remember, the less time, you spent on battery, the longer the battery will last.  Plus, it you are not using a sine wave output UPS, there is also less stress on the server's PS with  that 'sinewave approximation'!

@Benson When I saw these lines

unRaid apcupsd[2237]: apcupsd exiting, signal 15
unRaid apcupsd[2237]: apcupsd shutdown succeeded
unRaid apcupsd[4228]: apcupsd 3.14.14 (31 May 2016) slackware startup succeeded
unRaid apcupsd[4228]: NIS server startup succeeded
unRaid apcupsd[4228]: UPS Self Test switch to battery.
unRaid apcupsd[4228]: UPS Self Test completed: Battery OK

I thought unRAID initiated the test...

@Frank1940 I'll get back to you with all the info... Thnx
