You need to look at the label on the drive to see if they mention anything about Advanced Format or 4K Sectors or if they have pins 8-7 labeled as such.

Not a big deal at all, and it seems the odds of getting one with the advanced format is low.

dang..  the prices on the 2TB get lower and lower.  This is the first I have seen $80...

What are we going to see on black friday / cyber monday?  I was thinking of waiting till BF/CM, but I'm not sure they will be lower than this...

and what's the difference between EARS and EADS, just the cache size?

The short answer is that either is a good choice for unRAID.

In the forum I mention below some claim the 2TB drive has been this price and lower prices before.  I think some of those sales sold out very quickly.  I did not buy any then because I already had several drives unopened for a long time because I never got around to changing from my free unRAID license using 3 1TB WD Green drives to a new PC with paid license.  I should have either build the new unRAID system sooner or I should not have bought those extra drives because I bought a 1 TB drive and 1.5TB drive long ago for about the price of this 2TB drive.

Yes, hard drive always go done in price.  The lowest price I paid for new 200 GB PATA drives was $20 at Staples years ago on BF.  The lowest price I paid for a new SATA drive was about $45 or so for a WD black 650 GB drive on or after BF last year.  I don't know how low we will see the WD 2TB Greeen drive go.  The best deal is buy whatever drive you need in the short term and do not buy more drive than you need for the next 3 to 6 months because prices will drop.  Some may want a spare drive available to swap in immediately after one fails in their unRAID system.

The differences have been discussed numerous times in this and other forums but the differences change over time.  Both used 4 platters (500 GB each) but the newer EARS now use 3.  The EARS used advanced format while the EADS does not but now someone is a claiming that some EADS use advanced format.  EADS did allow TLER to be disabled but some now claim newer EADS drive have firmware that prevents it--some claim one can change the firmware.  For the current verison of unRAID, both EARS or EADS word fine.  EADS without advanced formatting is the best choice for external enclosures and Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and other older OSes.  Linux and RAID controllers do not work properly with TLER enabled.  Checkout http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/41051/2tb-western-digital-caviar-green-wd20eads-32mb-cache-sata-35-internal-hard-drive?#comments for a longer discussion of this sale and the details of the drives.
