Proper File Management

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am wondering what are some 'proper' practices when it comes to storing your files.

Recently I upgrade to the latest version of Unraid (from 5) and have been diving in learning about different plugins and different ways I can manage my files.

I currently have 1 parity drive and 3 storage drives with different shares. Movies, Tv Shows etc...

To start, I want to create a 'Kids Movies' share and move all of the kids movies to that share. While I was testing out Krusader, I noticed that my files are scattered over multiple disks. For example, I could have a movie in a folder that has has a few files, and when I looked at the disk(not share) in Krusader, I noticed that one of the files could be on one drive and another file is on another disk but both are still in the same folder in the share. Does this matter? Should I be wanting to correct this somehow?

Also, my drives are using reiserfs file system. Is this still ok?

Thanks for the help!

Are they part of the same movie? (Part 1 and Part 2).  If so then yes, as when your player switches from part 1 to part 2 there may be a pause when the drive containing the second file spins up.

If they aren't the same movie, then my answer is No.  Some people like to keep certain things contained on certain drives to satisfy their OCD.  Myself I prefer all files to be scattered over all drives.  My theory is that if worst comes to worst and I suffer more than 2 simultaneous drive failures, I'd rather lose some of the collection than all of it (if by chance the collection happened to be stored on one of the drives in question)

Great! Thanks for the help! As long as the share has everything I don't need everything to be on the same disk.

Yes and no. I would make a plan to migrate off of reiserfs whenever convenient. Definitely any new disks shouldn't be reiserfs. There is a whole thread discussing moving your data around to change file systems. Long story short you need enough free space available to be able to completely empty your largest drive.

I just bought a 4 TB drive to replace my 3TB parity drive then move the 3TB to a storage drive. This may be an opportunity to do that.

What should I be formatting the new drive to? I assume it doesn't matter if I go with XFS for this drive now?

Once it is preclear, should I be leaving it as an unassigned drive and moving data over to it from each drive as I change file systems?

Thanks for the help!

Once it is preclear,

Why are you bothering with preclear?   The only reason to use it would be if you are not sure of the state of the drive.   The Unraid built-in Clear function that is triggered when you add the disk as a new drive to the parity protected array is faster.

I was alway under the assumption that you should preclear a new drive before adding it to the array.

It has only been running for an hour or so. Should I stop it?

I would but that is up to you.   Preclear is NEVER necessary for Unraid which is why it is not built in.    The only reason to use it is to stress test a drive if you are not sure of its state before adding it to the array.    Adding a pre-cleared disk means that the built-in clear function is not needed but the pre-clear takes longer than the clear.
