Disk missing after reboot

Featured Replies

Hello.  I am fairly new to Unraid but have been running it for a couple months flawlessly.  Today, I rebooted my box and my GUI is now showing disk2 as missing.  I am not sure how to get around this error without possibly losing data.

Is it possible to fix the disk or do I need to purchase a new one?

I am using 4.5.4.  I have attached my syslog that I downloaded from unMenu.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks

First I would check that the cables are connected. Some get loose themselves sometimes.

Thanks.  I checked to make sure it was not loose and I also replaced the cable.  No luck.

This time I put a monitor on so I could see what happens when it starts up.  Attached is the image of the monitor.

Does this mean that the drive is bad or the port on the board is bad?  Forgive me if I am asking dumb questions but I am new to all this stuff.

Thanks.

Hmmm... why is your disk 4 not installed in the first screenshot?

Does it now seem ok?

You don't have to have the drives assigned in order.  I have removed a drive from "slot 4" and not filled the space, and it shows that.

I did not install one to Bay 4.  I use Bay 1-3 for movies and Bay 5 for Misc.  I left Bay 4 open for future expansion of movies so I could add another drive and all my movies disks be in order.

Attached is a screenshot of my GUI.

If you stop the array and go to devices and bring up the drop down on disk 2 can you see the missing drive?  If so than reassign it and start the array.  I've got the same problem with my disk 7 and just haven't had time to see what the problem might be.  But I just reassign it and start my array and everything is fine until the next reboot.

When I do that, it does not give me the ability to reasign the drive.  It shows options of "No Device" or Unassigned.  It is currently on the "No Device" option.

Ok, I will try this.  Should I run the short or long test?

This is probably a bad disk - as the BIOS is declaring it "Capable and status BAD"

and then you have this status message :AHCI port 2  Device Error

You may try to move it to another port to eliminate the "bad port" possibility and carefully inspect the cables too (both data and power - as sometimes one of the power pins on the Molex connectors can be pushed backward and ends up not making a good connection)

Short will be fine.

I tried and it stated no such file or directory.

I marked the disk as unassigned and then tried to go back and reassign it but now the disk is not an option at all.  It used to say "No Device" and Not Assigned, now it only gives the option of Not Assigned.

Trying this now.

Update:  Switched ports and confirmed that is has to be the disk.  The screenshot above of my Montior looks the same except the Bad port switched to Port 5 and Port 2 was OK.  I alternated Port 2 and Port 5 so it has to be the disk.  I tried to runt he Smart test but it appears my box is not recognizing the disk at all now.  I twas /dev/sdc.  Can it be identified any other way?

Look in the system log for the disk.  Or, look in the BIOS to see if it is listed there.

If it is not, and the power/SATA connectors are attached well,  you might just have gotten a bad drive.

I guess I have a bad drive.  The syslog shows the drive as sdc but I can no longer access it that way.  I guess I will have to try and get a new drive to rebuild so i do not lose the data.

Thanks

Ok, I have decided to remove Disk 2 from my array altogether.  Disk 3 has always been part of the array but is empty.  How do I replace Disk 2 with Disk 3?

I have already changed Disk 2 and Disk 3 to unassigned and then assigned the old Disk 3 to be the new Disk 2 and removed Disk 2 from the array.  Now Disk 2 shows a blue ball next to it with the correct Drive Name and Disk 3 is now showing as missing.

How do I get rid of the red ball showing Disk 3 as missing since I have moved it to be Disk 2?

Thanks

Through the wiki, I found that I should login to telnet and do initconfig.  Is this correct?

The only way to remove a drive and not replace it is to initialize a new disk configuration and calculate parity on the remaining drives.  When you initialize the disk configuration it will immediately FORGET all the data being simulated on the failed drive.

If there is anything on disk 2 you wanted to save, you've almost shot yourself in the foot.   Assign the disks BACK the way they were, then start the array and copy the data from the "simulated" failed drive to the working drive, then once your files are off the "failed simulated drive" you can un-assign it, re-configure the array, and set a new initial disk configuration.

Setting a new disk configuration immediately invalidates parity.  When you subsequently start the array a completely new parity calculation will be made on the assigned and working drives.  You'll not be protected from another disk failure until it is complete.

Through the wiki, I found that I should login to telnet and do initconfig.  Is this correct?

If you do an initconfig right now, all the data on the failed drive will be gone.  (Of course, if disk2 was empty and you had nothing on it you wish to save, you can ignore my warning)

Ok, great.  I forgot to mention that I did already copy all the data from the failed Disk 2 to the empty Disk 3 before I did any unassigning and re-arranging.

I just did initconfig and parity appears to be building now. *crossing fingers* all works out well.  Thanks for the info.

All is well.  No data lost and removed the bad drive.  Now off to submit an RMA and get a replacement.

Thanks everyone for your help.
