December 15, 201015 yr so currently my movies are all stored on the first 3 of my drives . is there a way i can make it so instead there is a even amount of movies on all of my disks? would it just be easiest to manually go into each disk share and move them over. reason being if i loose one of the full disks i will loose 1/3rd of my movie collection. by having it spread over 10 disks if one failed i would only loose 1/10th of my collection. most of the other discs are nearly empty
December 16, 201015 yr If all the disks are the same size, make your allocation for the share MOST FREE. That should do the trick. If not all the same size, the larger disks will be used until the "free space" on the larger disks are around the same size as the smaller disks, then they will start being used also.
December 16, 201015 yr I think your question is now that the files are on the disks in an uneven manner, is there an easy way of evening it out without manually copying and moving files? No. Changing the allocation method will not rearrange data already written to your array. It will however affect any data you ADD to the array from this point forward.
December 16, 201015 yr Yes it will only apply to new stuff, but the existing stuff will be taken into account so as you add more files usage will start to balance out.
