Suse User
Trying hard to find a compatible mobo, I was going to use my Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe which has the necessary Marvel GB Lan, 2 PATA but it's unclear whether USB2 Boot is possible. Having a spare 3.2ghz Prescott 478 CPU lying around I've spent most of the day searching for a Mobo that should hopefully be Unraid Compatible.. The only contender I cam up with was. limetech
I'm going to have access to a P4P800 Deluxe later this evening, and I'll post here the result. I believe they use the same bios. In the past I was able to boot from a A7N8E-Deluxe, but at USB 1.1 speed (sloooow). Link to comment

I look forward to hearing your results... In the past I was able to boot from a A7N8E-Deluxe, but at USB 1.1 speed (sloooow). Does this only have an impact when having to re-boot? In everyday operation is there any difference at all? Would an Intel P4 3.2 Prescott offer any performance advantage over an AThlon 3200+ for unraid purposes? Thanks, Mark. Link to comment
limetech
I was able to verify that an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe seems to work ok... We plugged a Flash into a USB port, fiddled with some bios settings, and got it to boot (and fast). Had to do this: Under Main -> IDE Configuration - set to "Compatible"/"PATA-only" Under Advanced -> USB configuration - set to "Hi-Speed" (vs. "Full speed") Under Boot - set up to boot from the Flash Link to comment

If I go Socket 478 P4 I'll buy the same "Deluxe" Version you have tested to be double sure . I just need to know.... Does this only have an impact when having to re-boot? In everyday operation is there any difference at all? Would an Intel P4 3.2 Prescott offer any performance advantage over an AThlon 3200+ for unraid purposes? Seeing as my current Suse Server already has the AThlon in it I may keep to the A7N8X-E Deluxe if there is only a slower initial boot-up and no performance advantage switching to the P4 3.2ghz Mark. I. M. Fletcher
I posted this on the AVS forum but I thought I would post it over here too. I’ve spent the last couple of days reading about this product. I’m about halfway through this 60+ page thread. I’m enjoying reading it, but I’m anxious to see if my setup can run this OS. I’ve been running a RAID server using a 3ware 7506 card and 4X 250 GB drives (3 hitachi, 1 WD). I’ve run out of space. I’d like to implement your product and would like to know about compatibility. I have so many random hard drives that I could use in a system like this. Below is a list of hardware that I already have. I suppose I could get by without buying the controller cards at first, but I think I will buy them anyway. They’re so cheap. I also think I’ll buy a new large HD for the parity drive. Do you see any problems with my proposed setup? There isn't a generic video driver in UnRaid? That old Diamond card ran fine on the generic Windows XP VGA drivers. __________________ Link to comment

ASUS P4P800SE Socket 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813131484 I believe this should work fine, but I haven't tested this exact M/B in our lab. Intel Pentium 4 2.4B Northwood 533MHz FSB Socket 478 Ok. KINGWIN KF-21-IPF-B BLACK Mobile 5.25" HDD Rack http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817121109 Ok. (see comments about case below) CHENMING 901AD-SILVER-0 Silver 1.0mm SECC Server Computer Case http://www.newegg.com/product/produ...N82E16811125469 A problem with this case is that it can only accomodate 6 5.25" mobile racks. You'll have to bolt your other 6 drives in the drive cages. This is why we use the Cooler Master. If you decide to hunt for a different case, one thing to watch out for is that there is sufficient clearance between the 5.25" mobile racks and the motherboard. For example the LianLi PC-6077 is a great 12-bay case, but some mobile racks are too long for it (they can't be installed all the way without bumping into the motherboard). The Cremax mobile racks DO fit in this case. 1 GB (2 X 512) Corsair Value RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820141402 OK. The exact link above is stale so I can't tell what speed this is. 2 sticks of PC2100 is sufficient for a 533MHz FSB. Video Card: very ancient Diamond 64 MB Should be OK. Antec TRUE CONTROL 550 ATX 550W Power Supply - Retail Probably OK. PROMISE ULTRA133 TX2 PCI IDE 66M PCI Controller Card - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16816102007 (haven’t purchased yet) OK. Is having non integrated video is a problem? There isn't a generic video driver in UnRaid? That old Diamond card ran fine on the generic Windows XP VGA drivers. Yes, UnRaid uses generic VGA driver for all video (integrated or non-integrated). __________________ Link to comment
