Simple Array Question

Featured Replies

Hi All,

If i currently have

4TB Parity

+ 4TB Array

+4TB Array

8TB Total

If i have an additional 4TB Drive, what are negatives of adding to the array vs the duel Parity.

If i add it to Parity i only have 8TB Usable space right? If i add it to the array i have 12TB. but if more than one disk fails i lose the whole array correct?

Aslong as i have a backup, what would you guys do?

No. You lose whatever is on the failed disks.

Ah true, If i have 1 parity drive and only 1 array drive fails it will rebuild.

What would you do, extra parity or extra Data drive.

@jonathanm is correct.  With a single parity drive, then if more than one disk fails you lose the data on those disks, so with one parity and three data disks if two disks fail then you would lose one or two data disks depending on whether the parity disk was one of those that failed or not.

So long as you have a reliable backup, then I would go with extending the array in this case.

It is generally advised to only add drives as needed since each drive is a potential point of failure.

How much data do you think you will need on the short term ?
