January 30, 201115 yr Hi All, I am in the process of migrating from WHS to unraid, I bought a pro licence yesterday. Everything was going fine (albeit a few hiccups) today i powered down my unraid server to install a new disk. Now when it boots it wont get an IP address and therefore i cannot log in through the web interface. Things i have tried so far (in the last 8 hours !!!!) assign a static IP Check the usb is called UNRAID check that the link is up (it is) Change settings in BIOS about onboard lan etc take out the drive that i was going to add check and use different network cables check and use different ports on router it seems as though nothing i do will make it obtain an ip address. This happened a day ago also but after a reboot is was ok. It seems to have just happened out of the blue, im using a gigabyte ep43-ud3l attached is my syslog, any help would appreciated Regards, Brett syslog.txt
January 30, 201115 yr Looks like it's finding your NIC. I assume you're logging in directly to the server... ... what does typing ifconfig -a return? Also, what are the contents of /boot/config/network.cfg
January 30, 201115 yr Author Hi Simon, Yes, logging in directly using root When i type ifconfig -a i get eth0 Link encap:ethernet hwaddr 00:24:1d:25:65:5f UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:4 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 rxbytes:0 (0.0 b) tx bytes:(0 (0.0 B) Interrupt:29 base address 0xe000 network.cfg # Generated network settings USE_DHCP=yes IPADDR= NETMASK= GATEWAY= cheers
January 30, 201115 yr From your syslog, it shows that the interface is brought up and there is no response to the DHCP broadcast request. What is acting as a DHCP server for your network? Most have a modem or router that acts as the DHCP server, but this is not always the case. Jan 30 14:55:42 SERVO dhcpcd[1413]: broadcasting DHCP_DISCOVER Jan 30 14:56:12 SERVO dhcpcd[1413]: timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response Also you can take a look here and configure a static IP address just for troubleshooting, or set it up and leave it
January 30, 201115 yr It is not finding a DHCP server on your network. Normally your router would be providing DHCP services. You might log into it and enable its DHCP server. Edit: Spectrum beat me!
January 30, 201115 yr Author Hi, Thanks for the replys, I have now set a static ip address as described. My network is setup as follows. Dlink 604t modem/router wifi dlink dap1522 in bridge mode I have unraid connected to the bridge, which should get an IP from the 604t, i also have a htpc which is plugged into it and it gets an ip straight away. my default gateway is 10.1.1.1, i set unraid to use 10.1.1.7, subnet 255.0.0.0, these setting are also in the bridge. Do i need to set the static ip in my router too?
January 30, 201115 yr Author I feel like I have tried everything!! I have noticed, sometime my lan port leds will be orange and yellow, and sometimes green and yellow. neither seem to make a difference in connecting. my dhcp server on my router is working, just not for unraid. ive been using this motherboard and configuration for a few years. its really got me stumped.
January 30, 201115 yr Author ok, an update, i used the same usb key, the same network cable and the same router and booted unraid from my toshiba laptop, it loaded straight away and got an ip. So it must be an issue with the onboard lan on the gigabyte board. Do you think getting a new network card would be my next option?
January 30, 201115 yr Probably a cheap network card would do the trick but you would lose a pci slot so if they are valuable maybe a new motherboard. You could also try running another os like ubuntu to see if you can check the onboard lan a bit more. A lot of hard work but free. Josh
January 31, 201115 yr Hi, Thanks for the replys, I have now set a static ip address as described. So you have the unRAID box connected to the bridge which is making a wireless connection to the router, correct? You should not have both unRAID and the bridge set to use the same IP address. Each device connected to the network needs to have its own unique IP address. So if you have unRAID set to use 10.1.1.7 make sure that the bridge is using something different. One thing that might help simplify things for testing is to take that bridge out of the loop. Disconnect it from the network and connect your unRAID box directly to the router. This could help determine where the problem is and what you should be troubleshooting. If it turns out to be a problem with the nic on the motherboard, then using a PCI nic is fine. Just make sure you get one that unRAID has drivers for. Intel nics will work for sure.
January 31, 201115 yr Author Hi Spectrum, yes you are right, however i had assigned them seperate IP adresses. I also tried plugging unraid directly into the dlink router with no success. I bought an intel gigabit pci card tonight, disabled the onboard lan, and it has fired right up!!!!! Is it common (unsurprising) for onboard lan to fail?
January 31, 201115 yr Author i appreciate the replys everyone, the onboard lan chip is a realtek 8111c cheers
