MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition
I'm guessing you didn't modprobe anything? Google modprobe and unraid and AMD.

MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition
You need to probe first, and it won't work at all if you are running 4.7. I understand it will only work if you are running 5.x.

No, that port only supports a single drive. You can add a PCI-e card for more SATA ports though.

These things are so cheap, someone has put together a "Massive Array of Inexpensive Servers aka MAIS": http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2011/06/17/project-massive-array-of-inexpensive-servers-aka-mais/ "64 cpus, 256Gb RAM, 8TB storage, all for $9,000." (that must be with the bundled 250GB drives * 32)

Pimp Your Rig
OK, now I'm just annoyed...in that, I'm thinking why did I spend so much time and effort on putting stuff in cases! This is like the ultimate "skeleton case". Well done!

Pimp Your Rig
Novel! How loud does it get? Do the drives vibrate? Does it get dusty? Why is drive 15 at 58 degrees?

MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition
I've had a data drive and cache drive in there and it was fine with the "roof off". If one drive is the cache, it won't be used during a parity check. I haven't tried it with the "roof on" yet, but in normal use, the lid doesn't heat things up much.

MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition
Well, I was wrong... the offer has been extended yet again to the end of June (UK)! http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/hp-proliant-microserver-221-81-delivered-crescent-electronics/888083?page=61 http://h41112.www4.hp.com/promo/proliantmicroserver/index.html?jumpid=ex_r135_uk/en/smb/tsg/go_proliantmicroserver

What odds would you give on them extending it? The UK offer started way back last year and keeps being extended / coming back. Is it the same on your side of the world? My side of the world is the UK, and the offer was extended many times from February to May, but each monthly extension happened well before the end of the month, so I don't see it happening again for this particular SKU. I think the reason the extensions kept happening was that the units hadn't all sold. There are reports of all the stock in the UK now being sold out, and the same happened in Australia after a much shorter time -- a week or 10 days.

MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition
There are some Australian users who've bought 2 or even 4 of these. I thought about buying a second one, but I already have another unRAID server, so I'd have to buy another license, and many of the tasks I'd like to use another server for need more CPU power. I figure if they bring out another model with more CPU power and do another deal, I might get another one. FYI, the Australian deal has ended and the UK deal ends today.

A couple of mods: 1) SPCR replaced the case fan (whic is harder than it sounds): http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1193-page7.html 2) An dude from OCAU replaced the PSU with a silent PicoPSU -- this also drops power consumption considerably: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showpost.php?p=13224115&postcount=2153 http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/it.A/id.417/.f Also, 3TB drives work: http://usingwindowshomeserver.com/2011/04/19/hp-proliant-microserver-usb-3-0-video-edition/

Where to shop for what?
I just ploughed through the entire Super Specials list. They have some interesting products there that I haven't seen elsewhere, but of the products I wanted to buy, they weren't any cheaper. The WD20EARS was £59.99 without free shipping at Aria (£68.33 inc shipping). It's £53.99 at Scan, with free shipping. So, the total price is 27% more at Aria. If they do have good deals in future, please do post them in the Good Deals section.

UK Scan http://www.scan.co.uk/ -- Huge e-tailer with a very efficient distribution system. Sign up to avforums.com and get free next day delivery: http://www.avforums.com/forums/scan_offer.php You can order pretty late in the day and will usually get the delivery by lunchtime the following day. They text you your order status in real time. Orders are always well packaged -- they wrap bare hard drives in 4 cubic metres of bubble wrap. You could probably play football with the package and the drive would be OK. Their "Today Only" page usually has the best deals. They have also just started offering offers for Facebook fans -- but ironically, I found the deal on Twitter. I don't know if they will Tweet every offer. The first deal was a 2TB Samsung F4 for £53.99. http://twitter.com/#!/ScanComputers/status/58549245086670848 Crescent Electronics A smaller company. I've only ordered from them twice -- first for the HP Microserver, and recently I ordered some RAM. On both occasions they were amongst the cheapest suppliers listed, and of those cheap suppliers, they were the only ones listed who had lots of positive reviews. Some cheapskates on http://www.hotukdeals.com were complaining that their free delivery option was slow -- they quote 5-7 days, and people were complaining that it took 7 days, sometimes longer. I paid £6.99 or so for next day delivery of the server and did receive it the next day. For the RAM, I paid £2.49 ex. VAT for 2-3 day shipping. I ordered that on Friday, so it'll be interesting to see how long it takes to be delivered.

MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition
OK, I had to try out your excellent idea, kapfel. I managed to fit 4 3.5" drives in the top and the 2.5" drive as well! Total drives: 9! I think cooling may be an issue, but the case would act as a heatsink for most of the drives, so I will be trying this out. Some pictures: This is the "bottom layer" -- the drive on the left (back of the case) has the connectors exposed at the rear, and the other drive has the connectors positioned down the groove in the case where the 5.25" drive would normally slide. Here you can see the SATA and power connectors down that groove. The "top layer" of drives. I believe there's plenty of room for cables, although i haven't tried hooking them all up yet. There's more headroom at the top of the case than appears at first glance. Another angle. It's not so pretty with the top back on. The drive is not quite flush with the front of the case, but it's only by 1mm or so. I may trim the SATA plug slightly with a knife to get it further in the groove so the drive is flush and hide the hole with a blanking plate.

I've thought of little else! Seriously though, I did try fitting in another 3.5" drive, but struggled. Your idea sounds clever. Can you post a photo of what you've done (a crappo cellphone pic is fine)? I think I know what you've done, but it would be good to see it. I have a Pro license on this machine, so if I could cram another 4 drives in there, I would! The PSU has to cope with at least 4x 7200rpm drives. With 2x 7200rpm 3.5" + 3x 5400rpm 3.5" and 1x 5400rpm 2.5", I saw a max draw of about 115W at boot. I think they put a 200W PSU in the N36L in this revision, so I'm sure it'll be fine as long as most of your drives are "Green". How did you connect up the 7th drive? Did you add a PCI-E SATA card? I think I'd just use 6x 3.5", replacing my 2.5" drive with a 3.5". I'd be interested to see what temperatures you get for the drives in the top, particularly the 7200rpm drive. P.S. I just ordered a 4GB DIMM, as I keep running out of RAM. That should also speed things up a bit with RAM caching of directory reads etc. Cheers, Neil.

Or a hard drive (slow with standard BIOS). Faster with the hacked BIOS (per first post in this thread.
-
MicroServer N36L/N40L/N54L - 6 Drive Edition
I don't think the BIOS has that option. My 6-disk box runs at 27W with all drives spun down apart from cache, so I am happy to leave mine on all the time.

I understand it doesn't support S3. I think Windows users have WOL working by setting the adapter to respond to Magic Packet only: http://91.151.218.11/showpost.php?s=f5334be210bd95f767647b5a8b1e810d&p=18110314&postcount=279 But this seems to be difficult/impossible to do under Linux: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=18635837
