  1. I have an old 1.5TB drive (still runs fine) but with Black Friday approaching, I may replace it by a new one, larger I have 2 free bays in my rack....How should I preclear it before replacing the old one? Thanks
  2. So which one is really better? Is the Plus a must have and worth the $20 difference?
  3. Hello Was at my local Microcenter, and noticed WD Red Plus 4TB hard drive on sale for $80 I saw the WD Red 4TB on Amazon for $61 What is the difference between WD Red and Red Plus? My server doesn't run 24/7...I turn it on when I need it Assuming I want to buy 1 or 2 drives, can I go with the Red or it's important to get the Red Plus? Thanks
  4. well...that's weird ! I've installed the X6 1055T and its motherboard (GA 880) in another case to use it as a Windows machine I wanted to try 1 more time with the trial flash drive.....and it seems to work ! The only difference is the PSU (I doubt it's the reason) and the absence of the LSI card (SAS 9211 -8i) I have in my server Would it be a compatibility issue between the LSI card and the GA880?
  5. well, false alarm....my server is back in business and running as it was before Too bad it seems my X6 1055T with the gigabyte GA880 didn't work......well, maybe not since power consumption would have not been ideal with such CPU I may need to find something more efficient but still cheap
  6. I must be cursed...I've put back the previous motherboard+CPU And this time, it's the whole box that doesn't even turn on !!!! I did verify at least 5 times the jumpers from the front panel, and they are properly plugged If the PSU quit, then I'm really out of luck.... !
  7. I have virtualization in my BIOS, and it is set to DISABLED...
  8. Well, I just tried with a Kinsgton Datatraveler 2.0, and I'm getting the exact same results. Blinking cursor after "Loading /bzroot...OK" That's weird Even when I try the memtest86+, it says loading memtest...OK, but then nothing other than a blinking cursor That's very frustrating......!
  9. So when I try that, there is no risk to alter any of my drives, right? I just let the server boots, but don't go any further?
  10. I will check what flash drives I have on hand, and will give it a try.... If I were to buy a new one, what brands/models are recommended?
  11. It's an old motherboard (Gigabite GA880) and I don't think I've seen anything about SVM ( AMD-V ) / IOMMU in the BIOS................But I will look again
  12. How should I try with a different flash drive? Use the USB creator first, and then what are the folders or files to copy from my current flash drive to the new one? My current flash drive is a Sansisk Cruzer Fit 4Gb (which is not that old by the way)...What other recommended brand should I try then? Thank you
  13. Could it be the power supply (Corsair CX430) being too weak for this CPU ? What would be the symptoms then? But.....knowing I can access the BIOS, and Unraid starts the boot process anyway (loading bzimage, then loading bzroot...) doesn't it mean the PSU is enough?
  14. I tried to download the latest release (6.8.3 - the one I was running) and extracted bzimage, bzroot and bzroot-gui and replaced them on my flash drive Didn't change anything I also tried the safe mode (with or without GUI) but nothing Same thing for the memtest.....it says download memtest, but nothing happens I know this mobo+cpu+ram works because I used it as my main computer with Windows 10 for many years !!! Please help.....what should I check? Is there anything in the BIOS I may have missed? I would hate to have to reinstall the previous motherboard+CPU....! Thanks
  15. Hello I just replaced my old motherboard+CPU (Atlhon X2 250) that has been working perfectly for several years (as a vanilla server) by a faster CPU (but still old) : a Phenom X6 1055T (with another motherboard as well) I just swapped the board, nothing more...... I was able to access the BIOS, to tell the motherboard to boot from the flash drive But when I get to the attached screen, it seems to stop.....! The cursor under the 2 lines is blinking, but nothing happens What should I look for ? I'm running the latest stable version by the way....Again, has been working flawlessly for several years with no hiccups !!! Thanks
  16. Yes, my current cpu is very low end: Athlon X2 250 with 4GB ram I can switch for free to a X6 1055T and 8GB ram (not high end of course, but still better)
  17. Hello What is the impact of CPU and RAM on a parity check speed? Let's say going from a CPU where the Passmark would go from 1,800 to 5,000 and RAM would double from 4GB to 8GB Should I get faster parity checks, or it's only about the parity drive itself, or the motherboard, or other parameters?
  18. Hello Will this one work with Unraid: https://www.costcobusinessdelivery.com/cyberpower-1350va-battery-backup-with-surge-protection-.product.11993005.html Should I use apcupsd or another one? Should I still avoid to configure it to turn itself off after shutdown?\\ Thanks
  19. OK, thanks....I was watching SpaceInvader One video ("How to setup a Windows 10 VM") Wow, great video.............but it seems complex somehow Anyway, I really liked the explanation on how to allocate the logical CPUs, but now I have a question: since resources need to be properly allocated between Unraid and the VM, does that mean I will never have the same "power" than a dedicated computer (for video encoding for example)?
  20. What happened with non-Gigabyte motherboard then? With 2 GPU (low end and high end), how Unraid will decide which one to use as the primary display? Assuming I decide to NOT use a low end card, but just the one I have (GTX 950)............how would this work then?
  21. Is it only Gigabyte that allows to pick which PCie will be used as primary display? I purchase the Ryzen 5 1600 for $30...........need to find a motherboard that will take my current LSI SATA/SAS 9211-8i board, my current GTX950 for the windows 10VM to play Sims and.............do i need another super cheap card for debug? I'm considering that one for now: https://www.microcenter.com/product/510208/gigabyte-b450m-ds3h-amd-am4-matx-motherboard So it means the cheap graphic board will have to be a PCI-e x1?
  22. Hello all, I have an "old" desktop (Phenom X6 1055T + 8gb ram + Geforce GTX950) - My daughter uses it to play Sims, that's pretty much it I also have my Unraid Server that I use as a Vanilla server (don't have much choice anyway since it's a very old AMD Athlon X2 250 with 4gb ram....parity checks are painfully slow) I was considering upgrading my desktop with a used Ryzen 5 1600 I may be able to get for $30 to be able to rip my bluray collection (way too slow with the current X6 1055T). And my daughter would also use that new build to keep playing Sims Then I thought why not combine everything: upgrade my server with that Ryzen 5 1600, and use it as well for a virtual Windows 10 machine that my daughter can use for Sims, and me to rip blurays with MakeMKV and Handbrake Is this feasible? Is the Ryzen 5 1600 powerful enough? I know i will need a new motherboard.....Considering this one: https://www.microcenter.com/product/510208/gigabyte-b450m-ds3h-amd-am4-matx-motherboard Is this a decent choice? Is 16GB ram (2 x 8gb) the bare minimum, or may be start with 1 x 16GB and upgrade later? Also, I have no room in my current server case to install an optical drive...Can I use an external one thru USB3.0? Thanks
  23. Assuming the R5 1600 is a good deal, I will probably buy it Like I said, I would like to use it in my server to rip my bluray collection with MakeMKV and Handbrake I cannot add an optical drive into my case.....can I add an external bluray drive (USB or e-Sata)?
  24. I can get that used Ryzen 5 1600 for $30....is it a good deal? It was only used for something like 6 months
