  1. Hi Guys, I've been using Unraid for years now, but only as a file server. Today I've started looking at Dockers and VM's and since I'm still a noob at those, of course I've run into my first snag. I also get the "Libvirt Service failed to start" message after enabling VM's in the VM manager. When I look (with midnight commander) at the /mnt/user/system/libvirt directory, there is no such file as "libvirt.img". They way I understand it, Unraid should create this file automatically when the VM's are enabled, no? What am I doing wrong? (Unraid version is 6.8.0 rc6) Thanks!
  2. Ah, that'll probably work! Thanks!!
  3. I've installed a new disk in my array a few days ago, and now the system is currently busy copying everything from my cache disk (that was getting full - unprotected) to the array. I've put the disks into "reconstruct write" mode because it's faster than read/modify/write and ideal for this purpose. This morning I did find however that the system wasn't ready yet, while according to my calculations, it should have been. Even more, it was lagging behind quite a bit. The only way I can see how fast it's going is by looking at how much data there still is on the cache disk, refreshing the GUI and timing how long it takes before another GB has been transferred to the array. So this morning I found this was pretty slow, even though the system was set to "reconstruct write". I then set it back to R/M/W which should be slower, but strangely enough was noticeably faster than the turbo mode. I then set it back to reconstruct write and it was back at the Turbo pace again. But for how long? I was wondering, is there any way to visualize how fast the Mover is moving data? A speed indicator in MB/s would be nice (maybe a log even?), but I think this is not implemented (yet?). Are my findings normal or is something strange going on? Thx!
  4. Hi, I want to use unBalance to give my disks some much needed breathing room after installing a new disk. When I press "calculate", unBalance says: There are some permission issues with the folders/files you want to move 12392 file(s)/folder(s) with an owner other than 'nobody' 0 file(s)/folder(s) with a group other than 'users' 6 folder(s) with a permission other than 'drwxrwxrwx' 0 files(s) with a permission other than '-rw-rw-rw-' or '-r--r--r--' You can find more details about which files have issues in the log file (/boot/logs/unbalance.log) At this point, you can move the folders/files if you want, but be advised that it can cause errors in the operation You are STRONGLY suggested to install the Fix Common Problems plugin, then run the Docker Safe New Permissions command How can I fix this? I installed the Fix Common Problems plugin, but it didn't find all that much. I have no idea what the "Docker Safe New Permissions command" is. Google is no help here. Sorry, Linux newbie Thanks!
  5. It worked! Rebooting the server did the trick, thx!
  6. OK, I'll try that in an hour. Currently the Mover is busy. Cheers!
  7. As far as I can tell, I'm using the most recent version of CA ( 2017.09.03a). Would rebooting the server help? Or maybe reinstalling CA?
  8. Thanks Squid. I just noticed something strange though. I tried some other Dockers and while those did install, things didn't quite turn out the way it was meant to be. First I tried "Acestream". It did install, but I didn't end up with Acestream, but with "Koma-Helix"?? I then tried "Activ Transmission VPN", and it also installed, but in t his case, I ended up with "Tonido" ?? This is very strange, to say the least! Am I doing something wrong here? The only thing I need to do is click on the installation icon, right?
  9. I tried installing this into my unRAID server, but it doesn't work. Dockers are completely new to me, so that might be it. I did have a look at This Youtube vid but it didn't really solve it for me. When I need to fill in the template, I fill in the repo address mentioned in the first post of this thread (https://github.com/dmaxwell351/docker-containers/tree/templates) but it doesn't seem to work. (It says "the command failed")The network setup is set to "bridge", but that's about all I can set? Could somebody please be so kind to give a newbie a step-by-step setup please?

    Turbo write

Got it! Thanks very much for your detailed answer Gary!

    Turbo write

I'm very curious to know what kind of speed gain can be achieved by using Turbo mode. Has anybody already gone through the trouble of copying a set of files first old school style, then again using Turbo write and then compare the speed increase? On the other hand, if I get this correctly: this doesn't make any difference when writing to the array when using a cache disk, right? It only speeds things up when writing to the disk array directly? (I'm guessing because writing to the cache disk doesn't use parity anyway?)
  12. Ah, this is very interesting info! So it seems I'm also SOL just because I chose HGST drives? I've just checked and my motherboard is using the most recent version of the BIOS already. And since that was one released in 2009, I think it's pretty safe to say no further updates should be expected... But doesn't the N54L use an AMD Turion CPU (and thus an AMD chipset)? If so, the problem isn't solely with Intel chipsets... I doubt this problem will be fixable. Maybe by using a separate PCIe card, but even then... I might have a look at the hardware compatibility list. I could give out the hardware of this server to my youngest, he's reaching the age where he could start using his first pc. That would give me the opportunity to buy new hardware. Should I do this, and I create a new unRAID server with new hardware, but with the same harddisks, I'm guessing this will be the same as wel you choose "new config"? In other words: pay attention to how the drives are assigned, choose the correct one for parity etc, and then everything should be peachy?
  13. Ok, almost there! I moved about all the stuff I wanted to move. I now need to get rid of the "movies" share, but I can't find a way to do that. A search reveals that others before me fixed that by telnetting into the server, running midnight commander, go to /mnt/user, and delete it from there. That's what I did, it's effectively gone (also from /mnt/user0), but the "movies" share is still there when I look under the "shares" tab of the unRAID menu. How can I get rid of it for good? Thanks!!
  14. Indeed John! I looked into /root, and there is was! Cheers!
  15. Ah, that clears things up for me! Thanks for your VERY detailed response itimpi! Guess there's nothing else I can do, but be patient...
  16. Ah, that makes sense! Thanks Gary! By now I've learnt the following: - You can copy stuff to the cache disk when the mover is busy, but the speed becomes abysmal. Better to let it finish first I guess. - Using midnight commander in a terminal window instead of Windows explorer give me about 5MB/s speed gain. That's not a whole lot, but hey, if the average speed is only about 20 MB/s, I'll take anything. I've disabled the cache disk for now, because it didn't give me any gain since the stuff had to be moved by the mover afterwards anyway. Why is copying from disk to disk so slow? I know it's probably because of the parity calculations, but isn't this extremely slow? Would this be the same speed "issue" I had with the parity-sync? My CPU is a core2duo 8500, which should be fast enough I reckon? What would be considered normal speeds for such an operation? I like unRAID very, VERY much (and plan to stick with it because I like it so much), but this is about its biggest downside if you ask me. As a server it's a thing of beauty, but when you start working on the server itself, it becomes incredibly slow. Is there any way to speed this up somewhat? (other CPU? GPU it can take advantage of? Some sort of co-processor maybe?). Or is this just "the way it is?"
  17. Another day, another question... I've now started to re-arrange my server. Basically I've got 4 shares now: movies, photos, music and series. I've now decided that I want to create a new share "videos" and move the content of Movies and series both to that. I also want to create a new share under "videos" called "kids', filled with kids stuff. I've noticed that moving stuff if it resides under the same share is instantly, very fast. But if I want to move stuff from "movies" to the new "videos/movies" share, it just copies everything over. Even more, it copies it first to the cache drive (which is not a bad thing since it's faster). In't there a way to do this faster, since all the data already resides on the server, albeit on different shares? Second question: I've aready done one of those "moves" that copies everything to the cache first. Then I got to bed and let the disk mover do it's job overnight. But this morning the mover was still at it. Is it safe then to start another move "and thus copy" job? Or should I let the mover finish it's job first? If I add extra stuff, will the move also eventually move it, or will it only move stuff that was on the cache drive when it started it's job last night, and leave the rest for the next night? Thanks all!
  18. I am using Windows, but that doesn't work. (copying the string it in the win explorer address bar). When I look at the flash disk via the user shares of Windows, I can see the diskspeed.sh file, but there is no HTML file there. Strange. Oh well, doesn't really matter. I've got the results and I like those just as much without the nice graphical output.
  19. Yes, I thought that would be the case. I do plan on using Dockers though, like Plex and a couple of others, but I suppose those would work equally well on a winchester disk as on an SSD, albeit a bit slower. I've checked but the file isn't there. Does it remove itself when you terminate the session? Edit: tried again, but nope, still no html file?
  20. Thanks Johnnie. That's indeed exactly the speeds I was seeing. I went to bed yesterday after starting the parity-check, but this morning I could see that it took unRAID 8hrs 5 minutes to complete the check, and the last speed was 92 MB/s. So that's pretty much on par with what can be expected. Thanks! I've now ran the script, and these were the results: - Parity (HGST 4TB - 7k4000) : 140 MB/s average - Disk 1 (HGST 4TB - 7k4000): 139 MB/s average - Disk 2 (HGST 4TB - 7k4000) : 138 MB/s average - Cache disk (WDC - 2tb): 92 MB/s average - unassigned WDC 3tb : 118 MB/s average Not too bad I think. The 2TB drive might not have been the best option to choose as a cache drive, but it'll have to do until I replace it with an SSD disk. Ah, another question: I don't plan on putting stuff permanently on the cache disk, for now. So it'll be a pure cache disk. If in the future I want to change it to an SSD disk, can I then simply unassign it and swap the disk out? (after having checked it's empty of course). I won't. As you say: it's not like I have to do one of those syncs every week. As long as the speed of the array for daily use is on par, you won't hear me complain. This could very well be the same case for me. I don't use Seagate drives, but I do use HGST drives, combined with WDC. Maybe HGST drives are not that tolerant when it comes to having different brands on the same controller. Yes, that's right. The WDC were still not removed. The 3TB is currently unassigned so I can remove it, but haven't so far because I would have had to power down first for that and I decided not to. I will be removed now though. Thanks for the help guys!!
  21. I'm almost ashamed to say it, but how do I make this diskspeed script work? I have absolutely no experience with scipts etc... Also: I'm now running a parity-check, and that one is running at 187 MB/s!! Anybody got any idea how there is so much speed difference with a parity-sync? (which only managed about 38 MB/s?)
  22. Thanks Johnnie! I'll make sure to run that script when the parity sync finishes. I'll post back here with the results.
