  1. Why is it that in the CA this app is listed as BETA? It looks like its been around for several years now. Is it actually still beta or is that just old? I just want to make sure I'm not going to run into some issues due to it being incomplete/beta. Thanks!
  2. okay, someone just told me that running a second card dedicated to Unraid helped them get a rx580 passed through. I actually wanted a second card anyway because I mostly use Unraid directly and when the VM is on the Unraid goes blank. Does anyone have any suggestions on a video card that will be good too use just for Unraid that has HDMI and a good picture for a big screen ( I pull Unraid up on a 55" HD tv). Something cheap enough that if it doesnt help with the RX580 issue, I wont care lol
  3. I may try that, I was planning on using a second one anyway because I use Unraid directly and when I pass through the VM my Unraid screen goes black. Good to know that having a second card may actually help with the passthrough issue.
  4. I've switched it to Q35. The VM never boots up. I only have one GPU but I log in using my laptop and try to connect using Splashtop. Everything is perfect if I dont pass through GPU, I can open Splashtop and see my w10 VM login screen, it all works....but passing through the rx580 the Splashtop will never see the VM or be able to connect.
  5. I'm struggling to passthrough a RX580 and I've got so much other stuff to do I think I just want to switch to a different video card that will easily work. What are some options of cards that easily pass through? I might keep the rx580 in there to let Unraid use it and have a second one for VM that will be okay for gaming (not crazy hardcore gaming but something thatll work as good as a RX580). I'd be looking for one that is used for under $200. Are there some options that just pass through without a lot of work figuring out how to make it work?
  6. Hello! I'm new to Unraid, servers, vm's, and other IT type stuff so please excuse my lack of understanding about all this....I have no idea what a kernel is but wondering if this will help me. When building my server (first time to build a computer)....I purchased a Radeon rx580 OC Top Edition GPU not realizing AMD GPU's dont pass through easily. I have a VM w10 that works except when I try to pass through the GPU. However, I'm not sure if I can use your custom kernel since I have a Xeon cpu?? Also, not sure if it would help my issue anyway, but someone suggested that it may help. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Stephen
  7. *disclaimer* I'm a week new to all of this and I'm not a IT type so I may not use the best IT speak.... So I am trying to pass hardware through on a VM. When I try to pass the GPU, the VM wont boot up. I thought I might need to add a ROM BIOS file. If so, where would I add it too? In the VM settings when I go to select a path location it doesnt give the option of shares so I'm not sure if there is a specific place I should add it too or not. Also, should I save my current rom bios before adding a new one? I'm somewhat lost here.....not sure how I should go about this or if its really even the problem. Is adding a rom bios what I should be doing? GPU is a Asus Radeon rx580 Strix OC Top and I found some rom bios files here..... https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?did=1002-67DF-1043-0519-E7
  8. These are the ones listed for my exact video card...should I just go with the one that was made latest? https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?did=1002-67DF-1043-0519-E7 I've got not idea what all this is or how to select one....they all seem similar. Where should I save the file too? When I select the drop down in the VM settings I cant select any of my shares. Is there a certain type of system folder I should put the rom bios file in?
  9. If its your only gpu then yes I'm not a computer person and this is all brand new to me (as of last week) so please excuse the lack of understanding proper terminology..... What is the ROM BIOS file? Is that the gpu driver that I would download? Then I can upload it to unraid and then point that VM setting to the file? OR is ROM BIOS something different from the driver? I looked on the manufacturer website and didnt see "ROM BIOS" *UPDATE* So I downloaded the driver from Asus, but it has a setup app to run as well as a folder with drivers for display and audio...which I image you get all of that by running setup. What would I upload to Unraid? I have looked all through the download and didnt see any specific file that says "rom bios"
  10. Do I need to add a "path to ROM BIOS file" for my RX580?
  11. Okay, I had the VM going, I could enter through VNC and eerything was working well, registered Windows, browsed internet....going good... Then I started working on passing through hardware following the part 2 of the Spaceinvader videos on VM"s and now when I am in unraid and start the Windows VM, then try to open it in Splashtop it appears that my VM is not active. I have Splashtop setup and when I was using VNC I would pull up the VM perfectly....but once I change the GPU from VNC to my GPU I cant access through Splashtop....its like Windows doesnt bootup with the GPU selected. Oh also, now when I start the VM, if I am using unraid directly with a monitor for hdmi the screen goes black. So when the VM is started the only way I can look at unraid is by logging in through the lan......is that normal? I suppose because all of my GPU is being directed to the Windows VM so it cant provide video for Unraid....is that correct? my GPU is a Radeon RX580 Strix is that going to cause problems? I only have one graphics card installed. Is there a conflict with the GPU? Thanks!
  12. Nevermind.....got it figured out. I still dont understand those settings but I have them both enabled and it seems to be working.
  13. Hey guys, I'm working on setting up hardware passthrough. I'm trying to turn on VT-d in my bios and it has two options and I'm not sure which to use. Under VT-d there is this.... MCTP (enable/disable) ACS Control (enable/disable) There is no setting to just 'turn on VT-d' rather it has both of these listed under VT-d Should I just enable both?
  14. GOT IT GOING! THANKS! I didnt realize that when I select start I need to start clicking for the drop down to select VNC remote the moment its available. I was actually selecting start and giving it probably half a minute or so thinking it might need to go through a process or something.
  15. Why did you need a different ISO. Are there differences between different Win 10 ISO's?
  16. Im a very new user. I posted this in the VM section but things move slowww over there....hopefully it's okay if I post it here..... I have a Windows 10 VM setup following the SpaceInvader guide. Installed a ISO, etc. However when I click on it and select "VNC Remote" it brings up this pane and no Windows. I have no idea what any of that is or what its about. Is there something I have setup wrong or still need to add? I should point out that I am accessing the Unraid server from my laptop on my LAN. I was logged in to Unraid with Google Chrome and well as tried in MS Edge with same results.

  18. Thanks for the info! I'd give you a like or thanks but I already hit the daily limit of them! That HAS to be a sign that I'm making too many posts per day haha
  19. Sounds good, I need to transfer a Windows ISO file from windows to the Unraid through a SMB share....just wanted to make sure that was going to be okay. Making changes to the data during a parity check seemed suspect. I'm not worried about the slower speed, just wanted to make sure it was okay. Thanks! I'd give you a like or thanks but I already hit the daily limit of them!
  20. SInce we are talking about network stuff, I just wanted to say that I have several shares now showing up on the PC's! Its going pretty good....just need to start getting users and security configured pretty soon.....at this point I do not have any data on the server. I'm getting it fully setup how I want it and know its 'right' before I add data. On a side note and off topic from this thread (just hate to start another one lol )......is it okay to work on the server, messing with dockers, creating shares, creating a VM, and other such things at the same time that the server is doing a parity check?
  21. I wish there was a button I could click that would basically save this post for me lol. I need to start a collection of posts that I'm going to need to refer too over the next month. And yes, as the admin I'll want to have read/write to everything on the server. That walk through of how to see it all in Windows will be a huge help.....THANK YOU
  22. I was misunderstanding you, you were talking about disks and in my mind I thought you were still talking about shared. Sounds good....I was just going to create specific shares for each person to use that their PC and their mobile ph will go too. Basically I have data scattered out all over the place and sometimes we need to find something and have to dig through multiple computers, ipads, phones to find what we are looking for. So I'm just trying to get ALL of our data in one place and trying to figure out the best way to organize it. I appreciate you guys! Without the forum I couldn't have got past just putting the hardware together. Its amazing that I actually have a running and working server.....all thanks to people here on the forum and youtube videos. But I still have a LONG way to go so I'm sure you guys will get sick of me over the next month or so! LOL
  23. I've worked with networked computers but nothing major (setting up a small office network that was all windows) and its been nearly 15 years ago so not like I remember all the details. It was something I had to figured out....at least now I have access to people who actually know what they are talking about! LOL You had mentioned you do not recommend doing network shares....so I was asking if there are some good alternatives that I may consider.
  24. Is there a alternative to creating shares across the lan to a pc? These are for several pc's who have very very basic users (way more basic than even me! lol ). But I want all their data to end up on the Unraid server in a organized fashion. I cant do anything that would require user input, it just needs to be something that happens. Ultimatly, Id like the data to reside only on the server so that the other devices do not get filled up. I also need to use Nextcloud (or similar) for several phones and ipads, but that is a whole different thing. My battle right now is trying to get the local pc's figured out, Id love to hear alternative ideas to a mapped share. Thanks for all the input guys! I've never done anything like this so I'm just feeling my way through what will work, be reliable, and easy to manage, not take a lot of time.
  25. YES, that is what I was refering too......I saw SpaceInvader use it in a video but I couldn't recall the url nor which video. It seems nearly unthinkable that the info is that easily accessible. Then I believe someone in the comments said their ISP had sent them a email about downloading torrents and such, so they knew they had been. It just makes me want to add so much privacy to my internet connection that it looks like I don't even have one! It bothers me that the ISP or anyone else with my IP address can see what goes in and out of my internet connection.
