Screw it! I'm in!

I am soo glad we're not hogging this thread but who cares, Rajahal is away in Europe on vacation
-
It's a SWEET DESERT then?
-
-
It's a floor wax.... No... It's a desert topping...
Wait... It's both....
Joe L.
Joe, are you in trouble now...so, which is it, deSert or deSSert?
-
Yes, a shell will run and do nothing, although I scheduled it for once a year, so it won't do nothing very frequently.
(my grammar school English teacher would probably cringe at that sentence)
Why? What the hell's wrong with a good ol' double negative?
-
Oh, and just to be clear, I have no clue what the hell he just said...
The server is pretty though
-
Yeah, what he said...

Mind you, I damn near had a $hit fit when I realized I needed the USB drive and couldn't find out...it had fallen out when I unpacked the box and yes, I'm a bit brutal when I unpack things.
Anyway, I feel sooo much better now. This is a pretty rig and funnily enough, I happened to order (without thinking of it) a network cable that matches the color of my removable drive trays
Yep, I'm happy

Alright, hooked it up through a gigabit switch and now I'm getting three times the speed roughly. A much needed improvement. Far short of the 55 megs a second but hell, this is fine for me as I do stuff overnight so to speak. I got up from around 5 megs to close to 17 megs. Definitely worth the price of the switch.
So, where IS that duplex thingie...?
-
You should always have a spare ready to go in case one drive fails. That way you don't have to wait for the manufacturer to send you out a new one. You can pop the spare in and then do your regular exchange. That's what I have for my NAS and in my unRaid too. I have one spare of the biggest drive size inside the server.

Ok, where is this duplex thing and what do I set it to?
Does this apply to the unraid too?
Anyway, got a gigabit switch and managed to get it set up and it seems to be a good bit faster now. I'll let you know when I finish some transfers so that I can get the average speed (it lets me know at the end) for transfers.
Before I was barely getting 5mb per second

jazzysmooth,
I really want to thank you for talking me through my setup yesterday. Mucho appreciated

Yeah I moved it and then deleted the first thread.

Ok, I have a 6 or 5e cable and I'm pretty sure that both cards are gigabit and according to my transfer software, I barely even get 5 megs per second
I've decided to slow down and not rush this computer rebuild which IS going to screw me up but I don't see this happening in the next few days anyway. Too much stuff that has to get done.
Also, I've talked to others about a gigabit switch. Will that do the trick too?
THanks

Well, if you just want software that'll help you organize the pics, that's easy but if you somehow want to do it either through the net (do they have to access it over the web from OUTSIDE your house/location?) it's a different story. I would go to the DPReview.com site and ask this on maybe the Storage forum or the PC talk forum. Millions of people over there that just deal with photos.
IF you do, just say server and not necessarily unraid as they may not know what it is.
Let me know if you have questions about DPReview. The other stuff I can't help you with

Guys, I just got my unraid server but need to copy a bunch of stuff over to it before next week and it's slow as hell going through my router.
HOW can I connect the unraid STRAIGHT into my computer?
Speak slowly and use small words please. I'm really bad at this AND understanding written instructions.
THanks

That's alright, nothing for me ever is.
Between you and jazzy above, it got done, now I have to figure out how to do it straight to the puter so I can speed it up. I need to get this info over to it asap.
You've been pretty damn thorough though so I'm still happy

Guys, I just got my unRaid server today but I'm too stupid to get my network to recognize it. Could someone talk me through how to do it OVER THE PHONE? Email and posts are too slow AND I truly have a hard time with reading comprehension and if I TALK to someone, I can ask questions and advice on the spot.
I will naturally call you if you have limited calling abilites and I don't care what country or state you're in or how late it'll be as I stay up VERY late.
I'm in NC on EST and I can easily stay up till 3-5 am.
Help would be greatly appreciated as I'm all hot and bothered and I want my server to work NOW
I"ve had nothing but problems with my hardware today and now my damn workstation can't even get online and hell if I know why. It IS connected to the router and so is the laptop and I can get online with that...
I swear, I HATE computers...
THanks guys

Well, the only thing I can see is that SOMETHING's coming or the big drives wouldn't be dropping like redwood trees!

If unraid has ONE parity drive, what if THAT one fails?

Question about the WD Live unit guys.
It sees my files fine but last night when I tried to PLAY a movie, I couldn't get it to start playing. All I could get was a green dot in front of the movie but it would NOT start playing...it sees all the files fine but won't play anything...?
I had to put the movie on an external HD and play it that way...
Thanks

Hell, I probably don't even want to know this story but like I said, there are good things and bad things on the web. The trick is to try to find as many good and as few bad as possible
Good luck and if you need help, ask me or someone else

That also depends on what you want but if you look on ebay, you can buy used very cheap sometimes. Just make sure you get the right stuff 'cause many of those are for scsi drives..but some come with PSU 'n all
