  1. abeta, why not just get a long network cable? Hell, drill a hole in the floor in run it through the floor. Wont' take much of a hole and you won't have to rely on signals.

By the way, I just got the live and it's slick as dog snot. I ran the software and the damn thing found my puter right up. SWEET as hell. No more moving drives back and fourth.

A buddy of mine is getting the WD TV and I'm keepin' this  :)

  2. Shiit, if that's the only problem, get someone here to send one to you. I'd offer to send you one but then, you'd have to trust me to get it but with paypal, this is easy as hell.

I've done this the other way too. Asked others to help me out in other countries and other locations. So far I haven't gotten screwed but then, there's always a chance.

At the same time, I helped out a guy I didn't know once. He was in india and wanted some plug ins for his Archos (the one that I linked to above) and they wouldn't sell to him

because he didn't have a US credit card or something. Well, he sent me the money through paypal, I got his stuff and e mailed it to him.

That's the good part of the internet. The bad of course is that you can get ripped off and people tend to be very $hitty when they think they're anonymous.

Some of the forums I hang out in are particularly bad about people being rude and so on.

Anyway, I'm sure there will be others here that maybe you've spoken to that wouldn't mind helping.

Shipping will probably cost you around $30 though and then there's the whole issue about insurance vs. customs that if someone wants to, I can explain into detail.

As a foreigner, I've always dealt with shipping to and from different countries.

  3. Rajahal, I just saw this and I actually have something that would be perfect for this...see #15 http://www.extuff.biz/forsale/list.htm

Read the REVIEW. In flight entertainment and you can then delete what you've seen for more storage. Has a 160 gig drive so in divx format, you can get around 150-200 movies. You CAN surf the web, has touch screen, the screen has an amazing quality and you can also record sound, video from a tv, etc and has the option of a helmet cam so that you can even record stuff if you should want to.

  4. Guys, I just bought myself an unRaid server and I want to know what my options are for connecting it to the tv so that I don't have to do what I do now which is put my movies on a passport drive and connecting it to the WD TV. SImple enough but I'm very lazy and dont' even want to do that.

I will have a laptop with wifi and touch screen and a workstation apart from the unraid if that matters.

Oh, and if you reply, please keep it simple as I'm a bit of a dumbass!

    Thanks

  5. Bro, good talking to you tonight and I look forward to getting this unraid server from you.

Drives should be on their way in a day or so.

Prostuff, thanks for the offer but I decided to go with Raja and I actually realized I had already talked to him back in August 2009 when I found out about the unraid.

    Thanks

  6. Here's what I do with my NAS (don't have unraid yet).

I got tired as hell of backing stuff up manually because Laplink which has a great interface kept screwing up, FOR YEARS.

I finally found this software that is pretty much bulletproof so far called ViceVersa Pro. It works like laplink and only moves the newer files or whatever parameters you set.

Here was the problem I had before. I had too many directories and since there was no good way for me to just copy all my stuff in one go, I had to do them one folder at the time and of course, I would forget what I'd copied, ESPECIALLY since laplink kept having problems with this, or that or whatever and I might have all the files moved except a few but wouldn't know which ones were NOT moved/copied.

So, I finally cleaned house and put all my files on the NAS which has a 5.5TB usable capacity in raid 5 so they look like one big partition.

I have a folder called FILES and then three subfolders called music, work and movies.

On my workstation I have three drives since I don't have raid there (long story) and one is called music, one movies and one work.

So, I have two options. Should I want to move or copy the WHOLE thing to something else with storage equal to the NAS, I can just copy/move the folder called FILES and everything comes along nicely or if I move stuff to smaller drives (ie, 1.5 or 2TB) then I just move ONE of the sub folders.

Works the same way if you're updating your  backup. You just tell viceversa pro which folder to move to the nas and it simply moves the newer files only and it can clean out files that are NOT on the source but are still on the backup, etc.

Works very well for me and I am now a happy camper.

Proggy is well worth the bucks.. http://www.tgrmn.com/

  7. Thanks. I wasn't really worried so much about speed as I will have a raid 5 inside the actual computer. This will only be for backup and possibly to run as a media server now that you mention it.

If you run this as a media server, what do you need? I mean, do you have a separate screen for this one with keyboard and mouse or do you somehow control it through your regular computer? I assume that most or all of you use the unraid as a server only and not as your primary computer?

As for failed drives, I would have at least one backup drive anyway. I do now and this won't change in the future.

  8. Guys, I have a NAS that I plan on selling to get an UnRaid unit. Nothing wrong with the NAS, it's a ReadyNAS NV+ with 5x2TB of enterprise drives but I just like the idea of the Unraid better.

However, I had the NAS giving me some errors and the guy at WD suspected that it would be fixed if I got enterprise drives and he was right.

So, my question is, does it matter WHAT drives I use in an unraid? I mean, other than actual drive speed?

I also talked to a guy from here and he suggested I put in an extra drive for immediate transfer and then let the thing update the info/move to the raid while I sleep or something.

With that in mind, speed on the drives shouldn't matter, right?

So, are there any drives at all that shouldn't be used? Slow drives, green drives, etc, etc?

Also, if anyone has a unit they want to get rid of at a good price, I'm interested. With or without drives.

    Thanks

  9. Yeah, I just threw it out there to show that there is at least ONE customer that is interested. You know, maybe some others will show interest enough to warrant some kind of phone number. As it is, I'm too damn stupid to do this without phone support. I hate to admit it but hey, the truth hurts  :)
