  1. I also have the cache_dirs running and it is great for browsing the directories when the drive are spun down. However, there is a delay of a few seconds when I actually try to launch a media file. Which is fine at the start of a movie. However, sometime if I resume a previously watched movie, some of the content in is still in RAM and so the movie starts immediately. But then it would pause a few seconds to spinup the drive when more data is needed and so the movie pauses a few seconds which becomes very annoying.
  2. Thanks BRiT. I will read up on cron and hopefully don't have to manually spin up my drives anymore.
  3. Thank you. I will try and remember that the next blue moon when I have to check up on the unRAID server.
  4. I checked my unRAID this morning and the only entry in the syslog was this: Feb 4 04:40:01 Beanstalk syslogd 1.4.1: restart. Thinking that a new syslog file was created, I went to flash/logs to see if anything happened and could not find a file for the last few days. The last file was 01/25/2011, which was when a new log file was created when the array was last stopped and server rebooted. So I rebooted, but the saved log file starts from only the above entry. So I am missing log entries since my last reboot on 01/25/2001. The last day I ran a manual move of over 1TB worth of cached data and then a parity check afterward and so there should be a lot of entries, especially from the mover. Both processes ended successfully. Is this normal?
  5. I would be interested on doing this too. For now, I am manually spinning up all the drives right before I settle into my home theater for the evening.
  6. No, don't put quotes. It deals with spaces just fine. [Movies] path = /mnt/user/Media/My Movies read only = yes browseable = yes Thanks! I updated the .conf file to remove the quotes.
  7. Thanks everyone, I got things working fine. I am glad I went with unRAID, now time to play with my new Netgear NeoTV 550!
  8. One last question: If I have a space in a directory name is this how my path should look like inside the .conf file? [Movies] path = "/mnt/user/Media/My Movies" read only = yes browseable = yes
  9. Thank you Peter, I will give this a try. Just a few more questions: 01. Do I have reboot the unRAID server for this to take effect orr is there a command line to load the smb-extra.conf file? 02. Will the smb-etra.conf automatically be loaded after all reboot?
  10. Running unRAID 4.7. This is how I have my unRAID server configured with split level 0: Media |_____Videos |_____Movies |_____Pictures |_____Shows This is working great as I expected. I was wondering if there was a way to create a share on one of the sub-folder and yet still present a consolidated view of the actual underlying disks? For example, I would like to create a share on the Movies sub-folder although it is present on several disks
  11. This is the error I get in File Browser if I navigate into a directory with a single quote in the name: Jan 14 19:56:51 Beanstalk unmenu[3825]: sh: -c: line 0: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `'' Jan 14 19:56:51 Beanstalk unmenu[3825]: sh: -c: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of file For example I have a directory named America's Test Kitchen. If I try to navigate into that directory in the unMENU File Browser, the above errors would occur. The web page would not display any entries.
  12. For those who are forcing their newly acquired ST32000542AS drives to firmware CC35, are your drives made in China? Just asking since last month I forced a ST32000542AS made in China to C35 and it failed preclear and so I had to RMA it. I also purchased two ST32000542AS drives for $69.99 from NewEgg during the recent Black Friday sale and they both just passed preclear. Now I am debating whether or not to force the firmware to C35 and then running preclear again. I also have a ST31000520AS (1TB) with CC32 firmware and another ST32000542AS (made in China) with CC34 with data in my unRAID. I am just debating if I should update the firmware to CC35 too.
  13. FYI. If you pay using PayPal, TigerDirect will discreetly slip in an approval to setup preapproved payments from your account as part of the ordering process. Just check your PayPal account profile to see if there are any preapproved payments without your knowledge.
  14. fishface, watch your syslog during the post-read. For me, preclear passed my two EARS that was formatted without the jumper. During the post read, I started getting tons of errors when a certain sector was read (not the entire disk). So I RMA both since I no longer trusted the two drives with my data.
  15. My original two drives worked fine under XP (data only). I too used the WD Align option since I did not own any jumpers at that time. It was when I applied the jumper to install it into my unRAID server. At first I got tons of errors when booting unRAID with the drives jumpered. Then I tried zeroing the drives without and with the jumper on my Windows XP machine using the WD Windows Diagnostic Tool. Zeroing the drive with the jumper allowed unRAID to boot without errors, but then errors would occur during the preclear process. Funny thing though, preclear passed the drives, but the syslog was completely filled with read errors (over 2 gig of errors). Maybe Joe should look into this just in case someone does not monitor the syslog when they preclear a disk. After spending a week trying to get the drives to work in unRAID with the jumper, I cut my loss and RMA the drives. I guess WD really means it when they say the drive cannot be jumpered once it has been formatted without the jumper. I guess the guy selling jumpers on eBay might raise his price if he was reading this forum
  16. Actually, the instructions on the WD EAR drives say to either use the jumper or the WD Align Utility for Windows XP. Of course it also says that for other OS'es the drive is ready to go. I would now use just the jumper since it offers the best compatibility if you want to go from Windows XP to unRAID. I just don't know if you can apply the jumper for unRAID after you have used the drive in Windows 7. I used WD's Warranty replacement. Selecting the advance replacement option, WD will ship the replacement drive to you before receiving your drive (it took 3 days for me). You do have to use a credit card as a guarantee, but they don't charge anything to the card unless you fail to return your drive in 30 days. Going this route vs. a NewEgg return has three benefits: 01. WD package the replacement drive much better than NewEgg. 02. The replacement drive was probably tested prior to being shipped. 03. You are beyond NewEgg's return period (my case). Your old drive's warranty carries over to the new drive once WD receives your old drive. I have to say, I am quite impressed with WD warranty replacement process. Unlike Seagate's process, where they charge you a $20 processing fee for the advance feature, so you are left waiting and waiting and waiting for the replacements drive.
  17. My second replacement drive arrived yesterday. I immediately installed a jumper on pin 7 & 8 and started preclear on the drive. The best advice I can give for these WD advanced format drives (EAR model) are: 01. Immediately install the jumper on pin 7-8 for Windows XP and unRAID. Do not bother with the WD Drive Alignment utility. 02. Once the drive is formatted without the jumper, it will be very difficult to get them to work error free in unRAID with the jumper.

    Norco 4224 Thread

I just installed the Norco 120mm fan plate in my RPC-4224 (it was shipped with the 80mm fan plate). I have three Delta AFC1212DE 120mm fans spinning at 2500 rpm. I replaced the two back fans with Nexus SP802512H-03PWM 80mm fans spinning at 2200 rpm to cut down on the noise. I have 15 drives, but have not assigned parity yet and so I do not have temperature readings for a parity build. I hope the two Nexus can exhaust enough air. If not, I will have to look into getting Delta 80mm PWM fans. I agree that two side 120mm fans would be just dandy.
  19. The new unRAID server is operational, but has a few more items to fix before I can stamp it as fully operational. The new Norco's 120mm fan arrived and the build quality is very good. I have the 3 Delta AFC1212DE fans mounted and with 15 drives temperature ranging from the mid 20's C to low 30's C. Two main items remains: 01. One of the SAS drive plane is defective. At first the problem was compounded by a defective SFF-8087 SAS Reverse breakout cable. I contacted Norco for a replacement. 02. USB cable to front USB port shipped with one MB connector broken. The replacement USB cable shipped by Norco had the incorrect connector to the front control panel (too big). I am in the process of moving data over the gigabit ethernet. At firts moving mkv's averaged about 39 MB/s, but moving VOB's is about 20 MB/s. The difference in transfer rate may be related to the source drives. I can't be sure until I move some VOB's from the same drive as the mkv's.
  20. My two EARS with jumper (firmware 80.00A80): BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=?0? Looks like the MultSect indicates that it has nothing to do with if the jumper is installed? I also recently just received an EARS with firmware 51.0AB51. The first preclear completed in 27 hours where as all my EARS took 30 hours. It is still going through a second round of preclear so I am heistant to issue any commands to the drive.
  21. When I/O errors like this: Oct 24 04:48:14 Beanstalk kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdd, sector 390702 5712 Oct 24 04:48:14 Beanstalk kernel: sd 3:0:0:0: [sdd] Unhandled error code Oct 24 04:48:14 Beanstalk kernel: sd 3:0:0:0: [sdd] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driver byte=0x00 Oct 24 04:48:14 Beanstalk kernel: sd 3:0:0:0: [sdd] CDB: cdb[0]=0x28: 28 00 e8 e 0 7b 30 00 00 08 00 Oct 24 04:48:14 Beanstalk kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdd, sector 390702 5712 occur during preclear, shouldn't preclear_disk.sh exit with a failure? Believe it or not, after filling up the syslog with these errors, preclear ended with a success on this drive.
  22. After returning the first drive where I could not use the jumper on pin 7-8 because the drive had previously been formatted with the jumper, I decided to test the second drive that had also been formatted without the jumper and aligned with the WD Alignment Tool. This time I decided to install the jumper on pin 7-8 prior to zeroing the drive with the WD Windows Diagnostic utility. It worked! Not only did the drive pass the short SMART test with the jumper (the first drive did not) it also did not cause any errors with unRAID. So it appears you would have to zero the drive with the jumper on. Edit: I spoke too soon. Preclearing the disk is yielding tons of the same error related to installing a jumper on pin 7-8. Time to RMA this drive too.
  23. So I am moving data from my NTFS drives to my unRAID disks via the /mnt/disk# using the cp command. However, I have no idea what kind of write performance I am getting other then the disk performance unMenu page. Is there a way to get a summary of the cp command like # of bytes copied and the time it took and an average transfer speed? Basically something like what Teracopy displays while copying. I would assume this would be trivial for Linux. The unMenu disk performace page fluctuates too widely. I prefer the command line since I have not invested time in installing a better telnet than Hyperterminal on my Windows machine. Also I am using the SuperMicro IPMI remote KVM (over LAN) and my laptop mouse does not work for MC. Ironically, for a Windows user, I feel more comfortable on the command line when I use UNIX or Linux.
  24. In my case, the WD Align Tool was used on the drive since I run Windows XP. WD states that a jumper can no longer be used once the drive has been formatted. I even tried writing zeroes to the drive and still I could not use the jumper. The only thing that I did not try was to zero the drive with the jumper installed. I decided to not deal with it and just requested an RMA on the drive. I do have a WD15EARS that is in the same situation, but I think I will keep it on my Windows XP machine for now instead of migrating it to unRAID.
  25. Looks like the cp command handles Unicode folder names correctly.
