  1. OK, will do. Thanks EDIT: deleted post after this...rutorrent came up
  2. Hello all, I’ve been using unRaid for only a few months. I knew nothing about Linux before I decided to build my system, but feel it was all worth it. I check the forums several times a day to keep up on the latest buzz. The community members are helpful providing [free] advice when asked. So let me get to the point. Linux has a steep learning curve for most users. I see the phase "I’m new to Linux" quite often in the forums (myself included). The hero members (too many to name) efforts are best used to improve unRaid. Joe’s dir cache script and unMenu for instance are essential additions I'm glad exist. I would never have conceived of these on my own. I don’t ask much of my server, but defiantly would like it to perform some other tasks. I find myself bouncing all over the forums, piecing together posts just to get one additional system setup and working. The Wiki is ok, but usually just points to forum posts. I feel there should be a standardized instructions area for unRaid enhancements. I remember an exercise in grade school to take a simple task like making a PB&J sandwich, and then trying to write instructions for the teacher to follow. It was harder than it sounded (and not many sandwiches were made). Each step needs to be very simple and very short. Not to toot my own horn, but I spent several days proof-reading my Subsonic Installation to make each step straightforward for even a newbie. Most of the common additions boil down to installing packages, copying a file, and editing a configuration. Some ideas to start off... Instructions should be numbered for easy reference. A format template would keep things consistent. Download file X, install file X, configure file X…next part. Instructions should be consistently reproducible. I find it very helpful when instructions include code snippets even for simple copying files. Copy and paste into a file or telnet window take out the guess work. Full path names help too. I like contributing to the community even with my limited knowledge. I have much to learn still and hope this is not out of line. - Cheers
  3. Flixxx. I was working through the instructions and got stuck with this. Where is this rtorrent.rc file (I do get cross-eyed in the wee-hours)?
  4. Step 1 & 2 are easy enough. Step 3 & 4 I don't understand. Could you share a quick example please?
  5. This is something I was wondering about for unRaid. I'm going to give this a try this weekend. What does the "screen" package do? I run my system headless. Thank you for the writeup.
  6. What is the proper command to mount and share if you wanted to script this process in the go script upon boot (if the usb device was always plugged in)? Thx
  7. aaronjb, What CPU are you using? What encoding speeds to you see? I get ~10fps and ~3hrs (give or take) to encode a movie (basically tweaked setting of the 'classic' preset with a --quality 20). I find HandbrakeCLI runs better on unraid with my single 2.7Ghz, than on my windows Dual 2.0Ghz. I attached my Handbrake queue script. Its not user friendly with arguments and all, but neatly written. I run a tweaked S3 Sleep script. I wanted to be able to drop ISO's into a directory and have the script pick them up as long as there is time before I want my box to sleep at night. The sleep script won't shut down while the drives are spinning. So, as it loop though the files and adds 3hrs for ISO and 2hrs for mp4 (using the _small.sh settings) files until 7pm is exceeded. Just wanted to share what I worked on this weekend. P.S. I'm so happy this works on unRaid. Thank you for the latest compiled version ClunkClunk
  8. I looked at unRaid about 3 years ago as a solution and decided to go with a big windows box. It finally filled to the brim and I looked into into an expandable (and redundant) storage solution. The support I received in my build thread helped me a to make a decision. I'm so very glad I didn't go with a drobo. My only concern was the longevity of the company. I plan to keep my unRaid for many years (still have some room to grow) and hope the community support is there if I need it. Although, currently I feel 4.5b11 could run for years without an issue (I still have a few questions about some syslog lines). I only need to get 3 services working and the computer will be perfect. Boof, I'm a little jaded with windows these days since I've been a windows programmer for 10+ years. Being new to linux, I like the predictability of it so far. cdp181, I agree. unMenu should be installed by everyone. I go to it first mostly.
  9. Although I am new, I'm happy so far using unRaid as my expandable storage solution. I'm quiet impress how well Linux handles whatever I throw at it. Even better than similar windows counter parts.
  10. The forums have been buzzing because of the beta releases. Maybe this was overlooked. I'm not new to running a ftp server, but still don't know why I can't get vsftpd working (or proftpd). I have a 'ftp' user with a home directory set correctly (I think). The permissions on the directory are set too. At least with proftpd I could login, but couldn't get the folders I wanted to show up (let alone sftp wouldn't work). At least with vsftpd, the secure part seems to work. Everything seems in order (allow_anon_ssl=YES, force_anon_data_ssl=NO, and force_anon_logins_ssl=NO). Logs arn't created either.
  11. Why do I see files created like ".fuse_hidden0000023900000007" in some directories? Its about 10megs.
  12. iftop is a great program to monitor network speed. package can be found here: http://www2.linuxpackages.net/packages/Slackware-12.0/Console/iftop/iftop-0.17-i486-1kan.tgz
  13. I have searched the forum and internet, but can't get vsftpd to work properly. I have attached my vsftpd.conf. I am using Filezilla as an anonymous user from another computer on the network. I have attached my vsftpd.conf file. I have created a RSA cert with openssl (openssl-0.9.8g-i486-1.tgz). There is a ftp user in my passwd file. I type "/etc/rc.d/rc.inetd restart" to apply my changes, but I'm still stuck. Response: fzSftp started Command: open "[email protected]" 22 Command: Trust new Hostkey: Once Command: Pass: ************** Error: Authentication failed. Error: Critical error Error: Could not connect to server
  14. unRaid worked without a BIOS update, but I did update hoping I could unlock the second core (I have the same Sempron 140). I was one of the unlucky ones.
  15. dredge, so it looks like the 16x slot will work with a PCIe card. I contacted gigabyte and I was told the PCIe x16 only works with video cards. I never got around to testing this. How many of the PCIe slots are you using currently? VampyreGTX, This board has been working with no problems. I planned to have a total of 12 drives in my unRaid (3 slots to grow). Using the 6 on board and getting three Rosewill RC-207 PCI Express x2 cards. There is a link to my build thread in the original post.
  16. I have never seen this error, and there is no mention on the forums. The main page does auto-refresh to display random cover art. Also, each album page has a "zooming" affect when you click the cover art. My unRaid box is fairly stock 4.5b11 install. I have no other packages that should affect subsonic running (iftop, htop, proftpd, jre, ntfs-3g, apcupsd, unMenu). Where are you seeing this error?
  17. Thanks for the quick reply, I get the following error when trying to restart the apc service... root@unraid:/etc/rc.d# rc.apcupsd restart Stopping apcupsd power management.../rc.apcupsd: line 33: kill: (11110) - No such process Failed. Starting apcupsd power management..touch: cannot touch `/var/lock/subsys/apcupsd': No such file or directory Failed.
  18. I wanted to just be able to drop .ISO files in a directory and queue up encoding. There is no queue in the CLI, but with my limited scripting knowledge I was able to piece together some scripts that almost work. I have a few small questions. handbrake_queue.sh; ln 59 I would like the output file name to be the same as the ISO. My script is using the "basename" command and appending ".mp4". This produces "movie title.ISO.mp4". How can I remove the ".ISO" handbrake_queue.sh; ln 16 - I'm trying to determine if any ISO files are in the directory. I can't seem to get this to work correctly. if [ $(ls -l $ISO/*.ISO | wc -l) -gt 0 ] I start "handbrake_queue.sh &" so it can just run in the background. Its a never ending loop with a 1min (will up this to 10min) delay between checks for new .ISO files. On line 74, I start /queuelist.sh & the same way to prevent the process outputting to the screen. Is this a good way to go about this? Thanks
  19. Biggy, I finally got around to testing these changes. The instructions you provided worked and I can see the "MAXTIME : 180 Seconds" when i query "/sbin/apcaccess status". If I copy /etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf to my flash and make changes. Then run "apcupsd -f /boot/apc/apcupsd.conf", the apcaccess status reports nothing has changed. No changes are reflected if I copy apcupsd.conf file back to /etc/apcupsd/ and run "/etc/rc.d/rc.acpid restart" either. How can I make changes to the APC settings while the system is running? Many Thanks
  20. I'm a patient person, so how long encoding takes is not such a big deal. Would you mind posting your script Joe? I seem to average 15 fps on my unraid.
  21. OH! I missed this. I've been using DVD Decrypter+MeGui (older version for years) to archive my DVD's (-x264 crf18). I recently just found out about Handbreak and have been testing its results on my WinXP. I was going to build a small windows box thinking this would be too difficult to get encoding working (me=linux n00b). I only have a lonely single core, but if this works I may just add a dual-core to my unRaid and save some money.
  22. I'm also considering the WD TV Live instead of building/buying a computer, booting the OS and all that headache that comes with that http://gizmodo.com/5397986/hd-media-player-battlemodo-apple-tv-killers
23. I was trying to stream to my Wii (don't laugh) in the Opera browser the other night (it worked but video sucked). I had both Tversity and Orb running. I was also testing streaming while at work. Both had issues, but Orb did work better in the end. Tversity... + It can be set to stay within the network or be exposed outside + Simple interface (good or bad) - Issues with divx, but would transcode mp4/aac Orb... + Displays thumbs of movies. + Lots of sharing options - Can't ensure its not going around the internet just to get go across the room. - Divx worked, but mp4/aac would hang The mp4/aac files were large 1-2gigs movies. I only played with them both for one day, further testing is needed.
  24. Good article has me considering Asrock ION 330HT http://lifehacker.com/5406563/build-a-cheap-but-powerful-boxee-media-center I've played played a little with both of these applications. Both do basically the same thing and each have their pros and cons. Just wanted to share as long at we are talking about media serving http://www.orb.com/ http://tversity.com/
  25. The "subsonic_copy_from_memory.sh" script is vital. When you reboot all the settings in the DB are lost. At least the /var/subsonic/data folder needs to be copied back to non-volatile memory. This is why a cron job is added in the go script to run the script once a day and also when the server is rebooted/shutdown. Did you add the hook into the shutdown process? My machine S3 suspends each night, but I do reboot often since I'm testing/learning/setting up the server still. Subsonic has been stable with these scripts in place for a few weeks. Although, I'm sure the setup could be improved
