I'm a PC guru with very little knowledge in network storage.  A problem I am currently working on.  Unraid was gifted to me by my son and I whole heartedly received this gift of network storage.  I have a basic license.

    I plan to build with:

    4 x 2TB 7200 HDD

    1 x 2TB 7200 HDD Parity

    1 x 512GB SSD cache

    My computer is:

    Asus P6T7 WS

Intel Xeon E5520 (with a Hex core CPU in the wings for later swap-out)

    24GB DDR3

I plan to use this array for media storage along with Plex to watch my "stuff".  I also plan to load this machine with GPUs for Folding at home in a VM.  This machine is caseless at the moment.  It is running in a cool basement.  I will keep the drives in a drive cage and away from the hot GPUs.

What tips can you lend to help me learn, build and maintain this setup.

It looks to be ok without a deep search on all items.

I would use the ssd as your appdata (dockers) drive. On this drive, Plex can run along side other dockers I am sure you will want to play with. Even Folding@home is on a docker, so no need for a VM.

I don't have much of anything else except have fun and enjoy Unraid.

Tell everyone using your Plex server to pony up $10 for unlimited access to your Plex libraries and buy a Plex Pass.  Then you can use hardware (iGPU) transcoding and be rocking a dozen streams or so with little load on the CPU.  😀

LOL I should have them pony up 100.00 dollars for the server upgrade.

I'm loving this board/ram.  Excellent results.  I went with an E2278G from Provantage.  No complaints.  For cooler, I chose the Arctic Freezer 33 and added a second 120mm fan.  It just clears the RAM and just clears my 4U Supermicro chassis lid.  Provides a good amount of cooling.  Very quiet.

With having a bunch of users, I would recommend getting a Plex pass so you can take advantage of HW transcoding with igpu (QuickSync); it's amazing.

Thanks for the fan info, will take a look at the Arctic Freezer coolers.

I don't use plex. Kodi through my network. Picture taken behind my seating on a 110" screen.

  3. The reason I have finally decided to upgrade, is from the stupid covid-19 has got all my nieces, nephews, sisters and other friends now using my plex server almost all the time. This leaves me once work is done with interruptions when I want to watch something. My i5 just can not handle it all. I can watch my cores hitting 100% until the stream buffer is done. With this upgrade I should have a lot more head room.

I think it should still be enough.  In most cases, the CPU is consuming less than 100W.   Noctua claims it can consume up to 230W (that seems high) at Turbo speeds.

In this review of the E-2288G, STH states the maximum observed wattage consumed by the processor is 151W and that was in performance (Turbo) mode.

At this moment, my UPS claims the server is using 144W and the CPU has 10 of the 16 cores maxed out (but at non-Turbo speed).

I am using a 600W SFX power supply.  Granted, you have a lot more drives than I do, but, HDDs don't require a ton of wattage.

You do not necessarily have to go that big.

Noctua rates their coolers based on how much headroom they have for a processor at overclocked/turbo speeds.

They don't list the Xeons, but the E-2288G is basically an i9-9900K with ECC support.

Here are the ratings for various desktop chips for the NH-U14S CPU cooler.  It is much smaller than the NH-D15 but is still rated to provide the best overclocking headroom for the i9-9900K.

With CPU (software) transcoding, the CPU will handle 7-8 simultaneous 1080P streams.

Software transcoding is based on passmark score and the E-2288G has a passmark score of 17,316.

Plex recommends 2000 passmarks per 1080P stream and unRAID needs about 2000 for system overhead.  You could comfortably get 7 simultaneous 1080P Plex streams and may be able to push it to 8 if nothing else is happening on the server.

    Thanks Hoopster.

I brought the other quotes from Good Deals thread over here to try and keep that thread somewhat on topic.

The reason I would get the bigger Noctua cooler is for the reason my server is in the attic. My temps during a parity check have never gone over 42c for my drives and with a larger cooler for cpu I would hope to not add any more heat inside. I live in TX and things do get HOT here but my attic is very well insulated  keeping the outside temps from invading the attic space. Even though I have recorded temps in the mid-high 90's F up there.

This processor really loves to consume wattage and produce heat at sustained turbo speeds.

So I am assuming that the larger the cooler the better off I would be. I may order the Noctua NH-D15 and hope it fits. Have my server in attic and will not break it down until combo arrives.

After thinking about what you have posted I am wondering if my silverstone 750 gold will be enough power with all my drives and new cpu.

    LinuxServer Folding@Home

Added to CA on March 20th.  At the time of it being added, there were 14 downloads.  Today (April 6) there are 134,884 downloads

As of May 4th (4:38am EST), there are 588,162 total downloads

Team Unraid on Folding@Home just broke into the top 150 teams. Congrats to all that are helping out..

Thanks @Harro! I have a side-question. What card do you use to add that many hard drives?

I can't seem to find the Norco in Denmark (small country in Europe), so I might need to go with the Icy Dock, but the Norcos seems a lot more appealing.

I started with 2 HP 200 cards and last year changed to a LSI 9300-16i. I am using 12 of the 16 lanes on the LSI with the additional drives coming from the sata on motherboard. With this combination my parity checks have been running over 150 MB/s and taking about 18.5 hours.  I am happy with these numbers seeing as I have 150TB to check when I run parity.

I have never worked with something like the 5x3 cages.

How are they in regards of cooling? And can you recommend any specific brands and models?

@Hoopster Yes it's kinda starting to show that my "I need a super cooler" wasn't the best brainfart I ever had 😅

I use the Norco cages in my main server and also use an Icy Dock in my back up server.   Here is my main server with the Norco's.

    mpz4N12l.jpg

The cooling on the Norco have kept my drives pretty steady at between 19-41c depending on the time of the year. The fans are loud and I had switched them out for quieter ones but the temps on drives went up too much, so switched back to the factory fans. My server is in my attic and it does get very hot up there and during the summer I have an oscillating fan that blows on the front of the cages. This has kept all my temps down, even while a parity check is running. I like the Norco over the Icy Dock but from a quick search on google haven't found any available.  Norco uses sata power and the Icy Dock uses Molex connections for power. Also the Icy dock needs a drive in all the slots in order to power up . At least it did with mine. The Norco will power the drives even if the cage is not full.

Not the prettiest wiring but it works. I also added an extra 2 drives in the inside, which I now use as parity.

This is really tempting. I just do not know how much I would gain by upgrading my one large server. I basically use just as for media storage but do run a plex server with no more than 2 ppl on it at any one time. No VM's but have had the idea to tinker with them.  Will continue to monitor that ebay site.

  10. Another tool to help you see what is going on with drives and connections would be  @jbartlett disk speed docker. By using this docker and gradually replacing smaller drives with larger ones I decreased my parity time from 1 day, 7 hr, 57 min, 11 sec @34.8 MB/s on Feb.2017 to 18 hr, 29 min, 10 sec @150.3 MB/s  on Feb 2020.  I am quite happy with how everything is running.

Because I work with web design tools like WordPress, I know that better solutions are possible.  Instead of stretching, the image could be scaled keeping the aspect ratio fixed.  Possibly the Unraid text elements could scale with the image, maintaining positions on top of graphical elements.  If cropping is necessary, I think cropping top/bottom is preferable to cropping the sides, though I'm sure there could be some banners where cropping width is a better solution - perhaps that could be a setting we can toggle

    This would make perfect sense.

I have made some sound absorption panels that are 2x4 ft with custom photo's I had printed. In order to get my photo's to look really good printed to this size I need to increase the dpi to a huge number of 600 dpi, which in turn created a whooper of a file size of close to 1 gig. But my printed panels look excellent. Getting to the point that banners may need different dpi according to resolutions of monitors. Not that we need a huge file size for a banner. But with a higher dpi the stretch would decrease the look of distortion of the image.

Thanks! That's a great question, when I tried that image it got even more zoomed in! Here is what a part of it looks like.

Let me try something else. What size is your monitor?

Love this! Anyway to make it widescreen? It looks very stretched out on my 3440x1440 ultrawide.

what height do the banners need to be?

    here is one 3440x90
