Leave encrypted disks unmounted and manually mount with passphrase (from windows client?)
Hello Aim: I have an encrypted disk and an unencrypted disk in my array. I want the unencrypted disk (or user shares on it) to be available to access in windows (mounted), while the encrypted disk (or user shares on it) to be only accessible once I’ve entered the decryption passphrase (unmounted until passphrase entered). Questions: At the moment when I start the array, the encrypted disk is unlocked (and it is not asking me to enter a passphrase) and all disks are mounted. How can I change that behavior so that only the unencrypted disk is mounted? (I want to be able to access the unencrypted disk while leaving the encrypted disk locked). Why is it not asking for me to enter the passphrase to start the array including the encrypted disk? I assumed that I would need to enter the passphrase each time I want to unlock it? When I want to access the encrypted disk, I want to be able to manually mount it by entering the passphrase. Can that be done in windows without having to access the webgui? Ideally I'd like to be able to power on the unraid server and have the unencrypted disks automounted and have them mapped in windows so they are immediately accessible. Also have the encrypted disks mapped in windows, but when I try to access them it's asks me for the passphrase which then decrypts and mounts the drive and allows me access. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
It just dawned on me that the NIC in my Linux client is also an i226 intel. OST results are 2.5g down and 2.0G up. So I dont think it's related solely to the realtek nic. Got to be a setting somewhere. Or it couldn't be related to an old GPU I have installed in the Unraid server could it?

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
There was a suggestion in the linked reddit thread that it may help fix bandwidth in both directions. Thought it was worth a shot. Also changed MTU to 9000 and Jumbo Frames in windows to 9014, disabled interrupt moderation but maxing out at 1.85G up. Oh well, will keep playing / searching. Thanks all, for your help. If I get any joy I will post back.

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
So downloaded the latest driver for my motherboard RTL8125B Nic from realtek website and installed on windows pc. Retested - slight improvement at 1.85G up. Found THIS thread, suggested to update Unraid (I was on 7 but now on 7.01). Also installed the Realtek RTL8125(B) plugin in Unraid. Rebooted both server and PC. Ran OST again. Results: Open Speed Test Do you think it's worth spending out ~£35 to buy an i226 intel NIC to put in PCIe slot in motherboard to avoid using the Realtek motherboard NIC? do you think that would give me the full bandwidth in both directions, or is this more likely a settings configuration issue? what about stuff like MTU / jumbo frames, interrupt moderation and other stuff mentioned in THIS guide?

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
Ok thanks. How do I check the NIC driver that's installed on the unraid server, find the best version to use instead, and how do I update it? sorry, I'm used to doing everything in a windows environment. Can I get it to scan for newer drivers and auto-update or would I need to find a NIC model number and go online to search for the newest version? And once obtained, how to install it? Thanks

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
Ok got access by going to sharing tab of network connections and selecting the checkbox and selecting a connection from the dropdown box. I've since ran the open speed test docker on unraid and connected from the PC browser to run the test. Now only getting 1.6G up and down when using direct cable, whereas was getting 2.5G down and 1.7G up when using the switch!? Any idea what that's all about?

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
Thanks, Use SSL/TLS is set to No. Is that what I'd want for direct connection? I set the static IP in the unraid network.cfg file the same IP as what the server usually gets assigned via DHCP that I use to login normally (and that is the IP that is saved under windows credentials (which has the username and password that I set up in Unraid). I had set both windows and unraid to have static IP's in the same subnet, so unless the SSL/TLS should be set to something other than NO, I'm still not sure what I'm missing.

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
Hi Guys, Regarding the LAN speed, I'm trying to connect my windows client directly to the unraid server to test the up and down speed without the switch to eliminate that as being the issue, but I can't connect. I've given unraid a static IP in the network.cfg file and set DHCP to no. Connected PC nic to unraid server nic with direct cable (tried both standard and crossover cables) Disabled firewall Set static IP in PC adapter settings in the same subnet as unraid static IP Set PC sharing settings as follows: pc sharing settings Adapter keeps saying "unidentified network" and cannot access Unraid GUI through the browser - "unable to connect". Probably being stupid or missing something obvious, any ideas? Thanks

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
If my shares are all set to private, should I have a windows credential entry for the server?

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
Thanks @Frank1940 I will check out the PDF's /post this evening. I assume this is not the same as setting all shares to private? I thought it said when I did this "guests have no access" or something along those lines. It was mainly just a query to ask if there was any things that were considered as good practice to add in there to improve security, or if leaving it blank is fine for the average joe.

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
Ok thanks. What would be the best way to eliminate things? I don't think it's the cables - they are brand new cat 8 (yes I've already been told don't need cat 8 lol) and the switch is also brand new 2.5gb nics - may need to see if there's a firmware update available for it though. I've installed all the latest drivers for my motherboard. How do I check if drivers need updating for the other nics? Do you have any views on the guide that I've linked and the SMB extra configuartion question? Thanks a lot

Securing and Optimizing SMB shares
Hi All, Q1. Is there anything you would recommend to add into the SMB extra configuration settings field to increase security of SMB shares? Is there any resources that I can refer to for this? Q2. I found THIS guide on optimizing SMB shares in Unraid. Was keen to get some feedback on if this is still relevant and the advice in the guide is worth following / testing. At the moment when doing an open speed test / iperf3 test between server and client, I’m getting almost 2.5G download (2.5GB nics) but only about 1.7G upload and I’m not sure why UL is not also reaching 2.5G. The guide suggests that disks shares perform faster (overhead of FUSE) but I believe the general advice on this forum is to disable disk shares and not to use them? I'm not a very technical Unraid user so If you know of or can recommend any other guides that maybe useful regarding these subjects, that'd be helpful. Many Thanks

Share is outside the list of designated disks, settings all wonky
Thanks for the tips guys! I will use only user shares, Dynamix file manager and high water allocation method going forwards.

Share is outside the list of designated disks, settings all wonky
Sorry, what I meant to say was: with the allocation method set to "Most Free" after clicking the move button I assumed this would move the data.... Looks like I need to use "split only top level directory" in split level settings in order for it to work. Anyway, Once I've got all my data where I want it on the disks, I'll set it to High water going forwards. Just to confirm, if I want to manually move data, I can disable user shares and enable disk shares, and then move my data using MC where I want it, and then re-enable User shares. Any data then added to the user share afterwards will work based on the user share settings?

Share is outside the list of designated disks, settings all wonky
Ah yes, now you say that, I remember that a percentage of the drive gets used up for that. So how can I view that / should I be able to see it in MC or is it hidden (but not considered as a "hidden" file)? I've tried to move some of the data I moved out back to an existing share, for which I have set the included disks to the two lower ones (2x 4TB) shown in the screenshot above, and have set the allocation method as "Most Free". I assumed that this would move the data into the bottom disk because it is the most free of the two that I've included (this is what I want), but it has transferred the data into the one which already has 2.22TB in it. Why is it doing that when the allocation method is set to most free?

Share is outside the list of designated disks, settings all wonky
Last night I transferred all the data out of share 2 to a disk outside of the server. When I look inside the share folder under /mnt/user/share2 using MC it shows it's empty (I made sure that show hidden files was on). Share 2 was set to use disk 2. On the MAIN tab, disk 2 still shows that ~28GB is used: I stopped the array, disabled user shares and enabled disk shares so I could check the disk 2 contents and again, both in MC and on the windows client, show no files. Any ideas why Unraid is showing ~28GB used on the disk if both the user share that was set to use that disk, and the disk when viewing in MC are both empty? How can I find out what that 27.9 GB of data is?

Share is outside the list of designated disks, settings all wonky
Hi All, I had Share 1 > disk 1 and share 2 > disk 2. I wanted to end up with share 2 > disk 1 +2. I changed the settings for share 2 to also include disk 1. For share 2 now I get the message "share is outside the list of of designated disks" when pressing the compute / compute all buttons. If I now click on Share 2 to go to the settings page, the settings are all confused - the included / excluded disks section is showing twice, I cannot change the included disks for that share, and the settings do not correspond to the setting titles. How do I go about resolving this? Basically I want to delete share 1 and keep share 2 across both disks, but I can't delete share 1 because it contains data. How do I get the data from share 1 into share 2 across both disks so I can delete share 1 (the data is already where it needs to be on the physical disks). Can I unassociate the data with the user shares so I can delete them and create a new one that goes to disk 1+2 for any new files? Hopefully the solution won't involve having to move any data from the disks where it currently resides. Thanks for any help

NFS vs SMB when using both Linux & Windows Clients?
Hello I have both windows and Linux Clients connecting to Unraid shares. My understanding is that I can use either for both OS's, but NFS is generally proffered for Linux and SMB is proffered for Windows. What should I opt for for best performance, security, and ease of setup/use when using both OS's? Thanks,

Installing software on windows client from Unraid Shares / Performance when using files on Unraid shares
Hi All, I have some .exe files for software packages saved in a share on my Unraid server that I want to install on my windows pc. In some cases when I double-click an .exe file it'll run and let me install the software, but the majority of the time nothing happens when double-clicking the file. If I then copy the file to a local disk on the windows pc, I can install it. Is this expected behavior? Why would some .exe's work and not others? And more generally, what are the limitations of files stored on the server rather than on the local disk? Should they behave in the same way? Can Unraid network shares be considered as local disk extension? What about performance for example when using files stored on the server for things such as audio and video editing software running on windows? Should / could I expect the performance to be as good as files stored locally? Thanks,

How to manually use cache drive for specific files / size of cache drive
Generally these files wont be accessed regularly except for when I am working on the project that demands them. So would you say the first suggestion of moving files into a share that only uses the pool is the best option here? I'm assuming most people would want performance when using certain files on their server, is that what most people would do? transfer them to a share that resides in cache only?

How to manually use cache drive for specific files / size of cache drive
Hi Guys, If I want specific files to be on the cache drive for best performance (for example video files for use in a video editing project), how do I temporarily move just those required files to the SSD cache drive? At the moment all those files are on user shares that are set to Cache > Array. As far as I understand, I can set the share that those files reside in to be set from Cache > Array to Array > Cache (and then run the mover?), but what I don't understand is, that share may have XX TB of data on it, whereas my SSD drive is only 500GB. When set from Array > Cache does it just load the individual files into the cache drive when I access the individual files on the array, like adding them to the media bin in my project? If I have 1TB of video files that I may or may not end up using in my project, does that mean I'd need a 1TB cache drive to be able to load them all into cache to enable the best performance when doing the editing? With my current 500GB SSD, I assume I'd have to load half of them, work with those first and then move those files back to the array to empty the cache drive, to load the second half? Thanks

Auto mount of SMB shares via /etc/fstab not working
Based on the info HERE I changed to: //192.168.50.110/Disk5 /mnt/Disk5 cifs x-systemd.automount,credentials=/root/.smbcred 0 0 //192.168.50.110/Disk6 /mnt/Disk6 cifs x-systemd.automount,credentials=/root/.smbcred 0 0 This now works for me :)

Auto mount of SMB shares via /etc/fstab not working
Hi All, I'm trying to get Linux to auto mount my Unraid shares on startup. I have cifs-utils installed. My fstab file contains these two lines: //192.168.50.110/Disk5 /mnt/Disk5 cifs _netdev,noserverino,credentials=/root/.smbcred,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 //192.168.50.110/Disk6 /mnt/Disk6 cifs _netdev,noserverino,credentials=/root/.smbcred,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 In my .smbcred credentials file I have used the unraid user and password that I've configured access to the shares for, and domain=WORKGROUP. But I'm wondering if I should be using the username and password of my Linux user login? Also does it matter if my Linux username and password are different to that of the user that I've set up in Unraid? If I sudo mount -a both drives will mount. Does that mean my .smbcred credentials are ok? However when I restart the drives will not auto mount. Can anyone help? Does anything look incorrect with my fstab entries? Thanks

Mounting private disk shares in linux mint
Hi All, I have two private disk shares in Unraid that I'd like to automatically mount on my linux client on the LAN. I believe it involves editing my /etc/fstab file on the linux client. I've found lots of stuff online about what to write in the fstab file (cifs / nfs / smb etc) and I'm not sure what I'd need to write or what is the best way of accessing the shares. I found this THREAD, is this along the right lines by using CIFS? Is that the best way? Also I assume I'd have to allow access for the client by adding a new user in Unraid? I'm an inexperienced linux user so I'd really appreciate some guidance on how to do this. Many Thanks
