  1. A lot of the RAM/Voltage/MB problems were resolved when the Enhanced Performance Profile portions of the SPD standard were added.... before, the SPD was often populated with the advanced performance mode, which required more than 1.8V, only... and the motherboard would obligingly read the SPD and set the timing as such, but if your MB was set on AUTO for it's ram voltage, the RAM only got 1.8V and failed... catch 22 on setting up the motherboard... NOW, the Jedec (first read) portion of the SPD gets set with some rather slow timings (stock?) so that the RAM will work at 1.8V, and the EPP profile in the SPD has the advanced timimgs which require more volts...

    ;)

Thanks for your answer. I didn't understand one single word of your text. As I wrote in my initial message - I'm no hardware guy. I'm just looking for someone who owns that motherboard (someone should have it - it's the Limetech board) and successfully increased RAM.

  2. I would purchase Dual Channel DDR2 800 2x2GB. They come in kits. from $60 to $99/w Rebate.

This leaves the other slots open for more memory later on.

Good idea. There are only 2 compatible 2GB modules in the Asus list of this board (Kingston KHX6400D2K2/2G and ELPIDA EBE21EE8ABFA-8E-E). Don't know what these SS/DS or Channel A/B/C means but I will try to get two of these.

    Thanks

  3. When you ran out of memory, was it because there was not enough RAM to load the UPnP server into memory, or was it that the server ran out of memory eventually after it allocated memory it did not free? (possible memory leak)

The UPnP server started just fine. After I declared all media folders the server started to eat up all memory. So I stopped that experiment and waited for more memory to be supported.

    Thanks

    Harald

  4. The board supports Dual-channel DDR2 800/667/533.

I would get as high quality with the highest speed possible.

If you can afford, go to 4GB.

    Thanks for this information. So for 4GB I would buy 4* Dual-channel DDR2 800 1GB, right?

    Thanks a lot.

  5. Hi,

I'm no hardware guy so please excuse my question. I own a Lime-Tech MD1500 with the ASUS P5B-VM DO board. I would like to put the RAM on this board to the max. What type of RAM do I need to buy and what size is possible?

    Many thanks in advance.

  6. When you access the share Foo, it will include the files under Foo on all disks, regardless of included/excluded disks setting.

The included disks/excluded disks settings for a share only serve to define the set of disks that a new object (file or directory) can possibly be created on at the time of creation.

Ok, I see. Seems that I missed a thing. I named a folder the same on a disk, that was not included in a share, as a share itself. At that point the folder content of the not included disk became part of the share and the disk became included. So I moved my files from the share to the share. The first error of mc told me that the files are in use. I deleted again and both, the source and the target, were gone.

Very complicated. I did expect that the included disk field is the border around my share. At least the label "Included disks" implies that.

So everybody should be warned. Never ever name a folder the same as a share - even if the disk is not included.

    Regards

    Harald

  7. Can't reproduce this behavior, though didn't use MC.

Just a question before I  post everything:

I create a share named "Foo" with included disks "disk1-14". Now I create a folder named "Foo" on disk15. What is the expected behaviour? My guess is: It's included in the Share and the included disk definition is overwritten. Can this happen?

    Thanks

    Harald

  8. Hi,

I'm the guy who attached a drive to the eSATA port in a pre-build machine giving 16 drives (14 internal array, 1 external array, 1 parity) in total. This didn't work until 4.3.2. Now it's fixed.

I do have a share "Projects" defined as disk1-14. The new 16th drive (the eSATA one) was cleared, formatted and attached to the array as disk15. With mc I moved files and folders from the "Projects" share to the new 15th drive (disk15). Note: This drive is not part of the Share.

I received an error that the folders/files couldn't be deleted. I did it again and afterwards the folders and files (worth around 40GB) were gone.

It seems that the new drive is part of the Share even if it is not included.

    Perhaps a loop/count error?

If you need some more information please let me know.

    Thanks.

    Harald

*EDIT*: I copied some files to disk15 and they appear in the Share that is defined as disk1-14. Definetely an error.

  9. IN MY OPINION, using torrents as the primary means of distributing commercial software is not a good idea for 2 reasons, (1) many users just won't go to the trouble (and potentially security exposure) to install the client; and (2) it may negatively affect the perception of the product.

Full ACK. If I'm forced to use this kind of technology I would stop with the current release of unRAID. I'm waiting for a fix in 4.3.2 as well, but I would drop my requirement to add a 15th data drive at the eSATA port then. I can use this extra 1TB drive for something else then.

I try to keep that little control of where I download things and what I download. If I can't download a commercial product from the website of the company behind the product I don't trust them. This is one of my little, call them paranoid, rules. In now over 29 years in IT I never had a virus or something like that (and I don't use VMs to be save). Call me stupid, but I will not change my way to use the internet (formerly Compuserve, formerly BBS, ... you get the idea).

Yesterday I paid for my 1-year UltraEdit update. Why not pay for my 1-year unRAID update. In my opinion paying people for their great work is an absolute requirement.

@NLS: I don't want to get into detail - but your mail to me wasn't that friendly. There are in fact several differences between mail (I only accept text mails, BASTA), CDs and open ports on my wire-based (no WLAN) router. I hope you know them - at least I think so ;-)

    Sorry

    Harald

  10. Just download utorrent - the rest is easy. I currently have a seedbox and would be happy to seed for a while. Where is the .torrent file?

Tried it. Software says I have to open a port and redirect it to my computer. No, never! Sorry to say that, but this way of software download is not applicable for me.

    Regards

    Harald

  11. How many are willing to use a torrent? I posted a lilnk to the command line ctorrent program the other day.

Has anyone downloaded or tried it out?

Interesting thread. I'm using many protocols but torrent was never a descision for me. In fact I don't know what it is.

Just to put my 0.02 in: I have no idea how to use a "torrent" (do you call it that way?) Please give my HTTP or FTP download.

    Thanks

    Harald

  12. Hi,

check if SMART is enabled with this command:

    /boot/smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sdx

Issue the following command for the drives with SMART disabled:

    /boot/smartctl -a -d ata -s on /dev/sdx

In case you don't have smartctl on your machine you can download that tool in the download area. That worked for my Samsungs. You need to replace sdx with the appropriate device identifier.

    Regards

    Harald

  13. Harald,

Not to Hi-Jack this post, I was wondering are you seeing feedback from your Samsung drives and if so which model # driver are you using. I had purchased a Samsung in Lieu of a WD as the were quite a but cheaper on sale here a while back, A local company bought quite a few -- anyhow I could not get any feedback from the drive 735jb comes to mind as the model but not certain. Are they Quiet? The drives you have installed?

    Thanks,

    Dave

I love these Samsungs. They are quiet, stay cool, are fast and cheap. SMART was disabled for some but smartctl could enable it - no problem. After nearly 4 months with high read/write rates there's just one with 849 sector remapped. The other drives report 1 or 2 sectors - if any. None of the drives reports an error.

I started my array with Samsungs and swiitched to WD because of the low power consumtion. After one month or so I calculated the difference in price and power consumtion and now I'm back to the Samsungs ;-)

    Regards

    Harald

  14. Thanks for all your posts.

As you could see in my "Need help" thread in the 4.2 board I'm mostly using 750GB Samsungs. In addition there's a 750GB WD and a 1TB WD. Parity is a 1TB Samsung. The Samsungs are much faster than the WDs (and cooler). The calculated finish time dropped by several hours once the check reached the 750GB barrier.

Sorry folks - I'm just a little bit nervous since my eSATA experience. I didn't expect to see so many red dots in the last several days ;-)

    Regards

    Harald

  15. Hi,

I think I've found a bug but I would like to verify it first.

Yesterday I started a parity check. unRAID calculated 1184 minutes and started the check. I didn't do anything with the machine and let it go.

10 minutes ago I had to read something from the array (no writes, definitely). When I looked at the main page the positions and estimated end time jumped significant from 584.xxx.xxx to 866.xxx.xxx (current position) and  321 to 39 (estimated finish).

Such a huge jump doesn't look good to me. Is it possible that Parity check takes the last read position (from my read - not the parity read) and go's on from that position?

    Regards

    Harald

  16. Hi,

    thanks for your answer:

If it were me, I'd try this ...

With the array stopped and the new drive in place, go to the devices page and unassign disk3.  Then go back to main (slot 3 should be empty).  (Do not start the array!)  Then go back to the devices page and reassign disk3 to the same drive.  Then go back to main.  Hopefully disk3 will be green.  I am hoping doing this unassign and reassign will make unRAID realize that the disk assigned to slot 3 is the right one.  That seems to be the problem.  My guess is that when you added the final disk, the BIOS scrambled the drive assignments and confused unRAID.

After unassigning the drive 3 (the red one) unRAID reported a missing drive. After that I re-assigned the drive and unRAID showed the same picture as shown in this thread (drive 3 red, new drive blue). It didn't help.

Another try: Un-assigned the new drive. This one was really weired. The existing drive 3 went blue and unRAID offered an "upgrading disk". I went to the Lime-Tower and did a hard shutdown. After reboot everything was green again. So I started a parity check to be on the save side - it's running yet.

Currently it looks to me as if the MD1500 tower from Lime can't add the drive at the eSATA port to the array if all internal drives are in use.

I'm in contact with Lime - perhaps they do find a solution.

    Thanks

    Harald

  17. Harald,

One more request... to give Tom some more clues as to what is happening, before you press the "Restore" button, can you at a telnet prompt type

    /root/mdcmd status >/boot/mdcmd.txt

Then zip it up and attach it to this thread.  It is how the internals of unRAID see your current configuration.

    Joe L.

It took some time to come back again but after these error messages I first started to save all my important data. This bug made me real nervous. Here we go:

Attached you'll find a fresh sample of images and data that I took just a minute ago. I stopped my array, attached a new drive to the esata port of my Lime machine and restartet. The new drive is the last one in the list. As you can see my drives are scrambled and at one position two drives are shown. In the zip is the syslog and the mdcmd output you asked for.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Harald

  18. RobJ & Joe L.,

many thanks for your support. Because of the last two articles in my thread I fear to do what you wrote. If there's a loop error and an array (w/o parity) might only recognize 14 drives instead of 15 the Restore button wouldn't help me. If this is the case I will end up with a possible missing drive in parity that contains real data.

Should I call Restore or not - I'm not really sure if both of you have different meaning about this ...

@JoeL: Copying syslog was the last step I did after the last re-boot (with the new drive attached). So this is the syslog that must contain the error.

I note that md3 is sdq, the very last drive identified, and also the very first drive in the Device Inventory, of all hard drives.  Also, this is md15 that is being added, the very last possible unRAID array data drive, and the 16th disk in the Device Inventory.  Since the syslog shows no apparent reason for calling md3 wrong, and the 2 drives are at the beginning or end of 3 different lists, I suspect that a loop test is off by one.

A side note, this is a perfect example of a hardware change that modifies all of the other device ID's.  The new drive, added as Disk 15, has been assigned sda, which has probably shifted every single device ID.

    I'll bet you are right...

    Robj,

You might drop Tom a PM with a link to this thread, describing your suspicions.  The syslog really helps.. Tom can probably address the issue quickly.  In the interim, the "Restore" button will throw away the old disk configuration and rebuild parity and should get hawihoney back running again.

    Joe L.

It would help me a lot if the author of unRAID would explain his meaning ;-)

    Regards

    Harald

  19. Hi,

thanks for your help so far. I just collected additional info:

1.) Shutdown system - the new drive is not attached to the eSATA port.

    2.) Upgraded to 4.3.beta-6.

    3.) Restart everything's green.

4.) Shutdown again - reattach the new drive to the back port of the machine.

5.) After reboot I see the screen in the first attached picture. You will notice that this time a different existing drive went red. In my first post of this thread you will find a picture that looks similar but a different drive went red. Yes, the blue one is the new drive.

6.) Shutdown from console, remove new drive, restart and everything is back green again.

I will attach the syslog to this post.

    Many thanks in advance

    Harald

  20. Hi,

    thanks for your answers.

1.) Yes, the last drive was the one I added.

2.) After removing the drive and restarting the machine - everything was back again and green.

3.) Re-attaching the drive and looking at the BIOS scrolling I recognized the new drive printed in red in the JMicron list. I do not understand why the drive is marked red but recognized by unRAID. Hmm, as I removed the drive again I think I need to reboot again to catch the logs.

4.) Yes, the attached picture was to big. I was shaking after the red dot and I couldn't install my favorite ImageTool - it was stored on the failing unRAID array 8-(

    Thanks.

    Harald

  21. Hi,

I just added another drive to my MD1500. I used the eSata port at the back of the machine.

After adding the drive on the devices page the GUI cvame up with this error. Some restarts later nothing changed.

    Need help immediate.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Harald

  22. Basically the Subject says it all. I am trying to find a better program than Windows Explorer for large(1GB+) file transfers. I have found that Win Explorer to be less than reliable and when I queue up a big transfer I don't want to babysit it. I downloaded xplorer2, but I haven't got a chance to test it yet. Any other suggestions or two bits?

    I use Total Commander.
