  1. both 6 tb drives pre-cleared fine one took 63.43 hours the other 62.51 hours Setup unraid to start rebuilding parity with the new 6tb drive. currently reading at about 100mb/s estimated time 1000 mins. It will of course go much faster when it hits over 4tb since 4tb is the largest non parity drive currently in my 10 disk raid. When i took a second look the controller bios is showing 1.9tb for the 2 tb drives 2.09tb for the 4 tb and 6 tb. So the 4tb have been working fine for a long time so all is well. Just as you all said its just a bug in the way it is displaying the size in the bios. Works fine in unraid. since i am running the server headless i never really noticed what it was displaying the 4tb drive as. I assumed it was correct up to now. in unraid under device status in the main webpage the size of the drive is coming up as 5860522532. If someone gets a wd 6tb (non red) or a seagate 6tb i would be interested to know the size it comes up as since this will effect which drive has to be parity (for future possible purchases). merlyn
  2. I was in a hurry to get the pre-clear started and really didn't investigate further. All i know is when i ran the preclear it recognized the correct 6tb size. I won't know if unraid will show 6tb since i never tried to add it yet to the array. Once the preclear is done i can reboot and check into it further. I assume i have a old BIOS (newest is 2011) who knows what version i am running. cannot stop the array since it currently has family members using the array. can you even try to add a drive as it is being precleared just to see what size it is in unraid . I would say you probably could but i really dont know motherboard is a supermicro based X7DBE-X i have 3 SAT2-MV8 Raid cards who knows what bios they are running cannot check while the preclear is still running. I am sure not going to abort a preclear 47.5 hours in to finishing just to check what raid bios version i am running. more info tomorrow when the preclear is done. its currently at the last step and 3.5 tb into pre-reading (58 percent) I am assuming all is well until it is proven not .
  3. There is no technical reason that drives up to 16TiB (max size of an RFS formatted drive) should not work in unRAID. But until they are tried we won't know for sure. Controllers sometimes have firmware bugs. I had issues with a 5T Seagate (pulled from an external) that I think were a deliberate attempt to stop users from pulled drives from USB enclosures. Users have gotten 5TiB drives working, I have not heard of anyone running with 6TiB yet. But again, in theory, they should work. For anyone worried about the 16 TiB limit of RFS, this limitation will soon be lifted as unRAID will support XFS and BTRFS. These drives can be as large as 16 EiB (more than a million times larger than RFS). Imagine how long a parity check would take with an array of those puppies. 45 hours into preclearing two - 6 tb WD reds. I am preclearing them both simultaneously. currently 52 percent complete on step 10. I will know if they both preclear ok by tomorrow... Then another day or so to set one up as parity. Then will pull oldest, smallest capacity drive and rebuild that drive with old parity drive after preclearing that. Will take like a week for the whole filter down process. Will tell you how it goes from there. I did notice that my bios recognized it as a 2 tb drive but unraid recognised it as a 6tb. Most Interesting my 4tb drives show up as 4tb drives in bios. Silly BIOS. my setup Tamsolutions 4u rackmount supermicro servers that the forums here were raving about oh so many months ago. I picked up the intel variant. running unRAID Server Pro version: 5.0.5 merlyn
  4. You can call it false or whatever, but let me ask you something. My laptop, (nlite XP Pro SP3), which I use 12 hours a day, hasn't rebooted since October 2012. (I put it in S3-sleep occasionally). What is your uptime? If you have honestly not rebooted since october 2012 you no longer have to be careful. There is a very high percentage chance you already have malware and/or a virus on you system as we speak. How do i know this ? Simple you did not install any windows updates that required a reboot (which is damn near all of them). Any webpage, email, jpg, pdf, infected usb device hell damn near anything can infect your machine instantly without you having a clue. Your heart is in the right place but your priorities are a bit messed up. I would tell you to reboot but windows xp will probably blue screen and not start up again if it really has been that long. No laptop running windows xp can go to sleep that often without a occasional reboot to fix all kinds of OS issues building up. i dare say there is a zero percent chance a xp machine will run that long with a 12 hour a day use and it going to sleep everyday. merlyn

  6. Ok I have been using pro 4.3 beta 6 since it came out. Everything is working great except user shares. I just cannot get it set up the way I want it. For example I have DVD rips on the unraid server. My wife has DVD rips also but she has not reason to see my DVD's but i will sometimes need to see hers. There are people visiting that will be on my network that I would like to give access to only some files and not see the entire unraid directory. I dont want people to see folders names that they do not have access to. etc etc .... Yeah I know I could possibly make it work but I am at the point that setting up a windows server may just be easier. So before I even get started is what i want to do possible. My unraid server has a second nic (abit ab9) so I would like to hook a crossover cable to a dedicated windows server (2nd nic) and setup user persmissions the way I want. This way anyone who want to access anything on the unraid server has to go thru the windows server. Am I on the right track? Will this work with a unraid server? I assume I could just turn user shares off and set it all up thru windows server And no I have no idea how to do this but I am willing to figure it all out. Thoughts? I cannot be the only one who wants more control out of their unraid user settings. Merlyn
  7. Just do the BIOS update. You will not regret it. 1 month ago i did the same as you and tried to get the newest beta version to boot and it would not at all with the factory shipped bios.. Messed with it for a week. Finally did the bios update and it booted immediately.
  8. josetann you are right on all counts. The third connector i was talking about was the molex connector. I was hoping when he checked out the board looking for the power connectors that he might notice something else wrong. Since he is locking up at code 25 i was recommending it to be plugged in (it is on mine with a cheap pci express card). hell try it plugged in and not plugged in I also always remove the battery and power cable when i do a cmos reset. Its kind of a pain but it is sure to work. we still have plenty to check .... power supply (as you said) and improperly seated cpu heatsink can cause random reboots and no beep or ALOT of beeping if it is working enough to overheat. It always seems to be the last thing i check that is causing the problem. merlyn
  9. yup check the easy stuff first and try booting without a keyboard or mouse also. and of course try switching them. if the video card is pci try the other pci slot memory try one stick and try all 4 slots with that stick. make sure the hard drive cable is not hooked to the motherboard for now ... Check your power plugs ... going to the mother board got all 3 plugged in? that should get you booted up (at least one of the above should) you mentioned the dual boot problem .... yeah mine did that too ... was kinda weird ... seems like it went away when i flashed the bios to the newest for the board. If you get it working i STRONGLY recommend flashing the bios to the newest version. The board would lock during the boot up using the newest 4.3 beta 6 when i tried with the factory sent bios. Once i did the flash beta 6 worked with no problems. Hope this helps ... merlyn
  10. code 25 says it got to the video stage of the boot up process before stopping. Yeah I got that error code on my brand new ab9 pro also. after doing just as much swapping out as you did i found in my haste to set it up i had switched the mouse and keyboard and plugged them into the wrong ps/2 ports. As soon as i switched them to the correct ports the computer booted up fine. if you are not getting even a beep noise when you boot it is probably something plugged into the board incorrectly ... ide sata ps2 ... usb etc .... try unplugging EVERYTHING and see if it will boot without anything but the most basic plugged in ... then just plug things back in one at a time till you figure out what is causing it not to boot. i would say there is about a 90 percent chance your board is fine. merlyn
