  1. I would like to know the convenience of letting a VM always on. I usually do esporadic work with this home VM from work, and I would'n like to see an increment of my electricity bill. Can someone give some advice? Is minimum the power consumption of a VM at idle and it has no sense to shut it down? Must I activate/deactivate sleep? will I loose connection from outside? Thankyou Gus
  2. I'm also interested in this post. Is supposed that the VM must be shutdown? can I have it always on? In the case is always on, must the S.O go to sleep? (In the tutorial of installing W10 I follow by jonp sleep was deactivated) What about power consumption of a VM at idle? Thankyou Gus
  3. Can someone answer this two questions? If I'm not gonna use local backups, can I simply delete the Backup share CrashPlan has created in my system? I don't like to have shares I don't use. Where aro those manuals? Are you referring to the CP site or are there any other? https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/4 Thankyou Gus
  4. Can you explain a little more about that? Why I can't connect as root? Must I create another user? In your telnet code you connect as root, don't you? Thankyou, excellent answer post !!!
  5. I was thinking what will be the best way to connect my sata drives to the motherboard in the case it does matter. My mobo has: 6x SATA3 (6Gbps) ports via PCH 2x SATA3 (6Gbps) ports via ASM1061 What will be the best way to connect data disks (4u) , cache disk (1u) and parity disk (1u, next unraid release 2u) ? What happen if a disk in swapped from it's connector with another disk? Thankyou Gus
  6. @itimpi Finally solved under vmware !!! Up and running. Thankyou for your support/effort to help me !!! Gus
  7. I have been able to boot and connect to unraid from virtualbox using this tutorial: http://www.howtogeek.com/187721/how-to-boot-from-a-usb-drive-in-virtualbox/ but it doesn't pass a FLASH GUID and it's useless. I have VMWare to give it a try. Can you explain the basic to get it working please? Thankyou Gus
  8. I have entered my BIOS and select the USB as first booting device. Reboot and test that unraid works perfect. I have connected from my phone to unraid config page. Rebooted and F12 to select booting device, select HD and booted. The same problem under Virtualbox, UNRAID not found. I will try if I can virtualize UNRAID under another program. Thanyou Gus
  9. Yes it shows under windows explorer. Will try it now. No, it hasn't my license. I'm trying with the default free installation. Thankyou Gus
  10. When you do the initial setup of unraid VM machine, you can't select the USB properties. Once finished in the new windows that appears with all the settings of this virtual machine you can clic under USB and add, in my case, a Kingston DataTraveller USB. (Before I was not doing that, I was seleccting a blank template). But like before... waiting for /dev/disk/by_label/UNRAID and /dev/disk/by_label/UNRAID not found ! I have tried the 3 types of USB with no luck. I don't know what else to try :-( Thankyou Gus
  11. Yes sorry. added step 4.5 where I rename back to UNRAID my USB Stick. Wait, wait, how do you assign it to VM? I simply create a new blank usb filter... must I do anything else? Thankyou Gus
  12. Good morning @itimpi let's see what I made wrong ;-) df ls /dev/?d? fdisk -l /dev/?d? Did you also make sure it was labelled as "UNRAID"? That is important for unRAID to pick it up. You also do NOT want the boot vmdk device to have the label UNRAID as it might confuse things. This is how I made it: 1 - Format USB memory with 2Tware Fat32Format 1.13 default values (windows didn't allow me to format a 64gb memory stick). After that tried with a 8GB memory stick but also formated with this program. 2 - Copied UNRAID 6.1.9 contents to that device (files and folders) and labeled UNRAID. Executed make_bootable.bat as admin, a dos window is open and press key to continue... syslinux.exe -maf F:... Completed (if you don't name it UNRAID make_bootable doesn't work) 3 - Renamed USB memory stick to UNHDD before making image. 4 - Open Winimage 9 as admin. Select Disk / Use removable disk F: . Select Creating Virtual Hard Disk image from physical disk... Select disk, hit ok and named UNHDD.vhd - Wait 10 min 4.5 - Renamed USB memory stick back to UNRAID 5- Virtualbox: 5.1: New 5.2: Name: UNRAID_6.1.9 Type: Linux Version: Other Linux (64bits) 5.3: Memory size: 2048 5.4: Hard disk: Use an existing virtual hard disk file / select UHDD.vhd (storage is on IDE Primary Master, tried SATA also) 5.5: Network: Bridged adaptor (Intel® 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection) (I suppose is my "real" ethernet adapter) Advanced: Adapter Type: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM) Promiscuous Mode: Deny Mac Address: xxxxxxxxxxxx Cable Connected: Yes 5.6: USB: Enable USB Controller: Yes USB 1.1 (OHCI) Controller Add new USB filter with all fields initially set to empty strings Start machine, blue screen with unraid options, load unraid, begin loading... but: Now I have realized that there's an error and it doesn't find UNRAID: I tought those 30sec was the time searching for USB stick after started loading from HD USB image. Does this give you any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thankyou Gus
  13. Yes. Can you tell me what settings you have under VirtualBox \ File \ Preferences \ Network \ Host-only Networks\ VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter ? (My linux is null) I can do a ls /boot and get /config Formated to FAT32 before copying files to it. Thankyou Gus
  14. No luck also with 6.2. Starting unraid in GUI mode, enter user "root" with no password and a blank "unable to connect" mozilla firefox browser pointing "localhost" . Gus
  15. On the HOST machine I have a 192.168.1.100 FIXED IP. No idea where this 192.168.1.101 is? (I have rebooted a couple of times ;-) Btw I'm trying 6.2 GUI right now... let's see !!! Thankyou Gus
  16. thankyou @itimpi for answer. At the moment I have only defined de IDE disk needed to install unraid in conjuntion with the usb. I will add the sata disks after. I'm trying 6.1.9. I'll try 6.2 GUI later. What I don't really understand is in the last screen capture when I ping from Host to unraid (192.168.1.12) I got a 192.168.1.101 destination host not reachable What is this 192.168.1.101 if I'm pinging 192.168.1.12? Thankyou Gus
  17. I know this thread is old but I think better to maintain here than starting a new thread. I want to test UNRAID 6.1.9 (dockers, etc) on virtualbox (under windows) before applying to my "new" server. I'm also a new user and a little lost with so many new linux terms. I have setup a new virtualbox machine like this: I cant fire it up I can ping internet (google) And also I can ping HOST computer But I'm unable to access unraid through //tower nor 192.168.1.12 That's what I got when I ping unraid Can someone imagine what the problem is? Is there another way to test unraid under windows? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou Gus

    Access VM

Thankyou @itimpi and @BobPhoenix for this great support. Al configured and running. Finally opted for "Microsoft Remote Desktop" under Mac OS with great performance. Had to enter a static IP to see some of the other computers/shares on the net and unraid. Once done working like a charm. Now I have to find a way to connect to this vm from outside. Tomorrow will try "Microsoft Remote Desktop" from work to see if works and what is the performance. Is enough "Microsoft Remote Desktop" or is a better solution like logmein or similar? Thankyou

    Access VM

But then this is not an exact science? and the port can vary? (Unraid showing VNC Port 5900 and the vnc client unraid use to connect to this machine 5700) Only are used 2 ports (5700/5900) ? or can be a lot more? Is it possible to access this vm from another location using vnc/rcp? If yes, then I have to map this port on my router to point to unraid machine (192.168.1.35) but if this port changes I have to open a wide series of ports and thats not the better option. Is there another/better option to access this vm from outside? better if it is encrypted. I know there are a lot of questions but I'm new to unraid and trust me I have been reading a lot this past month... and unraid is not as easy !!! too many options/features !!! Thankyou
  20. Following Jon's videotutorial I have setup a Win10VM. The machine is up and running with no problem. But now I want to connect to this vm and I'm unable. On unraid VMs I have: Windows 10 - CPUs (2) - Memory (4096) - Hard Drives (1/50.00GB) - VNC Port (5900) If I press on this Windows 10 icon on VMs : VNC Remote I get a new window (the same I used to install windows) where I have: HOST: 192.168.1.35 (The static IP unraid has) PORT: 5700 (Why 5700 if on the properties I see port 5900?) PASSWORD: I think I left the password blank when configuring the new vm. Is it possible that this is the problem? Can I add now a password? *** SOLVED *** Stop vm and add password. I have also tried with "TightVNC with no luck also. But with another program (Terminals 3.6.1) on RDP port 3389, my windows user and password I can get access. What is the difference between VNC and RDP? Why I can't connect with VNC? What 's the way to connect to this VM from internet? Thankyou Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  21. Bassically I know what is IPMI but I think I have a mess of concepts. I'm new to this whole new world of servers (I have a synology) I have finally opted for a Supermicro X10SAE that hasn't ipmi and a Xeon E3 1246 v3 I will not have direct access to the server, imagine is in a closet, I can go there but will not be the principal computer. As you can see I have a lot of question !!! Any help will be greatly apreciated. Thankyou Gus
  22. For what I understood x10sae has ipmi then I don't need to hook any monitor for basic setup, It has some kind of graphic adaptor. Gus
  23. Only one last question. Finally opted for a nomal (not L) version of the processor, but must I take the version with integrated gpu? I know that for now is not supported but the difference is 16€. Perhaps in the future... Or better go for the version without GPU (compatibility problems with unraid) ? E3-1241 v3 - 318€ E3-1246 v3 - 334€ (with Intel HD Graphics P4600) Thankyou Gus
