  1. Yeah.. I liked the utgard too... I just pulled the trigger on one! (and a Norco 5 in 3 cage from 3btech!) Now I just need the 3TB drives to go on sale again and I can upgrade! Jim
  2. Newegg Shell shocker which starts at 1:00PM - 2:59PM PT forRosewill CRUISER Black Gaming ATX . This has what appears to be enough external slots for 3x 5 in 3 cages.. If it has free ship, I probably will pull the trigger. I was thinking about the utgard case but it has $15 shipping.. but a $10 rebate for a total cost of $55 AR.. hmm... decisions...
  3. Can the 900 take 3x 5 in 3 cages? The description say only 3 external 5.25 bays.. but the picture looks like the internal cages can be removed...
  4. The 4020 uses regular SATA backplanes, so a reverse breakout cable would be useless. In a 4220 or 4224 it would be right at home. D'oh! I knew that.. It just slipped my mind! The question is will I ever get a 4220 or 4224! Jim
  5. I believe those are long gone. There is no box to buy them...
  6. Ok.. Well now I know!.. You saved me the trouble of trying to ohm out the cable to figure that out! Thanks! On the bright side... I now have a reverse breakout cable if I ever buy the 4020 Norco box! EDIT: I had already bought a longer than needed (forward) breakout cable earlier today when this cable didn't work. So Hopefully there won't be any gotchas with the longer right angle min-SAS connector.
  7. oops.. That's right! I forgot I went past the link to get the breakout cable!
  8. My guess is that's the issue. someone else on the forums here couldn't get an answer from them. I also just e-mailed them. I can't find a pinout for the forward cable! If I have that I could ohm out the cable to see if it's forward or reverse.
  9. Did you get this cable to work? I bought this and mine doesn't. I'm wondering if it's a reverse breakout cable! Someone else on on these boards had issues too.. I have nothing to compare it against so I don't know. It's a new SASLP card and a new cable.
  10. I bought this cable from cable matters. I also just got the SASLP MV8 recntly. I just tried the combo in a test system and the bios doesn't see any drive connected. UnRaid reports the same. Do I have the correct cable? Or do I have to do anything with the SASLP card? the SASLP *seems* to be working fine since the bios is showing up and I can enter the utility.. It just doesn't see any drives. Someone else PM'ed me with the same situation. Am I missing something? Thanks, Jim
  11. Hoarding has started! (or being prepared.. ) I had to pay tax though! Jim
  12. Will an SSD really help a cache drive? Aren't we still limited by the Gige network connection?? Maybe multiple simultaneous writes?? Jim
  13. Oohh.. I might get one for use as a spare?? Is that how hoarding begins??
  14. I'm currently running V4.5.4 It's been a while since I've been on the forums and I see there is a 5 beta 10! Is there any reason why I couldn't/shouldn't upgrade to the latest beta? And can I go from 4.5.4 directly to 5 (beta 10)? I realize that I need at least beta 7 for 3TB support (which I don't have any right now but plan on in the very near future) Thanks, Jim
  15. No issues with dust with the Helios 910? All the air intakes easily cleaned? The Utgard has a removable filter by the PS which the 910 doesn't seem to... It looks like I can get the 910 for $59 AR FS. from amazon which makes it slightly cheaper if I really want to wait for the rebate!
  16. I really should just go with the Tower and a couple of 5 in 3 cages to start. I like the looks of the utgard case. but the helios looks good too! And at ~$50 ($65 w/shipping) not a bad deal if it's quiet enough. Now I can get the Norco 5 in 3's for about $88 but I need two of them (to start).. So $65 + 2x $88 = $241. But for $60 more I can get the 4020 case! grrr.. I hate these decisions!
  17. Raj, I think you've had some experience with the Utgard and I believe you've used the Helios cases. I'm trying to decide between the two... Any thoughts?
  18. But is it a good price for that massive piece of crap? I've glanced through the thread above.. I'm not decided on that vs supermicro.. or just the norco case.. but that's another thread
  19. 10-12 in the next year or two... In the past I've been upgrading my server by replacing smaller drives with bigger ones. But now my smallest drive is 1TB. the rest are 1.5T and 2T's. so I don't think I'll be upsizing the 1.5's and 2's anytime soon. The 1T I'll probably replace as I believe that's my last non green drive. So.. I'll probably have to add disks in lieu of upsizing. I imagine I'll upgrade the parity to a 3TB when I replace the 1TB. Jim
  20. I'm running out of room in my server and I need to think about upgrading my case. I currently have 8 drives in my antec sonata with 4 of them in a 4 in 3 coolmaster cage. I want/need to add more drives! I'm toying with the idea of getting a Norco 20 or 24 drive box. I'm also looking into getting a regular tower with several 5 in 3 cages. It almost seems like the Norco could be cheaper after I calculate the cost of the 5 in 3 cages which seem to be about $100+ each! Why wouldn't I just get the Norco? Norco: Pros: Cost Cons: Size? Noise? Tower: Pros: Quieter Incrementally up-gradable? Smaller Cons: Cost. Right now the server sits in the basement. I do watch TV in the basement occasionally. Some day it will have it's own tiny closet I can't see myself needing 20 or 24 drives in the near future! 10-12 seems more likely.. Thanks for your opinions... Jim
  21. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817994028 Free shipping after rebate. Rebate good through 8/31 Is this a good deal? Are the ICY docks what everyone is using?
  22. It's actually $110 after the mail in rebate... That might be attractive enough to pull the trigger..
  23. I think they are still $80 (79.99)... But the 3TB might be an idea.. Maybe I'll replace my parity drive to free up a 2TB... hmm... does my MB support the 3T drives... hmm...
  24. Bummer I missed this! I saw it earlier and didn't have a controller for it! I just bought a SASLP today and was going to get a drive (or two) and now the rebate expired... oh well I'll have to wait for the next deal!
