  1. Trurl, you're a genius. Yes I can see, for instance, DISK_ASSIGNMENTS.txt -- I'll bet that's useful, huh? It's weird that both Unraid and Window says the flash drive is bad, but I seem to be able to read it. I won't complain -- I'll just copy the data I need.
  2. Yup, thank you -- I'm reading that now.
  3. Yes, it would appear that I have successfully replaced the key. I got a new email with a new URL, which I copied and pasted into Tower, and it appears to be happy (no red errors in the upper right corner)
  4. Thanks again, trurl. I should have checked my old emails first (in my defense, I didn't even remember what I was looking for). Now to see if the various readme's can help me with my disk assignments, etc.
  5. Thank you for the quick response, trurl. I've found the five year old email with the order confirmation, but that doesn't contain the key. I also seem to be able to access the "dead" USB drive, and I see a file in /config named Basic.key. Honestly, I don't even remember what I'm looking for. A URL? A SHA256 key? Yes, I have the key!
  6. I'm not sure how badly I've screwed up, but my USB stick apparently died (w/o backup, of course). I've purchased a new USB stick, installed Unraid, pluged it in to my server, and rebooted. But rather than going to Tools -> Registration and hitting Replace Key, I clicked on Trial. Now I don't have a "replace key" option, and I don't know how to proceed. Do I need to buy a new USB stick and start over? I'll probably have other questions after I get past this, but the first thing I need to do is to get my key onto that flash drive.
  7. Thank you, Squid. I don't understand why, but the reboot fixed the problem.
  8. I'm unable to update from 6.8.3 to 6.9.2 via the GUI. I consistently get What's the problem here, and how can I fix it? I'm not sure if this is the proper forum or thread; kindly direct me if I should post this elsewhere.
  9. What a great idea! That worked perfectly, so I thank you for the advice. I still don't understand why 'DESKTOP-AR3CLUV' stops working, but as long as I have this workaround, that's all I need.
  10. I have created a Windows 10 VM on my unraid server. It all seems to be working satisfactorily, with one exception: When I first boot the VM, I have no trouble connecting to in from a Windows 10 host on my network. However, once my host goes to sleep/hibernate or once it restarts, I can no longer connect to the VM. The error message is I can still connect to the VM with VNC, so I know that it is still running. But the only way I have found to reconnect with RDP is to restart the VM. I am hoping that somebody out there can help me figure out how to get RDP to reliably connect to my VM.
  11. Thanks, Squid -- checking that out now.
  12. I have a share named "Private". It's set to "Export: Yes (hidden)" with "Security: Private". I have set up a user with Read/Write access to this share. When I try to mount the share in Windows I always get "\\Tower\Private is not accessible..." after providing my user name and password. If I change the Security from "Private" to "Secure" I can then mount the share, but that's not what I need; I need the full Read/Write access. Just for fun, I created a new user account and gave that user full access to the share, but Windows is no happier with that user than the original user. I have no trouble accessing other shares which are set to "Public". I'm looking for ideas on what I'm missing or how I can go about debugging this. Update: I just tried logging into Tower as my user, rather than "root". I got an error message saying "Your connection to this site is not private". Is this a clue (and if it is, what does it mean)?
  13. Thanks, Ashman. I've been to the Plex forums. I've posted in three different threads (two as follow-ups and one starting a new thread). I see other people having this problem, but I've not seen any response from Plex.
  14. I'm not sure what the correct forum should be for the following questions, but if I have erred in posting this here, please tell me which forum I should use. This is not an unRAID problem (or at least I don't think it is), but I am using Plex with unRAID, so that's why I'm reaching out to the unRAID community. I am having problems with Plex and as near as I can tell, they have no tech support -- or at least I've not found a way to get them to answer my questions. Specifically, I can't get Plex to play videos shot in portrait mode correctly. They are always either rotated and/or the aspect ratio is completely fubar. On my Android phone, I got around this by displaying my videos with VLC rather than the Plex internal viewer. I just bought a Smart TV for the express purpose of watching these videos, but once again, the videos are all either rotated or otherwise completely messed up. I know that there are alternatives to Plex, such as Emby, but Emby isn't supported on my TV (and I don't know if it would work any better anyway). I'm wondering what my other alternatives might be. Perhaps with a Roku connected to the TV, I might have better luck with that version of the Plex app, or I might be able to use Emby with the Roku? Has anybody experienced and overcome problems like I'm describing? Edit: Oh, one more thing I haven't tried. I know that I can boot unRAID into the GUI. Is this GUI as full-featured as connecting with a browser? Specifically, would I be able to launch the Plex WebGUI from the console GUI? In a few days I'll have a new video card with HDMI output (which I can then connect to my new TV) and I'll be able to answer that question for myself, but if anybody can answer me before then, please do.
  15. A follow-up question about the parity disk, if I may: The parity disk has to be at least as large as the largest non-parity disk. If I were to buy, just as a for instance, one or two 2TB drives, my 4TB drive would have to become the parity disk. How hard would it be to migrate the data to the 2TB drive(s)? Until I have some real-life data, I have no clue have quickly I will be filling up a disk, so it's hard to know if I would try to save money by buying smaller disks or if I would quickly realize that I need to just keep adding on additional 4TB disks.
  16. Thank you tdallen and TinkerToyTech for your prompt, helpful, replies!
  17. I've only learned about unRaid this past weekend, and I've been trying to read up and figure out if this will do everything I want. I have just a couple of requirements, but a somewhat longer list of "it would be nice if..." My primary requirement is a platform for backing up Windows 10 PCs. I'm pretty certain that unRaid will handle this flawlessly, although I'm not sure if there if I would need to purchase 3rd party s/w to do this or if Windows has the necessary tools. Ideally I would want support for both full and incremental backups, I guess (I honestly haven't completely thought through my backup strategy -- for far too long my backup strategy has been "I should get around to that some day"). My secondary requirement is a place to store videos; these are primarily MP4 files created on my Android phone It would be nice if: I could view those videos from any PC in the house -- I'm guessing/hoping this is pretty trivial I could view those videos on my TV; I'm actually guessing that's pretty hard to answer because it probably depends on what apps are on my Vizio TV. However, if I can do #1, then I can hookup a laptop to the TV and view the videos that way I could view those videos from any Android device in the house I could view those videos from a Windows laptop outside of the house (i.e. not on the local network) I could view those videos from an Android device outside of the house I have an unused PC (motherboard, processor, RAM, power supply) which I'm sure will be powerful enough to at least get me started. The documentation indicates that a single HDD is all you need to get started, and I have an unused 4TB drive which I can donate to the cause. I know that unRaid is quite extensible, but I'm not clear how or if I could add additional drives later to start taking advantage of a parity drive. The "quality USB flash device" should be between 512MB and 32GB; is there any reason why I should prefer a larger drive, or is 512MB all I would ever need? E.g. if I go crazy installing apps, do these live on the flash drive or the hard drives? I know that I can get a 30 day trial license and start playing around and start learning some of these answers for myself, and I will do this as soon as I get a chance to go out and buy a suitable flash drive. However, if anybody could help me with some answers (or pointers to where I can find answers), it would be much appreciated.
