  1. Hy guys, I'm actually rocking Unraid on the following: Server A J4105 - 8Gb DDR4 500GB SSD (cache) 14TB parity - 14+8TB Array Have available the following: Server B Lenovo board + Ryzen pro 4650G + 16Gb DDR4 3200 256GB NVME / 14TB / 2x8TB 3x4TB I was planning to: Server A --> switching 8TB x 14TB to have 3x 14TB and move everything to the AMD Ryzen Pro platform to gain CPU power & Ram & expandability (1PCI-E 16X, 1 PCI-E 1X, 1 NVME, 1 NVME KEY-E) Sell 3x4TB Buy 1x8TB Server B(ackup) --> using J4105 & 8GB ram configuring a ZFS pool made by 4x8TB (24Tb ZFS1) to exploit the BIT ROT protection & snapshot make sense? I'd avoid to have the main server set-up as a ZFS for power efficiency (usually only 1HD + Parity spin-up when used), in the future I could add NVME storage for fast access to docker etc (I use NextCloud & Plex, mainly) what do you guys think? should I make something differently? thank you for any idea!
  2. NVME gets hot, very hot under hevy load. Did you try to cool them down / monitor their temperature?
  3. just to update, ad the end, I opted for the solution: check parity new config take out unwanted hdd re-write parity i wasn't that confident with the clear script, after reading it needed some changes to operate correctly on 7.0.x I already saved the script and willing to test as soon as i'll be able to build a second UnRaid server i'll use to test and to improve my CLI understanding of things, and to test out "dangerous" operation that I don't want to test on the production server
  4. Hi Frank! I'd like to shrink 'cause I'm using a sata multiplier based on micron chip wich made grew too much my idle consumption. Here in Italy electricity is high (0,35/0,40 /kWh) so I'd like to go back to a more efficient way of storage. the script to keep parity valid is under The "Clear Drive Then Remove Drive" Method procedure. Thanks for the parity check tip, I will do it.
  5. thanks for your reply! then you suggest to follow the clear remove - clear remove ? Do you know if I can clear 2 and remove in just one move? or I should follow the steps I described earlier?
  6. Hy Guys, i'm currently running the following configuration in my UnRaid server: 500GB SSD CACHE 14 Tb Parity 14 TB + 8 TB + 4 TB + 4 TB data (xfs, array) Actually 8TB is empty (not cleared), and the 2x4TB are full of Media (not a super-big-deal if I loose data on that). I'd like to know what's the fastest procedure to arrive to the following config: Parity SWAP 14 to 18TB 2 x 14 TB data I've one "big" constrain, only 6 sata port. If needed I can evaluate to move cache to array in the meanwhile to gain one more free sata port. My plan: - Step 1 BACKUP important data to external destination - Step 2 STOP ARRAY --> New Config with: - Actual parity As a drive - Actual 14TB data drive as a drive - New 18TB as parity Let parity rebuild Step 3 --> via unassigned device mount the 2x4TB and RSync to the now available and free 14TB drive (the 2 x4TB will retain data and will be readable?? I can't find this information, but I think so) Does exist any way to not loose parity apart from: -Step 1 --> clear script on 8TB --> remove without braking parity -Step 2 --> Parity swap procedure installing 18TB -Step 3 --> move data from 2x4TB to 14Tb mow available -Step 4 --> clear script on 1st 4 TB --> remove without braking parity -Step 5 --> clear script on 2nd 4 TB --> remove without braking parity my extimation of first is a... mmm 28h parity rebuild + 6 to 8 hrs of rsyncing (from outside the array I can turbo write FAST!) the second one is committed in never loose parity but will be something like mmm -Step 1 32hr (at around 70 Mb/s) <-- server unavailable -Step 2 28h parity rebuild -Step 3 16Hrs of rsync (array to array = slow) -Step 4 16Hr <-- server unavailable Step 5 16 Hr <-- server unavailable So it would be26Hrs Vs 100+hrs which in my opinion would put A LOT of stress on the HDD. Am I missing something? Actually all HDD health is great. thanks for your help
  7. Hi Guys, writing to ask some help troubleshooting my actual configuration and seeking advice on how to optimize what I already have. UnRaid: low power build based on J4105 8Gb Ram [actually this limit me to 6sata connected hd, I could add another 2 but I would be limited by PCI1x bandwith], just storage + some dockers 14Tb(Parity) + 14Tb + 8Tb + 4Tb + 4Tb EXt4 [tot 30Tb Free around 10Tb] + 500Gb cache BTRSF Cold storage for media/PMS Semi-working storage for lightroom pictures (meaning I use it to gain parity protection of my data, but it's quite slow...) Nextcloud in docker (as easily accessible cloud, and as destination target for an offsite Synology backup via WebDAV interface) PRO UnRaid (most important to me) If 1 hd dies, I've parity. If another dies, I can read data on the remaining, if no catastrophic loss of server, it's unlikely to lose ALL data at once Very optimized for low power consumption (everything is on cache and disks spindown easily) CONS low performance when writing to array, and important folders like picture skip cache bacause cache itself is not actually redundant Synology Ds415+ 18Tb BTRFS - no parity protection I use this to Rsync my file fron Unraid as a 2nd copy of my data I use HyperBackup over the www to backup offsite to another synology [previously tried to do directly from UnRaid via Duplicati but have had bad experice... Hyperbackup is so much easier] PRO so much more user friendly backup application both for local & remote backup better performance CONS not optimized for low power consumption Next Steps / Options: [Option 1] Unraid - keep as working machine 1° Create ZFS RaidZ1 with 3x8Tb for picture, to gain faster working speed at price of power consumption [I need to buy 8Tb, I've already one spare] 2° Keep 1 14Tb hdd not parity protected for MEDIA like movies and so on 3° Create a ZFS mirror for cache by adding a 2nd SSD thus gaining redundancy on cache (and using it also for picture) [1 need to buy a second SSD] Synology - keep as a local backup and use as starting point for remote backup 18Tb for backing Up Picture and personal doc 14Tb for backing Up Movies and so on PRO more performance? gain ZFS healing capacity for my personal files? CONS Convoluted workflow as now (rsync to synology and use synology for snapshots / offsite backup) worse powersaving performances [Option 2] Synology - keep as working machine Move all my personal filers to Synology and work from there [18Tb no parity] Backup Synology to Unraid, losing redundancy on the "working machine" [but having redundancy on the backup destination] Unraid - PMS and cold backup keep actual configuration and use it as a storage & plex media server PRO straightforward workflow (snapshot on working machine, backup software on woring machine ...) CONS need to keep Unraid for PMS, Unraid will be under-loaded working machine will lose redundancy Any suggestion and criticism will be very appreciated. I'm really in a rabbit hole and can't decide, time is a big constrain so I'd like to decide now and don't change workflow for many year to come
  8. Hi guys! I was in the process of emptying one disk to shrink the array, by using disk to disk transfer using krusader. everything went smoothly for several TB of data until yesterday evening. At some point the gui of krusader and unraid become unreachable (err conn timeout). I’ve doubt I’ve messed up something when moving the app data folder. is there something I can try to do before unplugging un raid from the wall with the related unclean shutdown? thanks for your help! pS update: I’m not a Mac guy but lately that’s what I use. I tried to shh by terminal session with no luck, (ssh root@server ip doesn’t do anything). Always from Mac terminal trying to ping the server IP seems giving back signal. At this point I’m not sure I’m sshing right. I was able to ssh using putty in win pc but I never ssh’d on Mac di not sure if unraid not reachable by ssh or if I’m doing something wrong. SOLVED I waited few hours and when the "Backup/Restore Appdata" kicked in, it shut off Dockers and that did the trick. I suppose that the copy of thousands little files had broke the GUI. I'm moving fewer file a time now and that seems working fine now
  9. Hi guys, first of all thanks for your amazing job DLandon. I've a problem trying to preclear a bunch of disk. I used the plugin for the first disk and everything went as planned. now I tried already 2 more disk but the preclear is stuck at "starting" also after several hours. I tried to stop, reboot, format / clear the partition but nothing, I can't find a way to make it works. any idea?
  10. thanks, quite sure for error. didn't think about checking the smart. you're right. no reallocated sector so I should be good to GO
  11. Hi, I just finished 2 cycle pre-clear of an unassigned disk. at the beginning I had the icon to open the log and check status, but then disappeared. How can I retrive the information? in particular about reallocated sector count! thanks for any help!
  12. please check MariaDb docker thread, I had your same issue as other people, you need to delete one log file in mariadb appdata folder to solve the issue!
  13. Super thank you for this! solved my same problem too ❤️
  14. Hi guys can I ask you how can I backup my mariadb? I'm using it for nextcloud and I'd like planned backup... just in case
  15. thank you so much, I will try this evening and report back!
  16. Can someone point me in the right direction to make function the NUT plugin? i've already the NUT plugin working in Unraid but i would greatly appreciate to monitor my ups also in netdata. but I can't figure how to do it :'(
