  1. I have my server in the basement and it would be nice to be able to turn the server on and off remotely. I tried to configure wake on lan in the bios and send wake on lan magic packet command with no luck. Has anyone tried this and gotton it to work?
  2. I now have this board running with 6 drives of various sizes. I have not had any problems. I have 4 sata drives. 2 are on the MOBO and 2 on a promise controller. I have 2 PATA drives on the MOBO. My Sata drives are all Sata 150 drives. The system has been remarkably stable so far (about 1.5 weeks).
  3. You guys are probably right. I think I will go the cheap route alslo with the 4:3 trays. Does anyone know where you can get a bay cover. If I use three of the 4:3 trays I am one faceplate short. What did you guys do?
  4. A little follow up on the Asus P5PE-VM MOBO. 1. No problem booting from usb. There is no discreet "boot from USB" in the bios. You have to insert your flash prior to booting and then select the flash drive under the boot menu. I have two flash drives and strangely one showed up in the boot menu under removable drives and the other under hard disk drives. Look under both. They were both inserted into the same USB slot and both worked. 2. I am now running unraid basic with two SATA and one IDE drive. They are all plugged into the MOBO. In the main menu of the bios under IDE configuration, I am running in enhanced mode with SATA selected. I had a little trouble initially getting unraid to use my two SATA drives. This was solved easily with the help of Tom (thank you). Basically, I had to enter the linux reference to the sata disks in the unraid browser window ie. parity device- /dev/scsi/sdh1-1c0i0l0. Tom said this would be easier to do in the next beta release. One of my SATA drives is my biggest drive so I am using it for parity. 3. I am using version 0604 of the bios build date 07/10/06. There is a Sept 06 version of the bios available but I think you need a floppy drive to flash to this. With all of the old computer stuff I have lying around I couldn't believe that I couldn't find a floppy drive. I tried to flash this new bios using the usb flash but no luck. Fortunately, I didn't mess anything up trying. 4. I have done some reads and writes. I use XBMC and tried watching some movies. I have not added any new disks. 5. Anyway, I think I am going to really like this setup and will throw some more money at this project. Time to upgrade to the pro version and order another power supply. I am currently using the coolermaster 4:3 drive cage for disks. This works well but it is kind of a pain to move disks and I see some benefit of drive trays. I am interested to see what trays people are using for SATA drives. As far as I can tell, SATA trays are currently a little pricey so may just wait.
  5. I have been following unraid for months. With the SATA upgrade and dwindling disk space it was time to get my feet wet. I just installed the P5PE-VM tonight. You can definately boot from USB. Trying to get things set up now (Mixed SATA and IDE). Give me a day or two and I will have more.
  6. I am thinking of setting up an unraid system with ASUS P5PE-VM mobo. I want to go with 2 ide drives and 10 sata drives (eventually) using 2 PROMISE SATA300 TX4 PCI SATA Controller Cards. Will this work? I assume that the sata ports on the MOBO will be parity and disk 1 and that the two IDE disks will be disks 2 and 3. Will the promise sata card drives be recognized as disks 4-11? Thanks. I love the idea of unraid and hope this works.
  7. With the impending implementation of greater SATA support, is there a chance that the starter kit will be offered with one IDE and one SATA card. I have the usual mixture of drives lying around. I am on the verge of getting a server system but would like to use the drives that I have. I could put together a system like this but if such a starter kit was offered it would save me some time. Also, I'm interested in other motherboards that work with unraid. I know that this has been done once but it would be helpful if anyone using a different MB would reply and tell how much of a pain it was to get the system up and running.
