Understanding Disk Exclusions

Hello,

 

My Disk 1 is nearly full and it has files for my business on a share that is spread between this and 3 other disks.  If I set the Business share to exclude Disk 1, will that cause issues with files that I modify the may be saved on Disk 1 within the share?  Thanks!

Include / Exclude settings do not affect files that currently exist.  Those settings only affect new files being written.  (oh and also Split level settings override include / exclude for new files)

Thanks, Squid.  So if the drive is almost full and I am editing large, existing video files that are stored on Disk 1, should I be concerned?

If you are expanding existing files, then you could run out of space.

 

All existing files will be read and modified in place, only new files will be evaluated for placement on other disks, based on share settings.

Thanks, Jonathan.  Yes, those existing files would be expanding from the modifications I make.

 

Warranted or not, having disks that are 90+% full has always been unsettling to me.  It sounds like I should move files from one disk to another.

In your use case, setting a free space 3 to 4 or more times the size of your largest file would probably be wise, along with making sure the split level didn't restrict placement.

 

Moving your currently growing files from /mnt/disk1/share to /mnt/disk2/share may be a good idea.
