Eth0 Randomly Dropping

Recommended Posts

I've been having this issue for a while now where the one NIC I am using will drop and the server become unresponsive. The only thing I can see in the log is the following. Anyone else have this issue?

Sadly your log does not show WHAT KIND/BRAND of Nic gives you trouble.

If it is a 10Gbe UTP type, it is very likely that your cabeling is not good enough to keep up high speed over a longer period. Try to slow it down (try 5G or even 2,5G) or change the cables (wallets too!) to at least CAT.6, better CAT.7 type. Also, if your cable is longer than about 30m, it is essential that high quality cables are used!

(and do not patch them too much, although the cables are are already CAT.7, there are no plugs higher than CAT.6 on the market right now. So every patch is a loss and they add up quite fast limiting the maximum distance still further)

But, as said, unless you tell us what brand your nic is, we can only give you very basic advices.

Oh, sorry, I see in the first line: "igb". my fault... (too early, need more coffee :-))) )

So it is an Intel Gigabit card based on an 82576 chip...

Although the above points are still valid with 1Gbe Nics, its far more unlikely that it will strike you unless you are using very very old cables (below CAT.5e).

But a quick check shows that these cards are so outdated already, that there is a serious driver issue. You better throw it out and use a 10€ Realtek instead.

Thanks for the reply. This NIC is an onboard NIC on the Gigabyte C246-WU4-CF motherboard. It also has the latest BIOS firmware installed. I am, also, using a CAT6 ethernet cable. Although the reel I have of the CAT6 was from Monoprice, so made in China more than likely.

I stand corrected, they just released a new BIOS update right after I updated mine a few months back. I'll give that a try as well.
