flausch
Hey, I am a bit worried about my HDD usage (read/writes). This is what the reads/writes look within 2 days of uptime. Is that normal? Usage is PLEX and Time Machine Backup. Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Number of read/writes is basically meaningless, it can vary wildly for devices, sometimes even for the same devices. Quote Link to comment
flausch
I moved all the docker containers (PLEX etc.) on their own SSD and read/writes did not really go down. Are 30 million writes in 8 days too much? My concern is that PLEX and Time Machine wear the HDDs without any good purpose (they were quite expensive for me :D). Would really appreciate some feedback ❤️ Edited May 14, 2022 by flausch Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Like already mentioned the number of writes in the GUI is meaningless, if you want to see how much it's reading/writing you can check SMART, note the current read/writes total, then check again after 24H and make the calculations. https://www.virten.net/2016/12/ssd-total-bytes-written-calculator/ Quote Link to comment

Kilrah
That's a long period... but looks like about 111GB/day. I'd say it's a lot, but then if you use time machine and work on big files all the time it might not be surprising.... would need to know more about your usage. Quote Link to comment

Currently there is only PLEX and TimeMachine accessing the NAS. I am just worried that TimeMachine or PLEX causes more wear than necessary. Might it be a good idea to buy a smaller drive to run TimeMachine on it? Currently I have 2x 12TB drives.
