SavageAUS
As the title states is my HDD dead? Unraid is reporting 10,813 errors on this one drive (seems excessive) and the disk is now disabled. Is the drive dead or perhaps a faulty cable? I am using a HBA with mini sas to 4 sata if that helps at all. blackbox-smart-20231129-1435.zip Quote Link to comment
Solution itimpi Posted November 29, 2023 Solution Share Posted November 29, 2023 According to the SMART report the drive failed the extended SMART test which indicates it should be replaced. Quote Link to comment

That’s what I thought but wanted to be sure. I’ve ordered 2 4tb iron wolf drives. One to replace the failed disk and another to increase parity (currently 3tb). Should I increase parity before replacing the drive? 3tb to 4tb or replace the failed drive first which is a 3tb replacing with a 4tb. Quote Link to comment
itimpi
You cannot ever have a data drive that is larger than the smallest parity drive! If you have only 1 parity drive then you cannot upgrade parity while you have a failed data drive. For you special case I would suggest you start by using the parity swap procedure to upgrade parity to 4TB and as part of the same operation replace the failed drive with the 3TB drive from parity. When that completes you can either add the other new drive as an additional drive in the array or follow the standard procedure for upgrading the size of a data drive that is covered in the online documentation accessible via the Manual link at the bottom of the Unraid GUI. SavageAUS
Ok so if I am reading it correctly I’ll end up doing 2 rebuilds? Stop the array. Unassign the dead drive. Start the array to forget drive. Stop the array. Assign parity drive to dead drive spot. Install new larger drive and assign to parity. Start array. Copy old parity to new parity. Wait for copy. Rebuild replaced disk. Wait. Win. Optional. Stop array. Replace any other drive with second new larger drive or add second parity. Rebuild. Wait. Win. My steps are very simplified but I believe the order is correct which is what is important. Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
Once this is all done I’m gutting my system to install a new motherboard and CPU. Ryzen 7 2700x and MSI board. 4 core 8 thread upgraded to 8 core 16 thread. I don’t think it be wise to replace motherboard and cpu and do the parity swap all at the same time. But surely the extra cores/threads would help the process? Quote Link to comment

SavageAUS
Just to update this thread. new drives arrived today and parity swap procedure has begun. Guess no Plex for me tonight. Once this is done it will need to rebuild the replaced disk (old parity) then I plan to either replace another 2TB with a 4TB or add the extra 4TB as a second parity and shrink the array to 6 disks. Thoughts? 7 disks 1 parity or 6 + 2? Quote Link to comment
itimpi
2 hours ago, SavageAUS said: Thoughts? 7 disks 1 parity or 6 + 2? If you have decent backups I would think that single parity is enough. I personally only tend to go for dual parity when the number or array disks gets to be something like 10-12 (but I have decent backups in place). However it is basically your decision to make. It is always worth remembering that backups are still important as although parity can protect against a disk failure it does not protect against other ways to lose data such as File System corruption (perhaps caused by bad hardware), user error, etc. Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
Update. parity swap went well, now unraid is rebuilding the array disk. Then I think it’ll be time for the hardware swap to ryzen 7 2700x. Do you know if Ryzen still has issues with C states? I’m on unraid 6.12.5. Quote Link to comment

SavageAUS
So even though the parity swap went smooth I am having an issue now. The new HDD has been disabled twice. First time i just did a rebuild but now this second time has me worried. I have a short smart test - no issues. Tried to run 2 long test and it says Interrupted (host reset). I have upgraded my hardware to a Ryzen 7 2700x and MSI MAG X570S TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI and replaced the mini sas to sata cable. blackbox-smart-20231208-1338.zip Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
I have now even tried with the array stopped but still get the same error. Did I get a bad drive? Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Please post the diagnostics. Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
I’m running the drive through another pre clear at present to cover all bases. Once pre clear is done I’ll add it back to the array and rebuild parity. If any further errors occur I’ll be sure to post diags. Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
Post read at 63% so I’m assuming it’s all going well. Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
So the pre clear all went fine. Parity rebuild all went fine. Couple of hours later parity is disabled again. Driving me crazy. I am retesting another parity sync with the same drive connected to the motherboard this time to see if it’s the mini sas to SATA cable. blackbox-diagnostics-20231210-1014.zip blackbox-smart-20231210-1029.zip Edited December 10, 2023 by SavageAUS Added short smart test Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
It's not logged as a disk problem and SMART looks OK, so most likely power/connection issue. Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
I think my new mini sas to sata cable is a dud on lane 1. Parity drive is connected to motherboard with 0 issues so far. Quote Link to comment
SavageAUS
Now due to weather or possibly caught the c state bug my server is offline. Seller has refunded me for the mini sas to sata cable after pointing them to this thread. Now to order a new one and wait till I get home to see what’s going on with my server. My router is online and so is my camera so I know it’s not power related. Quote Link to comment

SavageAUS
It’s a thermaltake smart power 550. So maybe not the best quality. And I am occasionally hearing what sounds like a hard drive power disconnect / reconnect. You know the sound a hard drive makes when you unplug it while powered on, that screech sound.
