Disk Disappeared from Array

My first disk in the array (less than a year old) has suddenly dropped out. Server is off(line) while I look at disk and decide if I need a new one. I swapped cables, SATA ports etc and it didnt reappear. Just shows as Red X and reported 300+ errors during parity check.

So popped HDD into a 2nd PC running Kubuntu, powered on and it is seen, mounted it and looked at SMART report (attached). Disk is showing as Empty!?

Is this disk toast? No reallocated sectors... so wondering why it is empty?

Appreciate some help, suggestions etc

SMART looks fine.

Thanks. I thought so... so do I just assume unRAID had a brain-freeze and put drive back in the rebuild it from parity and other drives?  I'm a bit freaked out that the drive is empty.. why would that happen?! And why would it not just happen again?

What is the emulated drive in Unraid showing?   Whatever appears there is what would appear if you rebuilt the drive.

when you say the drive is ‘empty’ is that looking at in Unraid array or somewhere else?

You are likely to get better informed feedback if you attach your system’s diagnostics zip file to your next post in this thread. It is always a good idea when asking questions to supply your diagnostics so we can see details of your system, how you have things configured, and the current syslog.

I havent even checked what emulated drive shows (but I assume it will be all my files - I trust unRAID). The drive itself, attached in RO to Kubuntu and mounted shows empty

I'll put it back in unRAID and look again and add diagnostics

I did get the expected red X but unfortunately now I seem to be getting that old unRAID problem where the webUI goes rogue and doesnt display all elements so I cannot see my drives and requesting diagnostics has been stuck at "Downloading... /boot/logs/uberserver-diagnostics-20240405-1741.zip" for 15minutes now

At times I really HATE unRAID. Thankfully not all the time!

Logs are being spammed with ATA messages from a couple of disks, makes it difficult to see anything else, they are not errors, but also not normal, maybe a controller issue.

Disk dropped, so the SMART report is empty.

I have onboard Intel SATA and a (yes, you guessed) Chinese controller PCIEx4 ASM1166 with 6 SATA ports on. I'd guess its either that faulty or some BIOS setting thats allowing that to drop out? Or a driver issue?

How do I get the disk to "undrop" then? Sorry, dont like feeling I need to be spoonfed but I think i need it

I have powertune --autotune set to run which puts all things in lowest power settings... do I need a new PSU then? I find the "loose" connection unlikely.. its not like the machine moves...     These sorta issues are the worst... Be much easier if it was an easy "replace X"...    I do have an LSI SAS2308 card but didnt want to use it cos it will idle at 5-10W more than the ASM1166.     Ideally want a S1151 board with 12 SATA ports.. heck ANY Intel 8th or newer with 12 SATA ports

That has been known to cause issues with some controllers, try running with that disabled for some time.

OK will do... (how do I get the parity disk back though?)   but ideally want to use some power saving if at all possible. My server sits idle most of the time. If I could work out a way to have my dockers only load and active on a schedule I could have the machine truly idle...

Thanks Jorge :-)  I should know this having tinkered with unRAID for some years... I leave, use something else and keep coming back.  My rebuild time started super slow but now speeds up to only 1 day 14 hours. That's wiped out any attempts at power saving.

I know its a different topic but I really cannot find reliable info on how to optimize a server for power saving with unRAID.
